śrī-bahulāśva uvāca triśu lokeśu vikhyātā dhanyā vai dvārakā-purī paripūrṇatamaḥ sākśāc chrī-kṛśṇo yatra vāsa-kṛt śrī-bahulāśva uvāca—Śrī Bahulāśva said; triśu—in the three; lokeśu—worlds; vikhyatā—famous; dhanyā—glorious; vai—indeed; dvārakā-purī—the city of Dvārakā; paripūrṇatamaḥ—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; sākśāc—directly; śrī-kṛśṇaḥ—Śrī Kṛśṇa; yatra—where; vāsa-kṛt—resides. Śrī Bahulāśva said: Glorious Dvārakā City is famous in the three worlds. Śrī Kṛśṇa, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, resides there.

śrī-kṛśṇasyāṇga-sambhūtā purī dvāravatī śrutā kasmād ihāgatā brahman kasmin kāle vada prabho

Synonyms

śrī-kṛśṇasya of Lord Kṛśṇa ; aṇga from the body ; sambhūtā born ; purī the city ; dvāravatī Dvārakā ; śrutā heard ; kasmāt how? ; iha here ; āgatā come ; brahman O brāhmaṇa ; kasmin in what? ; kāle time ; vada please tell ; prabhaḥ O master.

Translation

I have heard that Dvārakā City was manifested from Lord Kṛśṇa's transcendental body. How and when did it come to this earth? O master, please tell.

śrī-nārada uvāca sādhu sādhu tvayā pṛśṭaṁ dvārakāgama-kāraṇam yac chrutvā śuddhatāṁ yāti loka-ghāty api pātakī śrī-nārada uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; sādhu—well done; sādhu—well don; tvayā—by you; pṛśṭam—asked; dvārakā—of Dvārakā; āgama—arrival; kāraṇam—the reason; yat—which; śhrutvā—hearing; śuddhatām—purity; yāti—attains; loka-ghāty—a murderer; api—even; pātakī—a sinner. Śrī Nārada said: Excellent. You have asked an excellent question. By hearing the reason for Dvārakā's arrival on this earth, even a great sinner, or even a murderer becomes pure at heart.

śaryātir nāma rājābhūc cakravartī manoḥ sutaḥ cakāra rājyaṁ dharmeṇa varśānām ayutaṁ bhuvi

Translation

There was a king named Śaryāti who for ten thousand years ruled the earth according to religious principles.

uttānabarhir ānarto bhūriśeṇa iti trayaḥ śaryāter abhavan putrāḥ sarva-dharma-bhṛtāṁ varāḥ

Synonyms

uttānabarhiḥ Uttanabarhi ; ānartaḥ Anarta ; bhūriśeṇa Bhurisena ; iti thus ; trayaḥ three ; śaryāteḥ of Saryati ; abhavan were ; putrāḥ sons ; sarva-dharma-bhṛtām of the followers of religion ; varāḥ the best.

Translation

Śaryāti had three very pious sons sons: Uttānabarhi, Anarta, and Bhūriśeṇa.

uttānabarhiśe purvāṁ bhūriśeṇāya dakśiṇām paścimāṁ ca diśaṁ sarvāṁ ānartāya dadau nṛpaḥ

Synonyms

uttānabarhiśe to Uttanabarhi ; purvām the east ; bhūriśeṇāya to Bhurisena ; dakśiṇām the south ; paścimām the west ; ca and ; diśam direction ; sarvām all ; ānartāya to Anarta ; dadau gave ; nṛpaḥ the king.

Translation

To Uttānabarhi King Śaryāti gave the eastern part of his kingdom, to Bhūriśeṇa he gave the southern part, and to Anarta he gave the western part.

mameyaṁ hi mahī kṛtsnā mayā dharmeṇa pālitā balārjitā baliśṭhena yūyaṁ taṁ pālayiśyatha

Synonyms

mama of me ; iyam this ; hi indeed ; mahī earth ; kṛtsnā entire ; mayā by me ; dharmeṇa according to religious principles ; pālitā protected ; bala by my strength ; arjitā earned ; baliśṭhena most powerful ; yūyam you ; tam this ; pālayiśyatha will protect.

Translation

King Śaryāti said to them: This entire earth is mine. I rule and protect it according to religious principles. I am most powerful. I have conquered this earth by my own power. In the future you three will also rule and protect this earth.

pitur vacaḥ samākarṇya ānarto madhyamaḥ sutaḥ jṣānī jṣānamayaṁ vākyaṁ uvāca prahasann iva

Synonyms

pituḥ of the father ; vacaḥ the words ; samākarṇya hearing ; ānartaḥ Anarta ; madhyamaḥ the middle ; sutaḥ son ; jṣānī wise ; jṣānamayam wise ; vākyam words ; uvāca spoke ; prahasann laughing ; iva as if.

Translation

Hearing his father's words, the middle son, Anarta, who was very wise, laughed and spoke words of great wisdom.

śrī-ānarta uvāca taveyaṁ na mahī kṛtsnā na tvayā pālitā kvacit na tvad-balārjitā rājan baliśṭho bhagavān vibhuḥ śrī-ānarta uvāca—Śrī Anarta said; tava—of you; iyam—this; na—not; mahī—earth; kṛtsnā—entire; na—not; tvayā—by you; pālitā—protected; kvacit—in any way; na—not; tvad-balārjitā—won by your strength; rājan—O king; baliśṭhaḥ—most powerful; bhagavān—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; vibhuḥ—all-powerful. Śrī Anarta said: You do not own this earth. Nor do you rule and protect it. Nor did you conquer it with your own power. Only the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the all-powerful ruler of this earth.

mahī śrī-kṛśṇadevasya tenaiva paripālitā tat-tejasā jitā kṛtsnā baliśṭho na hareḥ samaḥ

Synonyms

mahī the earth ; śrī-kṛśṇadevasya of Lord Kṛśṇa ; tena by Him ; eva indeed ; paripālitā protected ; tat-tejasā by His power ; jitā conquered ; kṛtsnā entire ; baliśṭhaḥ most powerful ; na not ; hareḥ to Lord Kṛśṇa ; samaḥ equal.

Translation

The earth is Lord Kṛśṇa's property. He rules and protects it. He conquered it with His great power. No one is powerful like Lord Kṛśṇa.

Verse text

sa eva viśvaṁ sva-kṛtaṁ sṛjaty atti ca pāti ca sa eva brahma paramaṁ kālaḥ kalayatāṁ prabhuḥ

Synonyms

sa He ; eva indeed ; viśvam the universe ; sva-kṛtam made by Him ; sṛjaty creates ; atti destroys ; ca and ; pāti maintains ; ca and ; sa He ; eva indeed ; brahma Brahman ; paramam Supreme ; kālaḥ time ; kalayatām of controllers ; prabhuḥ the master.

Translation

He creates, maintains, and destroys this universe. He is the Supreme Brahman. He is time, the master of all that subdue.

yo 'ntaḥ praviśya bhūtāni bhūtair apy akhilāśrayaḥ sa viśvākhyo 'dhiyajṣo 'sau paripūrṇatamaḥ svayam

Translation

He has entered within all living entities and all elements. He is the shelter and resting place of all living entities and all elements. He is the entire universe. He is the object of all sacrifices. He is the most perfect Supreme Personality of Godhead.

yad-bhayād vati vāto 'yaṁ sūryas tapati yad-bhayāt yad-bhayād varśate devo mṛtyuś carati yad-bhayāt

Synonyms

yad-bhayāt out of fear of whom ; vati blows ; vātaḥ the wind ; ayam he ; sūryaḥ the sun ; tapati shines ; yad-bhayāt out of fear of whom ; yad-bhayāt out of fear of him ; varśate rains ; devaḥ Indra ; mṛtyuḥ death ; carati moves ; yad-bhayāt out of fear of whom.

Translation

Out of fear of Him the wind blows. Out of fear of Him the sun shines. Out of fear of Him Indra gives rain. Out of fear of Him death moves on the earth.

paripūrṇatamaṁ sākśāc chrī-kṛśṇaṁ parameśvaram bhaja sarvātmanā rājann ahaṇkāra-vivarjitaḥ

paripūrṇatamam the Supreme Personality of Godhead ; sākśāt Himself ; śrī-kṛśṇam Śrī Kṛśṇa ; parameśvaram the Supreme controller ; bhaja please worship ; sarvātmanā with all your heart ; rājann O king ; ahaṇkāra-vivarjitaḥ free from false ego.

Translation

O king, please become free from pride and false ego and with all your heart worship Śrī Kṛśṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

śrī-nārada uvāca jṣānaṁ prāpto 'pi śaryātir ākśiptaḥ putra-vāk-śaraiḥ ānartaṁ sva-sutaṁ prāha ruśā prasphuritādharaḥ śrī-nārada uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; jṣānam—knowledge; prāptaḥ—attained; api—although; śaryātiḥ—Saryati; ākśiptaḥ—wounded; putra-vāk-śaraiḥ—by the arrows of his son's words; ānartam—to Anarta; sva-sutam—his own son; prāha—said; ruśā—angrily; prasphurita—trembling; adharaḥ—his lips. Wounded by the arrows of his son's words, and his lips trembling in anger even though what he was confronted with was the truth, Śaryāti spoke to his son Anarta.

śaryātir uvāca dūraṁ gaccha asad-buddhe guruvad bhāśase katham yāvad bhūtaṁ tu me rājyaṁ tāvat tvaṁ me mahīṁ vasa śaryātiḥ uvāca—Saryati said; dūram—far away; gaccha—go; asad-buddhe—O fool; guruvat—like a guru; bhāśase—you speak; katham—why?; yāvat—as; bhūtam—manifested; tu—indeed; me—of me; rājyam—the kingdom; tāvat—that; tvam—you; me—not; mahīm—earth; vasa—should reside. Śaryāti said: Fool, get out! Why do you talk as if you were my teacher? You may not live any place in my kingdom.

yas tvayārādhitaḥ kṛśṇaḥ so 'pi sarva-sahāya-kṛt na navīnāṁ kiṁ mahīṁ te bhagavān eva dāsyati

Synonyms

yaḥ who ; tvayā by you ; ārādhitaḥ worshiped ; kṛśṇaḥ Kṛśṇa ; saḥ He ; api even ; sarva-sahāya-kṛt giving you all assistance ; na not ; navīnām new ; kim whether ; mahīm earth ; te to you ; bhagavān the Lord ; eva indeed ; dāsyati will give.

Translation

Take help from this Kṛśṇa you worship. Will He not give you some new land not now a part of the earth?

śrī-nārada uvāca ity uktas tu tadānārto rājānaṁ prāha mānadaḥ yatra te ca mahī-rājyaṁ tatra vāso na me bhavet śrī-nārada uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; ity—thus; uktaḥ—spoken; tu—undeed; tadā—then; ānartaḥ—Anarta; rājānam—to the king; prāha—said; mānadaḥ—respectful; yatra—where; te—of you; ca—and; mahī-rājyam—the kingdom of the earth; tatra—there; vāsaḥ—residence; na—not; me—of me; bhavet—will be. Śrī Nārada said: Addressed in this way, respectful Anarta said to the king, “I will not live anywhere in your kingdom, which extends to all the countries of the earth."

pitrā niḥsārito rājṣāpy ānarto 'bdhi-taṭaṁ gataḥ velām etya tapas tepe varśānām ayutaṁ jale

Synonyms

pitrā by teh father ; niḥsāritaḥ expelled ; rājṣā by the king ; api also ; ānartaḥ Anarta ; abdhi of the ocean ; taṭam to the shore ; gataḥ went ; velām on the coast ; etya going ; tapaḥ austerities ; tepe performed ; varśānām of years ; ayutam ten thousand ; jale in the water.

Translation

Banished by his father, Anarta went to the seacoast and entered the ocean, where he performed austerities for ten thousand years.

prema-lakśaṇayā bhaktyā santuśṭo bhagavān hariḥ tasmai svaṁ darśanaṁ dattvā varaṁ brūhīty uvāca ha

Synonyms

prema-lakśaṇayā characterized by love ; bhaktyā with devotion ; santuśṭaḥ pleased ; bhagavān the Lord ; hariḥ Kṛśṇa ; tasmai to him ; svam His own ; darśanam sight ; dattvā giving ; varam boon ; brūhi speak ; iti thus ; uvāca said ; ha indeed.

Translation

Pleased by his loving devotion, Lord Kṛśṇa appeared before him and said, “Ask for a boon."

Verse text

kṛtāṣjali-puṭo bhūtvā- narta utthāya śīghrataḥ nanāma kṛśṇa-pādābjaṁ romāṣcī prema-vihvalaḥ

Synonyms

kṛtāṣjali-puṭaḥ with folded hands ; bhūtvā becoming ; anarta Anarta ; utthāya rising ; śīghrataḥ at once ; nanāma bowed ; kṛśṇa-pādābjam to Lord Kṛśṇa's lotus feet ; romāṣcī his hairs erect ; prema-vihvalaḥ overcome with love.

Translation

Overcome with love, and the hairs of his body erect with joy, Anarta quickly stood up and with folded hands bowed before Lord Kṛśṇa's lotus feet.

śrī-ānarta uvāca namas te vāsudevāya namaḥ saṇkarśaṇāya ca pradyumnāyāniruddhāya sātvatāṁ pataye namaḥ śrī-ānarta uvāca—Śrī Anarta said; namaḥ—obeisances; te—to You; vāsudevāya—Lord Vāsudeva; namaḥ—obeisances; saṇkarśaṇāya—to Lord ;Saṇkarśaṇ ca—and; pradyumnāya—to Lord Pradyumna; aniruddhāya—to Lord Aniruddha; sātvatām—of the devotees; pataye—to the master; namaḥ—obeisances. Śrī Anarta said; I offer my respectful obeisances to You, who are Lord Vāsudeva. I offer my respectful obeisances to You, who are Lord Saṇkarśaṇa, Lord Pradyumna, and Lord Aniruddha. I offer my respectful obeisances to You, who are the master of the devotees.

Verse text

pitrā niśkāsito deva tvām ahaṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ dehi mahyaṁ bhūmim anyāṁ yatra vāso hi me bhavet

Synonyms

pitrā by my father ; niśkāsitaḥ banished ; deva O Lord ; tvām to You ; aham I ; śaraṇam take shelter ; gataḥ gone ; dehi please give ; mahyam to me ; bhūmim a place ; anyām another ; yatra where ; vāsaḥ residence ; hi indeed ; me of me ; bhavet may be.

Translation

I, who was banished by my father, now take shelter of You. O Lord, please give me a country where I may reside, a country outside my father's kingdom of the earth.

Verse text

dhruvo 'pi yat-prasādena yayau sarvottamaṁ padam tasmai namo bhagavate praṇata-kleśa-hāriṇe

Synonyms

dhruvaḥ Dhruva ; api also ; yat-prasādena by whose mercy ; yayau attained ; sarvottamam the best of all ; padam abode ; tasmai to Him ; namaḥ obeisances ; bhagavate to the Supreme Lord ; praṇata of the surrendered souls ; kleśa sthe sufferings ; hāriṇe the remover.

Translation

I offer my respectful obeisances to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who removes the sufferings of the surrendered souls and who mercifully gave to Dhruva Mahārāja the best of all abodes.

śrī-nārada uvāca ānartam ānataṁ dīnaṁ bhagavān dīna-vatsalaḥ prasannaḥ śrī-mukhenāha megha-gambhīrayā girā śrī-nārada uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; ānartam—to Anarta; ānatam—bowing down; dīnam—poor; bhagavān—the Lord; dīna-vatsalaḥ—kind to the downtrodden; prasannaḥ—please; śrī-mukhena—with His glorious mouth; āha—spoke; megha-gambhīrayā—deep as thunder; girā—with words. Śrī Nārada said: Then the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is kind to the downtrodden and who was pleased at heart, with His glorious mouth spoke words deep like thunder to poor Anarta, who was bowing down before Him.

śrī-bhagavān uvāca anyā na medinī loke kiṁ kartavyaṁ mayā nṛpa sva-vacas tad ṛtaṁ kartuṁ tvad-bhaktyā paritośitaḥ śrī-bhagavān uvāca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; anyā—another; na—not; medinī—earth; loke—in the world; kim—what?; kartavyam—should be done; mayā—by Me; nṛpa—O king; sva-vacaḥ—own words; tat—that; ṛtam—truthful; kartum—to make; tvad-bhaktyā—by your devotion; paritośitaḥ—satisfied. The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: I am pleased by Your devotion, but I I do not have another earth in this universe to give you. O king, what should I do to grant the boon you ask?

tasmād vai svasya lokasya vaikuṇṭhasya parantapa bhū-khaṇḍaṁ yojana-śataṁ dadāmi vimalaṁ śubham

Synonyms

tasmāt therefore ; vai indeed ; svasya own ; lokasya planet ; vaikuṇṭhasya Vaikuṇṭha ; parantapa O mighty one ; bhū-khaṇḍam on the earth ; yojana-śatam eight hundred miles ; dadāmi I give ; vimalam pure ; śubham glorious.

Translation

Therefore, O mighty one, I will place on this earth an eight-hundred mile portion of my pure and glorious Vaikuṇṭha world.

śrī-nārada uvāca ity uktvānārta-nṛpatiṁ bhagavān bhakta-vatsalaḥ vaikuṇṭhāc ca samutpatya bhū-khaṇḍaṁ śata-yojanam cakraṁ sudarśanaṁ dhṛtvā samudre bhīma-nādini dadhāra bhagavān devas tasyopari videha-rāṭ śrī-nārada uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; ity—thus; uktvānārta-nṛpatim—speaking; bhagavān—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; bhakta—to the devotees; vatsalaḥ—affectionate; vaikuṇṭhāt—from Vaikuṇṭha; ca—and; samutpatya—picking up; bhū-khaṇḍam—place; śata-yojanam—eight hundred miles; cakram—cakra; sudarśanam—Sudarśana; dhṛtvā—taking; samudre—in the ocean; bhīma-nādini—filled with terrible sounds; dadhāra—held; bhagavān—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; devaḥ—the Lord; tasya—it; upari—above; videha-rāṭ—O king of Videha. Śrī Nārada said: O king of Videha, after speaking these words, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who loves His devotees, took His Sudarśana-cakra, lifted up an eight-hundred mile portion of Vaikuṇṭha, and placed it in the ocean filled with fearful sounds.

ānarto lakśa-varśāntaṁ tatra rājyaṁ cakāra ha putra-pautra-samāyukto rājan vaikuṇṭha-sampadam

ānartaḥ Anarta ; lakśa-varśāntam after ten thousand years ; tatra there ; rājyam kingdom ; cakāra did ; ha indeed ; putra sons ; pautra and grandsons ; samāyuktaḥ endowed ; rājan O king ; vaikuṇṭha-sampadam the opulence of Vaikuṇṭha.

Translation

O king, in this way, after ten thousand years Anarta attained a kingdom with all the opulences of Vaikuṇṭha and a dynasty with many noble sons and grandsons.

idaṁ śrutvātha śaryātiḥ pitā vai vismito 'bhavat ānarto nāma deśo 'bhūd ānartasya prasādataḥ

Synonyms

idam this ; śrutvā hearing ; atha then ; śaryātiḥ Saryati ; pitā the father ; vai indeed ; vismitaḥ astonished ; abhavat became ; ānartaḥ Anarta ; nāma named ; deśaḥ the country ; abhūt became ; ānartasya of Anarta ; prasādataḥ by the mercy.

Translation

By the Lord's mercy that country was named Anarta after him. When he heard all this, Anarta's father, Śaryāti, became astonished.

revatas tasya putro 'bhūc chrī-śailasya gireḥ sutam samutpatya sva-hastābhyāṁ ānarteśu nyapātayat

Synonyms

revataḥ Revata ; tasya of him ; putraḥ the son ; abhūt was ; śrī-śailasya gireḥ of Mount Śaila ; sutam the son ; samutpatya lifting ; sva-hastābhyām with his own hands ; ānarteśu in the country of Anarta ; nyapātayat placed.

Translation

Anarta's son was named Revata. Revata lifted the mountain that was Mount Śaila's son and placed it in the country of Anarta.

so 'bhūd revata-nāmnāpi raivato nāma parvataḥ kuśasthalīṁ vinirmāya rājyaṁ kṛtvātha revataḥ

Synonyms

saḥ it ; abhūt became ; revata-nāmnā by the name Revata ; api also ; raivataḥ Raivata ; nāma named ; parvataḥ mountain ; kuśasthalīm Kuśasthalī ; vinirmāya creating ; rājyam kingdom ; kṛtvā making ; atha then ; revataḥ Revata.

Translation

That mountain was named Raivata after him. Building a great capitol city named Kuśasthalī, Revata ruled the kingdom of Anarta.

samādāya svakāṁ kanyāṁ brahmalokaṁ jagāma ha baladeva-vivāhe 'pi tat-kathā kathitā mayā tasmād dvāravatīṁ puṇyāṁ mokśa-dvāraṁ viduḥ surāḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Revata took his daughter to Brahmaloka. That I have alredy described in the story of her marriage to Lord Balarāma. The demigods know that the sacred city of Dvārakā is the gateway to liberation. .pa
