śrī-kṛśṇasya sakhā kaścit sudāmā nāma brāhmaṇaḥ sa uvāsa sva-puryāṁ tu satyā ca bhāryayā\vṛtaḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Lord Kṛśṇa had a friend named Sudāmā, who was a brāhmaṇa living with his wife in his own city.

virakto dhana-hīnaś ca veda-vedāṇga-pāragaḥ samāna-śīlayā patnyā cakre vṛttim ayācitām

Synonyms

viraktaḥ renounced ; dhana-hīnaḥ poverty-stricken ; ca and ; veda-vedāṇga-pāragaḥ traveled to the farther shore of the Vedas and Vedāṇgas ; samāna equal ; śīlayā disposition ; patnyā with his wife ; cakre did ; vṛttim mode of livelihood ; ayācitām without begging.

Translation

He was poor and renounced. He had traveled to the farther shore of the Vedas and Vedāṇgas. He and his saintly like-minded wife lived without begging for their livelihood.

sa kadācit priyāṁ prāha sīdamānāṁ daridrataḥ śrī-kṛśṇo dvārakā-nātho mitraṁ mama pati-vrate

Translation

When his wife was unhappy because of their poverty, he said to her, “O chaste and devoted one, Śrī Kṛśṇa, the king of Dvārakā, is my friend.

Translation

When she heard these words, the brāhmaṇa's chaste and devoted wife, troubled by hunger, her garments ragged, and her voice now dry, said to her husband. “O brāhmaṇa, if Lord Kṛśṇa, the goddess of fortune's husband, is your friend, then why are we hungry and why do we wear ragged clothes? Everyone that goes to Dvārakā and sees Lord Kṛśṇa, the goddess of fortune's husband, returns wealthy. For this reason, please go to see Him."

śrī-sudāmovāca sarveśāṁ śikśako 'haṁ tvaṁ kasmai śikśāṁ pradāsyasi viprasya viduśo bhikśā dhanaṁ prakathitaṁ priye śrī-sudāmā uvāca—Śrī Sudāmā said; sarveśām—of all; śikśakaḥ—the teacher; aham—I; tvam—you; kasmai—to that; śikśām—teaching; pradāsyasi—you give; viprasya—of a brāhmaṇa; viduśaḥ—learned; bhikśā—begging; dhanam—wealth; prakathitam—said; priye—O beloved. Śrī Sudāmā said: I am a brāhmaṇa, the teacher of all. Why do you try to teach me? O dear one, it is said that the wealth of a learned brāhmaṇa is obtained by accepting alms."

śrī-priyovāca sakhā te śrī-patir yasya nāti-dūre pravartate tam upehi sa te duḥkhaṁ dāridryaṁ nāśayiśyati śrī-priyā uvāca—the wife said; sakhā—the friend; te—of you; śrī-patiḥ—the goddess of fortune's husband; yasya—of whom; na—not; ati-dūre—very far away; pravartate—is; tam—Him; upehi—approach; sa—He; te—your; duḥkham—unhappiness; dāridryam—poverty; nāśayiśyati—will destroy. His wife said: Your friend, Lord Kṛśṇa, the goddess of fortune's husband, lives not far from here. Please go to Him. He will remove your miserable poverty.

gatā avasthā mama te duḥkha-dāridrya-bhujṣatoḥ dātuḥ kṛpa-nidheḥ kānta mitratāyāś ca kiṁ phalam

Translation

Generous Lord Kṛśṇa, who is an ocean of kindness, will remove our miserable poverty. O my beloved, will this not be the result of your friendship with Him?

śrī-sudāmovāca vidhinā likhitaṁ bhāgyaṁ tat tathaiva bhaviśyati yātāyātena kiṁ bhadre harer dhyānaṁ karomy aham śrī-sudāmā uvāca”Śrī Sudāmā said; vidhinā—by fate; likhitam—written; bhāgyam—good fortune; tat—that; tathā—so; eva—indeed; bhaviśyati—will be; yātāyātena—by coming and going; kim—what?; bhadre—O beautiful one; hareḥ—of Lord Kṛśṇa; dhyānam—meditation; karomy—do; aham—I. Śrī Sudāmā said: Everyone's destiny is already written. What will be will be. O beautiful one, what is the use of running here and there to try to alter what is already destined? I will meditate of Lord Kṛśṇa.

yad-dvāri deśe rājāno deva-gandharva-kinnarāḥ ājṣāṁ vinā na yāsyanti dīnasya mama kā kathā

yad-dvāri at His door ; deśe in the country\ ; rājānaḥ many kings ; deva-gandharva-kinnarāḥ demigods, gandharvas, and kinnaras ; ājṣām by the order ; vinā without ; na not ; yāsyanti will go ; dīnasya poor ; mama of me ; what? ; kathā can be said.

Translation

Many demigods, gandharvas, kinnaras, and great kings approach the entrance to His palace, but without His permission none can enter. What can be said of poor me?

śrī-priyovāca vinājṣāṁ naiva yāsyanti deva-gandharva-kinnarāḥ āntar-yāmī hariḥ śīghraṁ dūtāis tvam āhvayiśyati śrī-priyā uvāca—his wife said; vinā—without; ājṣām—the order; na—not; eva—indeed; yāsyanti—will go; deva-gandharva-kinnarāḥ—demigods, gandharvas, and kinnaras; āntar-yāmī—staying in everyone's heart; hariḥ—Lord Kṛśṇa; śīghram—for a long time; dūtāiḥ—with messengers; tvam—you; āhvayiśyati—will call. His wife said: Without His permission the demigods, gandharvas, and kinnaras cannot enter. Still, He is the Supersoul in everyone's heart. He will send His messengers to call you to Him.

śrī-vipra uvāca dayālur īdṛśaḥ kṛśṇo paraṁ tu śṛṇu bhāmini vipatti-kāle mitrasya na gacched gṛham uttamam śrī-vipra uvāca—the brāhmaṇa said; brāhman—the Supreme Brahman; dayāluḥ—merciful; īdṛśaḥ—like this; kṛśṇaḥ—Śrī Kṛśṇa; param—great; tu—indeed; śṛṇu—hear; bhāmini—O beautiful one; vipatti-kāle—at the time of catastrophe; mitrasya—of a friend; na—not; gacchet—went; gṛham—to the home; uttamam—great. The brāhmaṇa said: It is true. Lord Kṛśṇa is merciful like that. Still, O beautiful one, please listen. When a wealthy friend was in trouble once, still Lord Kṛśṇa did not go to visit his palace.

kathaṁ tu yācanāṁ kurve cirād dṛśṭvā svakaṁ priyam nirlobhāt tu bhavet prītir yācanāt tu gamiśyati

Translation

How can I see my old friend and then ask something from Him? My greedy request will chase away His love for me.

śrī-priyovāca duḥkha-dāridrya-haraṇaṁ śrī-harer darśanaṁ kuru yācanā naiva kartavyā sa te 'rthaṁ bahu dāsyati evaṁ tu priyayā vipro bahudhaivaṁ prabhāśitaḥ śrī-priyā uvāca—his wife said; duḥkha-dāridrya-haraṇam—removing the unhappy poverty; śrī-hareḥ—of Lored Kṛśṇa; darśanam—the sight; kuru—please do; yācanā—request; na—not; eva—indeed; kartavyā—should be done; sa—He; te—to you; artham—wealth; bahu—great; dāsyati—will give; evam—thus; tu—indeed; priyayā—by his wife; vipraḥ—the brāhmaṇa; bahudhā—in many ways; evam—thus; prabhāśitaḥ—was addressed. His wife said: Simply seeing Lord Kṛśṇa will remove your unhappy poverty. You need not ask Him for anything. Of His own accord He will give great wealth to you. In this way she spoke many words to the brāhmaṇa.

ayaṁ hi paramo lābhaḥ kṛtvā mitrasya darśanam upāyanaṁ tu kiṁ dāsye lajjito 'haṁ daridrataḥ

Translation

The brāhmaṇa said: Seeing my friend, Lord Kṛśṇa is the greatest attainment. Still, what gift will i give to Him when I see Him? I will be embarrassed by my poverty.

ity uktvā sā gatā śīghraṁ para-gehaṁ tadā satī taṇḍulāṁś caturo muśṭīn yācitvā sva-gṛhaṁ yayau

Translation

Then the saintly woman went to a neighbor's home, begged four palmsful of rice, and returned.

jīrṇa-karpaṭa-khaṇḍe ca baddhvā tān pataye dadau

Synonyms

Translation

Then, tying the rice in a ragged piece of cloth, she gave it to her husband.

tato gṛhītvā pṛthukāṁś ca taṇḍulān kucaila-dhārī malinaś ca durbalaḥ jagāma kṛśṇasya purīṁ śanaiḥ śanair brahmaṇya-devaṁ manasā ca saṁsmaran

Translation

Taking that chipped rice with him, weak, dirty, dressed in rags, and always meditating on Lord Kṛśṇa, the master of the brāhmaṇas, the brāhmaṇa went to Lord Kṛśṇa's city of Dvārakā.

Translation

Crossing the ocean in a boat, the brāhmaṇa gazed at Lord Kṛśṇa Dvārakā City, which was carefully protected by the powerful Yādavas, and which was wonderful with many golden palaces, assembly-halls, fortresses, and crossroads.

dṛśṭvā kṛśṇa-purīṁ vipro janān āpṛcchya śrī-hareḥ śrī-mandiraṁ tu kutrāste sarve vadata sāmpratam

Gazing at Lord Kṛśṇa's city, the brāhmaṇa asked the people, “Where is Lord Kṛśṇa's beautiful palace?" The people replied, “All are Lord Kṛśṇa's palaces."

iti śrutvā mādhavasya bhavanānāṁ ca rakśakāḥ ūcus te vartate kṛśṇaḥ sarveśu mandireśu ca

Hearing this, entering one of the palaces, and then seeing Lord Kṛśṇa sitting on His bed, the brāhmaṇa became filled with spiritual bliss.

In a golden basin the Lord washed his feet and then sprinkled the water on His own head. Then Lord had him sit on the bed.

śrī-sudamovāca deva-deva gurus tvaṁ tu koṭi-brahmāṇḍa-nāyakaḥ śrī-pates tasya guruśu vāso 'tyanta-viḍambanam śrī-sudamā uvāca—Śrī Sudāmā said; deva-deva—O master of the demigods; guruḥ—the guru; tvam—You; tu—indeed; koṭi—of millions; brahmāṇḍa—of universes; nāyakaḥ—the master; śrī-pateḥ—of the goddess of fortune's husband; tasya—of Him; guruśu—in the gurus; vāsaḥ—the residenbce; atyanta—great; viḍambanam—imitation. Śrī Sudāmā said: O master of the demigods, You are the guru of everyone. You are the master of millions of universes. You are the origin of Lord Nārāyaṇa, the husband of the goddess of fortune. You were only pretending to be an ordinary student at our guru's home.

tataḥ sudāmā vipras tu kṛśṇāya paramātmane pṛthukāṁs taṇḍulān rājan na prayacchad avāṇ-mukhaḥ

Translation

Aware of the reason for the brāhmaṇa's visit, Lord Kṛśṇa, who is the Supersoul present in everyone's heart, thought, “This brāhmaṇa does not serve Me because he wants material opulence or liberation.

bhāryā pati-vratā duḥkhād dhanāśāṁ cāsya kurvatī tasmād dhanaṁ kathaṁ dāsye adātroś ca tayor aham

Translation

“His chaste and devoted wife is distressed and she desires wealth, but how can I give wealth to them when they have not given anything to Me?"

Translation

After saying this to Himself, the Lord understood what had happened. He thought, “He came here taking a gift of rice for Me, but now he is embarrassed and he will not give it.

tasmāt tu yācanāṁ kurve viditvaivaṁ vaco 'bravīt

Translation

“Therefore I will ask him for it." After thinking in this way, Lord Kṛśṇa spoke.

śrī-kṛśṇa uvāca gṛhān mad-arthe bhavatā kim ānītam upāyanaṁ anv apy upāhṛtaṁ yac ca bhaktyā bhūri bhaviśyati śrī-kṛśṇa uvāca—Śrī Kṛśṇa said; gṛhat—from home; mad-arthe—for my sake; bhavatā—by you; kim—what?; ānītam—brought; upāyanam—gift; anv—following; apy—also; upāhṛtam—brought; yac—what; ca—and; bhaktyā—with love; bhūri—great; bhaviśyati—will be. Śrī Kṛśṇa said: Did you bring from your home a gift for Me? Is there a gift that with great love you will offer to Me?

patraṁ puśpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati tad ahaṁ bhakty-upahṛtaṁ asnā\mi prayatātmanaḥ

“I used to eat excellent chipped rice like this in Gokula. My mother, Yaśodā-devī, would always give me rice like this. After that time I had never seen this kind of rice again."

ity eka-muśṭiṁ jagdhvā ca bhūmijāṁ sampadaṁ dadau dvitīyaṁ jagdhum ārebhe dātuṁ pātāla-sampadam

Translation

Lord Kṛśṇa then ate one palmful of that rice and He was about to eat a second.

tāvad vakśa-sthalāc chīghraṁ jaghṛe śrīḥ karaṁ hareḥ aparādhād vinā nātha kathaṁ māṁ tyaktum icchasi

Translation

Then the goddess of fortune, who was resting on His chest, suddenly grasped His hand and said, “Lord, I have not offended You. Why do You wish to leave Me?

etāvatālaṁ śrī-kṛśṇa śakra-tulyo dvijo bhavet dvijena nirdhanenāpi na jṣātaṁ tad-rahasyakam

Translation

“Because of what You have just done, this brāhmaṇa will become King Indra's equal." The poverty-stricken brāhmaṇa did not understand the secret of what had just happened.

sampūrṇaṁ ca dhanaṁ prāptaṁ sva-gṛhe viśṇu-māyayā uśitvā rajanim ekaṁ bhuktvā pītvā sukhaṁ gataḥ

Translation

The brāhmaṇa stayed there for one night. Eating and drinking, he became happy. Meanwhile, Lord Viśṇu's yogamāyā potency filled his home with all opulences.

śvo-bhūte sva-gṛhān gantuṁ kṛśṇaṁ natvā mano dadhe sa cājṣāpto bhagavatā vanditaḥ parirambhitaḥ

Translation

The next day the brāhmaṇa decided to return to his own home. He bowed down before Lord Kṛśṇa and received permission to leave. Then the Lord bowed before him and embraced him.

yācanā na kṛtā tena vrīḍitaḥ sva-gṛhān yayau brahmaṇyatā mayā dṛśṭā vipra-devasya śrī-pateḥ

Embarrassed, he had not asked for anything. As he returned home, he thought, “I have seen how Lord Kṛśṇa, the master of the brāhmaṇas and the husband of the goddess of fortune, dearly loves the brāhmaṇas.

ahaṁ daridraḥ kṛśṇasya bāhubhyāṁ parirambhitaḥ priyā-juśṭe ca paryaṇke bhrāteva sthāpito dvijaḥ

vījito vyajanenāpi rukmiṇyā satyabhāmayā nirdhanas tu dhanaṁ labdhvā śrī-patiṁ naiva saṁsmaret

itthaṁ karuṇayā mahyaṁ dhanaṁ kṛśṇo na dattavān itthaṁ vicārayan gacchan saṁsmaran brāhmaṇīṁ ruśā

“It is for this reason that Lord Kṛśṇa, out of His great kindness, did not offer me any wealth." Then the brāhmaṇa remembered his wife. The thought made him angry.

He thought, “If when I saw Him I had heard generous Lord Kṛśṇa, the master of the brāhmaṇas, say, `I say please take wealth many millions of times over,' then I would become a proud and wealthy miser. Lord Kṛśṇa must have thought, “Why should I curse My friend in this way, so for no reason he will become a greedy miser."

toraṇaiḥ kalaśaiś citraiḥ prāsādaiḥ sujanair vṛtam dvārakām iva śobhāḍhyāṁ sarva-ratnaiḥ prapūritām

Translation

dṛśṭvā vipras tu kim idaṁ kasya sthānam iti bruvan rathyāṁ rathyāṁ bhramantaṁ taṁ pratyagṛhnan striyo narāḥ

As beautiful men and women walked on the wide pathways in the palace, the brāhmaṇa stared at everything and said, “What is this? Whose home is this?"

nāgacchantaṁ dvijaṁ dṛśṭvā kiṇkaryaḥ kiṇkarās tathā svaminyai kathayām āsuḥ śrutvā sa vismayaṁ gatā

bhartāram āgataṁ śrutvā patnī sambhrama-samyutā niścakrāmālayāt tūrṇaṁ sākśāc chrīr iva rūpiṇī

brāhmaṇī śibikārūḍhā dāsī-dāsa-gaṇair vṛtā bhramantam agrahīd vipraṁ darśayitvā svakaṁ sukham

Translation

Surrounded by many servants and maidservants, she rode to him on a palanquin. Showing how happy she was to see him, she embraced her husband as he was walking about.

Seeing that his wife had become a splendid young girl dressed in exquisite golden clothing, decorated with jewels, and beautiful like the goddess of fortune riding in a spiritual airplane, the brāhmaṇa became very happy and thought that this was all done by the mercy of Lord Kṛśṇa.

Translation

Translation

Without becoming materialistic, the brāhmaṇa enjoyed the wealth he received by the Lord's causeless mercy. Filled with knowledge, renunciation, and devotion for the Lord, in their hearts he and his wife abandoned all material desires.

cakāra tarkanāṁ vipraḥ kuto mama samṛddhayaḥ dattā brahmaṇya-devena devānām api durlabhāḥ

Translation

The brāhmaṇa thought: Who gave me these opulences? It must be that Lord Kṛśṇa, who is the master of the brāhmaṇas, gave me these opulences even the great demigods cannot achieve.

idṛśīṁ sampadaṁ dattvā nācaret kim api svayam mama taṇḍula-muśṭiṁ ca prītyā pratyagrahīd dhariḥ

tasya sakhyaṁ ca dāsyaṁ ca bhūyān me janma-janmani tat-padāmburuha-dhyānāt tariśye 'haṁ bhavārṇavam

vicintya cetthaṁ manasā sudāmā patnyāvṛtaḥ kṛśṇa-padāravinde manaś ca kṛtvā dhanam eva viprān dattvā harer dhāma paraṁ jagāma

Engaged in meditating on Lord Kṛśṇa's lotus feet and giving charity to the brāhmaṇas, Sudāmā and his wife finally returned to Lord Kṛśṇa's supreme abode.

etac chrī-kṛśṇadevasya caritaṁ śṛṇuyān naraḥ dāridryān mucyate śīghraṁ bhakto bhagavato bhavet

Translation

O king, now I have spoken to you the very sacred Dvārakā-khaṇḍa, which gives fame, good family, devotional service, and liberation to they who regularly hear it.
