tasmin girau yajṣa-tīrthaṁ raivatena kṛtaṁ purā yatra kṛtvā yajṣam ekaṁ koṭi-yajṣa-phalaṁ labhet

Synonyms

Translation

On this mountain King Raivata built a yajṣa-tīrtha. By performing a yajṣa at this place one attains the result of performing ten million yajṣas.

kapiṭaṅkaṁ nāma tīrthaṁ kapi-pāta-samudbhavam girau raivatake rājan sarva-pāpa-praṇāśanam

Synonyms

Translation

O king, this holy place, which destroys all sins, was named Kapiṭaṅka because it was created by the jumping of a gorilla (kapi).

bhaumāsura-sakho duṣṭo dviviḍo nāma vānaraḥ mārito yatra rāmeṇa muṣṭinā vajra-pātinā

Synonyms

bhaumāsura-sakhaḥ a freind of Bhaumasura ; duṣṭaḥ a demon ; dviviḍaḥ Dvivida ; nāma named ; vānaraḥ a gorilla ; māritaḥ killed ; yatra where ; rāmeṇa by Balarāma ; muṣṭinā with a fist ; vajra-pātinā a thunderbolt.

Translation

With His thunderbolt fist, Lord Balarāma killed Bhaumāsura's friend, the demon gorilla Dviviḍa, in this place.

sadyo muktiṁ gataḥ so 'pi satāṁ helanavān api tatra snātuṁ sadā devā āgacchanti nareśvara

Synonyms

sadyaḥ at once ; muktim liberation ; gataḥ attained ; so 'pi he ; satām to the devotees ; helanavān an offender ; api even ; tatra there ; snātum to bathe ; sadā again and again ; devāḥ the demigods ; āgacchanti come ; nareśvara O great king.

Translation

Even though he had offended many siantly persons, that gorilla attained liberation at that place. O great king, the demigods regularly come to bathe there.

kalaviṅkasya yātrāyāṁ koṭi-go-dāna-jaṁ phalam etasya dvi-guṇaṁ puṇyaṁ daṇḍakākhye vane śubhe

Synonyms

kalaviṅkasya of Kalaviṅka-tīrtha ; yātrāyām in apilgrimage ; koṭi-go-dāna-jam born from giving ten million cows in charity ; phalam the result ; etasya of that ; dvi-guṇam double ; puṇyam piety ; daṇḍakākhye in Daṇḍaka Forest ; vane in the forest ; śubhe sacred.

Translation

By going on pilgrimage to Kalaviṅka-tīrtha and giving ten million cows in charity one attains a great pious result. This pious result is doubled when the pilgrimage and charity are performed in sacred Daṇḍakāraṇya.

tasmāc catur-guṇaṁ puṇyaṁ saindhavākhye mahā-vane jambu-mārge paṣca-guṇaṁ puṇyaṁ prāpnoti mānavaḥ

Synonyms

Translation

A person attains a pious result is four times as great at Saindhavāraṇya and five times greater than that at Jambu-mārga.

tasmād daśa-guṇaṁ puṇyaṁ puṣkarākhye vane smṛtaṁ tasmād daśa-guṇaṁ puṇyaṁ utpalāvārta-yātrayā

Translation

tasmāc ca naimiṣāraṇye puṇyaṁ daśa-guṇaṁ smṛtam tasmāc chata-guṇaṁ puṇyaṁ kapiṭaṅke videha-rāṭ

Translation

nṛga-kūpaṁ dvārakāyāṁ tīrthānāṁ tīrtham uttamam yasya darśana-mātreṇa vipra-vadhyāt pramucyate

Synonyms

Translation

Nṛga-kūpa at Dvārakā is the best of holy places. Simply by seeing it one becomes free of the sin of killing a brāhmaṇa.

ajṣānād brāhmaṇasyāpi gāṁ dadau brāhmaṇāya saḥ tena pāpena kūpe vai kṛkalāsa-vapur-dharaḥ ajṣānāt—from ignorance; brāhmaṇasya—of a brāhmaṇa; api—also; gām—a cow; dadau—gave; brāhmaṇāya—to a brāhmaṇa; saḥ—he; tena—by that; pāpena—sin; kūpe—in a well; vai—indeed; kṛkalāsa—of a lizard; vapuḥ—the form; dharaḥ—manifesting. Unaware of what he was doing, King Nṛga gave in charity to a brāhmaṇa a cow that belonged to another brāhmaṇa. For this sin he became a lizard in a well.

nṛgo 'pi dānināṁ śreṣṭhaḥ patito 'tha catur-yugam śrī-kṛṣṇena tad-uddhāraḥ kṛto vai paśyatāṁ satām

Translation

In this way King Nṛga, who had been the best of charitable men, fell into a wretched condition for four yugas. Finally, as the saintly devotees looked on, he was delivered by Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Translation

Hearing its glories removes all sins.

yasya śravaṇa-mātreṇa karma-bandhāt pramucyate gopīnāṁ yatra vāso 'bhūt tena gopī-bhuvaḥ smṛtaḥ

Translation

Simply by hearing about Gopī-bhūmi, which is so named because the gopīs resided there, one become free from the bondage of karma.

gopy-aṅgarāga-sambhūtaṁ gopī-candānām uttamam gopī-candana-liptāṅgo gaṅgā-snāna-phalaṁ labhet

Synonyms

Translation

In Gopī-bhūmi gopī-candana was manifested from the gopīs' cosmetics. A person who marks his limbs with gopī-candana tilaka attains the result of bathing in the Gaṅgā.

mahā-nadīnāṁ snānasya puṇyaṁ tasya dine dinegopī-candana-mūdrābhir mūdrito yaḥ sadā bhavet

Synonyms

mahā-nadīnām of great sacred rivers ; snānasya of bathing ; puṇyam the pious result ; tasya of that ; dine day ; dine after day ; gopī-candana of gopī-candana ; mūdrābhiḥ by marking ; mūdritaḥ marked ; yaḥ who ; sadā always ; bhavet is.

Translation

A person who daily wears gopī-candana tilaka attains the pious result of daily bathing in all sacred rivers.

aśvamedha-sahasrāṇi rājasūya-śatāni ca sarvāṇi tīrtha-dānāni vratāni ca tathaiva ca kṛtāni tena nityaṁ vai sa kṛtārtho na saṁśayaḥ

Synonyms

aśvamedha-sahasrāṇi a thousand asvamedha-yajnas ; rājasūya-śatāni a hundred rajasuya-yajnas ; ca and ; sarvāṇi all ; tīrtha holy places ; dānāni giving charity ; vratāni following vows ; ca and ; tathā so ; eva indeed ; ca and ; kṛtāni done ; tena by him ; nityam daily ; vai indeed ; sa he ; kṛtārthaḥ attains the goal of life ; na no ; saṁśayaḥ doubt.

Translation

A person who daily wears gopī-candana tilaka attains the result of performing a thousand aśvamedha-yajṣas and a hundred rājasūya-yajṣas. He attains the reusult of giving charity and following vows at all holy places. He attains the goal of life. Of this there is no doubt.

gaṅgā-mṛd-dvi-guṇaṁ puṇyaṁ citrakūṭa-rajaḥ smṛtam tasmād daśa-guṇaṁ puṇyaṁ rajaḥ paṣcavatī-bhavam

Synonyms

gaṅgā of the Gaṅgā ; mṛt the mud ; dvi-guṇam twice ; puṇyam piety ; citrakūṭa-rajaḥ the dust of Citrakūṭa ; smṛtam considered ; tasmāt than that ; daśa-guṇam ten times ; puṇyam piety ; rajaḥ the dust ; paṣcavatī-bhavam of Paṣcavatī.

Translation

Twice as sacred as the mud of the Gaṅgā is the dust of Citrakūṭa. Ten times more sacred than that is the dust of Paṣcavatī-tīrtha.

tasmāc chata-guṇaṁ puṇyaṁ gopī-candanakaṁ rajaḥ gopī-candanakaṁ viddhi vṛndāvana-rajaḥ-samam

Synonyms

tasmāt than that ; śata-guṇam a hundred times ; puṇyam sacred ; gopī-candanakam gopī-candana ; rajaḥ dust ; gopī-candanakam gopī-candana ; viddhi please know ; vṛndāvana-rajaḥ-samam equal to the dust of Vṛndāvana.

Translation

A hundred times more sacred is the dust of gopī-candana. Please know that gopī-candana is equal to the dust of Vṛndāvana.

Verse text

gopī-candana-liptāṅgaṁ yadi pāpa-śatair yutam taṁ netuṁ na yamaḥ śakto yama-dūtāḥ kutaḥ punaḥ

Synonyms

gopī-candana-liptāṅgam limbs marked with gopī-candana ; yadi if ; pāpa-śataiḥ with a hundred sins ; yutam endowed ; tam him ; netum ot lead ; na not ; yamaḥ Yamarāja ; śaktaḥ is able ; yama-dūtāḥ the messengers of Yamarāja ; kutaḥ how? ; punaḥ again.

Translation

Even if in the past he has committed hundreds of sins, if a person wears gopī-candana tilaka, then Yamarāja cannot take him away. How, then, can Yamarāja's messengers touch him?

nityaṁ karoti yaḥ pāpī gopī-candana-dhāraṇam sa prayāti harer dhāma golokaṁ prakṛteḥ param

Synonyms

Translation

A sinner who daily wears gopī-candana tilaka goes to Lord Kṛṣṇa supreme abode, Goloka, which is beyond the world of matter.

sindhu-deśasya rājābhūd dīrghabāhur iti śrutaḥ anyāya-vartī duṣṭātmā veśyā-saṅga-rataḥ sadā sindhu-deśasya—of Sindhu-deśa; rājā—a king; abhūt—was; dīrghabāhuḥ—Dīrghabāhur; iti—thus; śrutaḥ—heard; anyāya—evil; vartī—doing; duṣṭātmā—wicked; veśyā-saṅga-rataḥ—attached to prostitutes; sadā—always. In Sindhu-deśa there was a king named Dīrghabāhu. He was cruel and sinful and he was addicted to visiting prostitutes.

tena vai bhārate varṣe brahma-hatyā-śataṁ kṛtam daśa garbhavatī-hatyāḥ kṛtās tena durātmanā

Synonyms

tena by him ; vai indeed ; bhārate varṣe in Bharat-varṣa ; brahma-hatyā-śatam killing a hundred brāhmaṇas ; kṛtam done ; daśa ten ; garbhavatī-hatyāḥ killing pregnant women ; kṛtāḥ done ; tena by him ; durātmanā wicked.

Translation

While he was on the earth this cruel sinner murdered a hundred brāhmaṇas and ten pregnant women.

mṛgayāyāṁ tu bāṇaughaiḥ kapilā-go-vadhaḥ kṛtaḥ saindhavaṁ hayam āruhya mṛgayārthī gato 'bhavat

Synonyms

mṛgayāyām in hunting ; tu indeed ; bāṇaughaiḥ with many arrows ; kapilā-go-vadhaḥ killing a brown cow ; kṛtaḥ done ; saindhavam a sindhu ; hayam horse ; āruhya mounting ; mṛgayārthī wishing to hunt ; gataḥ went ; abhavat did.

Translation

One day he mounted a sindhu horse and went hunting. With a flood of arrows he accidentally killed with a brown cow in that hunt.

ekadā rājya-lobhena mantrī kruddho mahā-khalam jaghānāraṇya-deśe taṁ tīkṣna-dhāreṇa cāsinā

Synonyms

ekadā one day ; rājya for a kingdom ; lobhena with greed ; mantrī minister ; kruddhaḥ angry ; mahā-khalam wicked ; jaghāna killed ; āraṇya-deśe in the forest ; tam him ; tīkṣna-dhāreṇa with a sharp ; ca and ; asinā sword.

Translation

One day, greedy to get his kingdom, with a sharp sword his angry minister killed him in the forest.

bhū-tale patitaṁ mṛtyu- gataṁ vīkṣya yamānugāḥ baddhvā yama-purīṁ ninyur harṣayantaḥ parasparam

Synonyms

bhū-tale to the ground ; patitam fallen ; mṛtyu-gatam dead ; vīkṣya seeing ; yamānugāḥ the yamadūtas ; baddhvā binding ; yama-purīm to the city of yama ; ninyuḥ led ; harṣayantaḥ joking ; parasparam among themselves.

Translation

Seeing him fallen to the ground and dead, the Yamadūtas came, bound him, and, joking as they went, took him to the city of Yamarāja.

sammukhe 'vasthitaṁ vīkṣya pāpinaṁ yama-rāḍ balī citraguptaṁ prāha tūrṇaṁ kā yogyā yānatāsya vai

Synonyms

sammukhe in the presence ; avasthitam situated ; vīkṣya seeing ; pāpinam sinner ; yama-rāḍ yamarāja ; balī powerful ; citraguptam to Citragupta ; prāha said ; tūrṇam quickly ; what? ; yogyā is proper ; yānatā punishment ; asya of him ; vai certainly.

Translation

Seeing this sinner brought before him, powerful Yamarāja said to his scribe Citragupta, "What is the proper punishment for him?"

śrī-citragupta uvāca catur-aśīti-lakṣeṣu narakeṣu nipatyatām niḥsandehaṁ mahā-rāja yāvac candra-divākarau

Synonyms

śrī-citragupta uvāca Śrī Citragupta said ; catur-aśīti-lakṣeṣu eight million four hundred thousand ; narakeṣu into hells ; nipatyatām should fall ; niḥsandeham without doubt ; mahā-rāja O great king ; yāvat as longas ; candra the moon ; divākarau and the sun.

Translation

Śrī Citragupta said: O great king, he should be thrown into eight million four hundred thousand hells for as long as the sun and the moon shine in the sky.

anena bhārate varṣe kṣaṇaṁ na su-kṛtaṁ kṛtam daśa-garbhavatī-ghātaḥ kapilā-go-vadhaḥ kṛtaḥ

Translation

On the earth he did not perform a single pious deed. He killed ten pregnant women. He killed a brown cow.

tathā vana-mṛgānāṁ ca kṛtvā hatyāḥ sahasraśaḥ tasmād ayaṁ mahā-pāpī devatā-dvija-nindakaḥ

Synonyms

Translation

He killed thousands of deer in the forest. He offended the demigods and the brāhmaṇas. He is a great sinner.

śrī-nārada uvāca tadā yamājṣayā dūtā nitvā taṁ pāpa-rūpiṇam sahasra-yojanāyāme tapta-taile mahā-khale

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Then, by Yamarāja's order, the Yamadūtas took that sinner and threw him into a terrible, eight-thousand mile wide cauldron of bubbling boiling oil in the hell of Kumbhīpāka. The moment that sinner came to it, the boiling oil, which was as hot as the great fires at the time of cosmic devastation, suddenly became cool.

Translation

O king of Videha, as Prahlāda was unhurt in the same situation, that sinner was not hurt by the boiling oil. Then the Yamadūtas described that great wonder to noble-hearted Yamarāja.

anena su-kṛtaṁ bhūmau kṣaṇavan na kṛtaṁ kvacit citraguptena satataṁ dharma-rājo vyacintayat

Translation

Yamarāja and Citragupta carefully reviewed the sinner's case and concluded that while he was on the earth the sinner had not for a moment performed even a single pious deed.

sabhāyām āgataṁ vyāsaṁ sampūjya vidhivan nṛpa natvā papraccha dharmātmā dharma-rājo mahā-matiḥ

Translation

Then Vyāsadeva arrived in that assembly. Bowing down before Him, and carefully worshiping Him, saintly and noble-hearted Yamarāja asked Vyāsadeva the following question.

śrī-yama uvāca anena pāpinā pūrvaṁ na kṛtaṁ su-kṛtaṁ kvacit sphurad-agny-ucchalat-phene kumbhīpāke mahā-khale

Translation

asya kṣepanato vahniḥ sadyaḥ śītalatāṁ gataḥ iti sandehataś cetaḥ khidyate me na saṁśayaḥ śrī-yama uvāca—Śrī Yamarāja said; anena—by this; pāpinā—sinner; pūrvam—before; na—not; kṛtam—done; su-kṛtam—pious deed; kvacit—ever; sphurad-agny-ucchalat-phene—bubbling with fire; kumbhīpāke—in the burning Kumbhīpāka; mahā-khale—terrible; asya—of him; kṣepanataḥ—by the throwing; vahniḥ—the fire; sadyaḥ—at once; śītalatām—coolness; gataḥ—attained; iti—thus; sandehataḥ—by doubt; cetaḥ—mind; khidyate—is tormented; me—of me; na—no; saṁśayaḥ—doubt. Śrī Yamarāja said: When a certain sinner, who had never performed even a single pious deed, was thrown into the terrible boiling oil of Kumbhīpāka, the oil suddenly became cool. Because of this my mind is now tortured with doubts.

śrī-vyāsa uvāca sūkṣmā gatir mahā-rāja viditā pāpa-puṇyayoḥ tathā brahma-gatiḥ prājṣaiḥ sarva-śāstra-vidāṁ varaiḥ

Translation

Śrī Vyāsadeva said: O great king, the intelligent sages, who have studied all the scriptures, know that the ways of piety, sin, and spiritual progress are very subtle and difficult to understand.

daiva-yogād asya puṇyaṁ prāptaṁ vai svayam arthavat yena puṇyena śuddho 'sau tac chṛnu tvaṁ mahā-mate

Translation

Somehow or other, by destiny, this sinner did perform a pious deed, and by that deed he became purified. O noble-hearted one, please hear the story of this.

kasyāpi hastato yatra patitā dvārakā-mṛdaḥ tatraivāyaṁ mṛtaḥ pāpī śuddho 'bhūt tat-prabhāvataḥ

Translation

That sinner died in a place where from someone's hand some gopī-candana from Dvārakā had accidentally fallen. Dying in gopī-candana, that sinner became purified.

gopī-candana-liptāṅgo naro nārāyaṇo bhavet etasya darśanāt sadyo brahma-hatyā pramucyate

gopī-candana-liptāṅgaḥ his body marked with gopī-vandrana ; naraḥ a person ; nārāyaṇaḥ like Lord Nārāyaṇa ; bhavet becames ; etasya of him ; darśanāt by the sight ; sadyaḥ at once ; brahma-hatyā the sin of killing a brāhmaṇa ; pramucyate is released.

Translation

A person who wears gopī-candana tilaka attains a spiritual form like that of Lord Nārāyaṇa. Simply by seeing him one becomes free of the sin of killing a brāhmaṇa.

Śrī Nārada said: Hearing this, Yamarāja, who understands the glories of gopī-candana, took the sinner, placed him a an airplane that goes anywhere one wishes, and sent him to Vaikuṇṭha, which is above the worlds of matter. O king, thus I have described to you the glories of gopī-candana.

One who hears this account of gopī-candana's glories becomes exalted. He goes to the supreme abode of Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
