Verse text

śrī-nārada uvāca evaṁ tasya vacaḥ śrutvā bhagavān vṛjinārdanaḥ cāṇūreṇāpi yuyudhe muṣṭikena balo balī

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; evam thus ; tasya of him ; vacaḥ the words ; śrutvā hearing ; bhagavān the Supreme Personality of Godhead ; vṛjinārdanaḥ who removes all distress ; cāṇūreṇa with Canura ; api also ; yuyudhe fought ; muṣṭikena with Mustika ; balaḥ Balarāma ; balī strong.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Hearing these words, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who removes all troubles, proceeded to fight with Cāṇūra. Then Balarāma proceeded to fight with Muṣṭika.

ākarṣaṇaṁ nodanaṁ ca bhujābhyāṁ bhuja-daṇḍayoḥ cakratuḥ paśyatāṁ nṛṇāṁ gajāv iva jigīṣayā

Synonyms

ākarṣaṇam pulling ; nodanam pushing ; ca and ; bhujābhyām with both arms ; bhuja-daṇḍayoḥ of the arms ; cakratuḥ did ; paśyatām watching ; nṛṇām of the people ; gajāv two elephants ; iva like ; jigīṣayā wishing victory.

Translation

As the people watched, Kṛṣṇa and Cāṇura wrestled, pulling and pushing each other with both arms. They were like two elephants trying to defeat each other.

hastābhyāṁ vapur utthāpya cāṇūrasya hariḥ svayam atolayad deha-bhāraṁ puṇya-bhāraṁ yathā vidhiḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Picking him up with both arms, Kṛṣṇa weighed Cāṇūra, as the demigod Brahma weighs the heaviness of someone's pious deeds.

cāṇūras taṁ hariṁ devaṁ kareṇaikena līlayā ujjahāra mahā-vīro bhū-khaṇḍaṁ nāga-rāḍ iva

grīvāyāṁ kila cāṇūraṁ bhuja-vegena mādhavaḥ kaṭyāṁ coddhṛtya sahasā pātayām āsa bhū-tale

Synonyms

grīvāyām on the neck ; kila indeed ; cāṇūram Canura ; bhuja-vegena with the power of His arms ; mādhavaḥ Kṛṣṇa ; kaṭyām on the waist ; ca and ; uddhṛtya lifting ; sahasā suddenly ; pātayām āsa threw ; bhū-tale to the ground.

Translation

With one hand on his neck and the other on his waist, Kṛṣṇa suddenly picked up Cāṇūra and threw him to the gound.

hastaiś ca jānubhiḥ pādair bhujair aṅguli-muṣṭibhiḥ jaghnatuḥ kṛṣṇa-cāṇūrau tathaiva bala-muṣṭikau

Synonyms

Translation

Hitting each other with Their hands, knees, feet, arms, fingers, and fists, Kṛṣṇa and Cāṇūra fought. Balarāma and Muṣṭika also fought in the same way.

śrama-vāri-yute dṛṣṭvā śrī-mukhe rāma-kṛṣṇayoḥ sānukampās tadā prāhur gavākṣa-sthāḥ nṛpa-striyaḥ

Synonyms

śrama-vāri-yute with drops of perspiration ; dṛṣṭvā seeing ; śrī-mukhe on the handsome face ; rāma-kṛṣṇayoḥ of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma ; sānukampāḥ filled with compassion ; tadā then ; prāhuḥ said ; gavākṣa-sthāḥ staying in the windows ; nṛpa-striyaḥ the king's women.

Translation

Gazing at the handsome perspiring faces of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, the women of the palace became filled with compassion for Them. Standing in the palace windows, they spoke.

śrī-striya ūcuḥ aho adharmaḥ su-mahat-sabhāyāṁ jātaḥ puro rājani vartamāne kva vajra-tulyāṅga-vṛtau hi mallau kva puṣpa-tulyau bata rāma-kṛṣṇau

Translation

The women said: An impious fight is now happening in the royal assembly in the king's presence. How can Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, who are like two flowers, be an equal match with these two wrestlers, who have bodies like thunderbolts?

aho hy abhāgyaṁ hi puraukasāṁ no yuddhe tayor darśanam adya jātam aho 'ti-dhanyaṁ bata bhūri-bhāgyaṁ vanaukasāṁ rāsa-rasena jātam

Synonyms

Translation

The people of Mathurā City are very unfortunate that they must see such a fight. The girls in the forest were fortunate. They could taste the nectar of the rāsa-dance with Lord Kṛṣṇa.

aho sthite rājani duṣṭa-citte na ko 'pi vaktuṁ kṣama eva sakhyaḥ tasmād dhi naḥ puṇya-balena cet tau tvaraṁ mṛdhe vai jayatām arīn svān

Translation

śrī-nārada uvāca ardra-cittaṁ nanda-rājaṁ vanitānāṁ manoratham smṛtvā śatrūn hantu-kāmas cakre yuddhaṁ balād dhariḥ

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Thinking of how King Nanda's heart was melting and how the women were praying in this way, Lord Kṛṣṇa, yearning to kill them, ferociously attacked His opponents.

gṛhītvā bhuja-daṇḍābhyāṁ cāṇūraṁ gagane balāt cikṣepa sahasā kṛṣṇo vātaḥ padmam ivoddhṛtam

Suddenly grabbing him with both hands, Lord Kṛṣṇa threw Cāṇura into the sky, as a great wind uproots and throws a lotus flower.

ākāśāt patitaḥ so 'pi tārakena hy adho-mukhaḥ utthāya muṣṭinā kṛṣṇaṁ tāḍayām āsa vegataḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Like a comet Caṇūra fell headfirst from the sky. Standing up, he violently punched Kṛṣṇa.

tasya muṣṭi-prahāreṇa na cacāla parāt paraḥ sadyo gṛhītvā cāṇūraṁ pātayām āsa bhū-tale

Synonyms

tasya of him ; muṣṭi-prahāreṇa by the punch ; na not ; cacāla wavered ; parāt than the greatest ; paraḥ greater ; sadyaḥ at once ; gṛhītvā grabbing ; pātayām āsa threw ; bhū-tale to the ground.

Translation

Unmoved by the punch, Lord Kṛṣṇa, who is greater than the greatest, suddenly grabbed Cāṇūra and threw him to the ground.

bhinna-dantas tu cāṇūraḥ krodha-yukto madotkaṭaḥ muṣṭi-dvayena śrī-kṛṣṇaṁ tatāḍa hṛdi maithila

Synonyms

Translation

O king of Mithilā, mad with anger, and his teeth now broken, with both fists Cāṇūra pounded Lord Kṛṣṇa's chest.

gṛhītvā karayos taṁ vai karābhyāṁ bhagavān svayaṁ kaṁsasyāgre bhrāmayitvā sarveṣāṁ paśyatāṁ nṛpa

pātayām āsa bhū-pṛṣṭhe kamaṇḍalum ivārbhakaḥ śrī-kṛṣṇasya prahāreṇa cāṇūro bhinna-mastakaḥ udvaman rudhiraṁ rājan sadyo vai nidhanaṁ gataḥ

Translation

As a child throws a kamaṇḍalu, Lord Kṛṣṇa threw Cāṇūra to the ground. O king, vomiting blood, and his head broken, Cāṇūra suddenly died.

tathaiva muṣṭikaṁ mallaṁ muṣṭibhir yudhi durgamam dhṛtvāṅghrau bhrāmayitvā khe baladevo mahā-balaḥ pātayām āsa bhū-pṛṣṭhe phaṇinaṁ garuḍo yathā muṣṭiko nidhanaṁ prāpa prodvaman rudhiraṁ mukhāt

Translation

In the same way powerful Lord Balarāma grabbed the feet of invincible Muṣṭika, whirled him around, and threw him to the ground as Garuḍa throws a snake. O king, vomiting blood from his mouth, Muṣṭika suddenly died.

kūṭaṁ samāgataṁ vīkṣya baladevo mahā-balaḥ muṣṭinā pātayām āsa vajreṇendro yathā girim

Translation

Seeing Kūṭa coming, with a single punch Lord Balarāma knocked him to the ground as with his thunderbolt Indra knocks down a mountain.

prāptaṁ śālaṁ nanda-sūnur lattayā taṁ tatāḍa ha tīkṣnayā tuṇḍayā rājan kadrujaṁ garuḍo yathā

Translation

When Śala approached, Lord Kṛṣṇa attacked him as with his beak Garuḍa attacks a snake.

gṛhītvā tośalaṁ kṛṣṇo madhyataḥ samvidārya ca prākṣipat kaṁsa-maṣcāgre viṭapaṁ sindhuro yathā

Translation

Then Kṛṣṇa grabbed Tośala, ripped him in two at the waist, and threw the two pieces into Kaṁsa's box as an elephant breaks and throws a tree.

ete nipatitā raṅge sadyo vai nidhanaṁ gatāḥ teṣāṁ jyotiṁsi vaikuṇṭhe viviśuḥ paśyatāṁ satām

Synonyms

Translation

As the saintly people of Mathurā looked on, the effulgent souls of the wrestlers killed in the arena entered the spiritual world of Vaikuṇṭha.

evaṁ śrī-rāma-kṛṣṇābhyāṁ malleṣu nihateṣu ca śeṣāḥ pradudruvur mallā bhayārtā jīvanecchayā

Translation

After many wrestlers were thus killed by Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, the others, terrified and intent on staying alive, fled.

śrīdāmādīn vayasyāṁś ca gopān ākṛṣya mādhavaḥ taiḥ sārdhaṁ yuddham ārebhe sarveṣāṁ paśyatāṁ satām

Translation

Then, calling Śrīdāmā and His other gopa friends, Kṛṣṇa began to fight with them as the saintly people of Mathurā looked on.

rāma-kṛṣṇau sahārbhakaiḥ viharantau vīkṣya raṅge visismuḥ pura-vāsinaḥ

Translation

kirīṭa-kuṇḍala-dharau As Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, wearing crowns and earrings, played with the gopa boys in the arena, the people of Mathurā gazed at Them and became filled with wonder.

kaṁsaṁ vinā sarva-mukhāj jaya-śabdo vinirgataḥ sādhu sādhv iti vādo 'bhūn nedur dundubhayas tataḥ

Synonyms

Translation

From every mouth, except Kaṁsa's, came the words Victory!" and "Bravo! Bravo!" Then all the dundubhi drums sounded.

svasyājayaṁ vīkṣya kaṁso varjayitvā tūrya-ghoṣaṁ prāha prasphuritādharaḥ

Synonyms

svasya of his own men ; ajayam the defeat ; vīkṣya seeing ; kaṁsaḥ Kaṁsa ; mahā-krodha-samākulaḥ overcome with anger ; varjayitvā stopping ; turya-ghoṣam the sound of the turyas ; prāha said ; prasphurita trembling ; adharaḥ lips.

Translation

mahā-krodha-samākulaḥ Seeing his own men defeated, Kaṁsa will filled with anger. Stopping the tūrya drums, he spoke, his lips trembling.

Verse text

kaṁsa uvāca durbuddhi-yuktau vasudeva-nandanau prasahya niḥsārayatāśu mat-purāt harantu sarvaṁ vraja-vāsināṁ dhanaṁ badhnīta nandaṁ sahasāti-durmatim

Synonyms

kaṁsa uvāca Kaṁsa said ; durbuddhi-yuktau unintelligent ; vasudeva-nandanau the two sons of Vasudeva ; prasahya forcibly ; niḥsārayata throw out ; āśu at once ; mat-purāt from my city ; harantu should take ; sarvam all ; vraja-vāsinām of the people of Vraja ; dhanam the wealth ; badhnīta bind ; nandam Nanda ; ati-durmatim wicked-hearted

Translation

Kaṁsa said: I order that the two fools that are Vasudeva's sons should at once be thrown out of my city. The wealth of Vraja's people should be plundered. Wicked-hearted Nanda should be bound and imprisoned.

adyograsenasya pituḥ ku-buddheḥ śaureḥ siraś cāśu hi chindhi chindhi kau yatra tatrāpi tathātra vṛṣṇi- jātān suraṁśān kila sūdayadhvam

Synonyms

Translation

Ugrasena, my foolish father, and foolish Vasudeva should both be beheaded. Wherever they are on this earth, the Vṛṣṇis, who are incarnations of the demigods, should be killed.

śrī-nārada uvāca evaṁ vikathamānasya kaṁsasya yadu-nandanaḥ sahasotpatya taṁ maṣcaṁ āruhat krodha-pūritaḥ

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; evam thus ; vikathamānasya speaking wildly ; kaṁsasya of Kaṁsa ; yadu-nandanaḥ Kṛṣṇa ; sahasā suddenly ; utpatya leaping ; tam that ; maṣcam box ; āruhat entered ; krodha-pūritaḥ filled with anger.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: As Kaṁsa was speaking in this wild way, Lord Kṛṣṇa, filled with anger, suddenly jumped into his box.

mṛtyuṁ samāgataṁ vīkṣya maṣcād utthāya sa-tvaram madoddhato bhartsayaṁs taṁ jagṛhe khaḍga-carmaṇī

Synonyms

mṛtyum death ; samāgatam come ; vīkṣya seeing ; maṣcāt from the box ; utthāya going ; sa-tvaram quickly ; madoddhataḥ wildly ; bhartsayan rebuking ; tam Him ; jagṛhe grabbed ; khaḍga a sword ; carmaṇī and shield.

Translation

Seeing that his death had come, Kaṁsa jumped from the box and, wildly rebuking Kṛṣṇa, grabbed a sword and shield.

agrahīt sahasā kaṁsaṁ dorbhyāṁ carmāsi-samyutam yathā tuṇḍa-vibhāgābhyāṁ sa-viṣaṁ phaṇināṁ virāṭ

Translation

As Kaṁsa tried to defend himself with sword and shield, Lord Kṛṣṇa suddenly grabbed him with both arms as Garuḍa grabs a poisonous snake in his beak.

patat-khaḍgaś calac-carmā bhuja-bandhād balād balī viniryayau tārkṣya-tuṇḍāt puṇḍarīko yathā phaṇī

Translation

Fighting with his sword and shield, Kaṁsa escaped Lord Kṛṣṇa's arms as the snake Puṇḍarīka escaped Garuḍa's beak.

In the box again, the two strong opponents hit each other very hard. They were like two splendid lions fighting on a mountaintop.

Translation

When Kaṁsa jumped a hundred hastas into the sky, Lord Kṛṣṇa jumped after him and grabbed him. They both fought like two eagles in the sky.

gṛhītvā bhuja-daṇḍābhyāṁ pracaṇḍaṁ daitya-puṅgavam trailokya-bala-dhṛg devo bhrāmayitvā tv itas tataḥ

Translation

Angry Kṛṣṇa then threw him into the box at the arena. The box shattered like a tree struck by lightning.

patito 'pi sa vajrāṅgaḥ kiṣcid vyākula-mānasaḥ sahasotthāya yuyudhe śrī-kṛṣṇena mahātmanā

The Kaṁsa, his body hard as thunderbolts and his mind a little agitated by all this, jumped from the box and continued to fight with Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

O king, the many kings ran here and there, exclaiming, Alas! Alas!" Then because in the rasa of hatred he had worshiped Lord Kṛṣṇa, the master of the demigods, Kaṁsa attained a spiritual form resembling the Lord's, as a kiṭaka insect attains the form of it's enemy, the bee.

krodha-prasphuritādharāḥ Seeing that Kaṁsa had fallen, Kaṁsa's eight brothers, Sṛṣṭi, Nyagrodha, Tuṣṭimān, Rāṣṭrapālaka, Suhu, Kaṅka, and Śaṅku, clutching swords and shields, and their lips trembling with rage, rushed Śrī Kṛṣṇa to fight with Him.

vīkṣya tān mudgaraṁ nītvā rohinī-nandano balaḥ ārāc cakāra huṅkāraṁ yathā siṁho mṛgān prati

The brothers were terrified by that roar. Their weapons suddenly fell, as mangoes fall when hit by a stick.

niḥśastrās te mahā-vīrā muṣṭibhiḥ sarvato balam teḍuḥ śailaṁ yathā nāgāḥ śuṇḍā-daṇḍair itas tataḥ

With the club Lord Balarāma killed Sṛṣṭi and Sunāma, with His arms He killed Nygrodha, and with His left hand He killed Kaṅka.

śaṅkuṁ suhuṁ tuṣṭimantaṁ vāma-pādena mādhavaḥ rāṣṭrapālaṁ dakṣiṇena pādenābhijaghāna ha

Translation

With His left foot Lord Kṛṣṇa killed Śaṅku, Suhu, and Tuṣṭimān, and with His right foot He killed Rāṣṭrapālaka.

aṣṭau nipetuḥ sahasā vṛkṣā vāta-hatā iva teṣāṁ jyotir bhagavati līnaṁ jātaṁ videha-rāṭ

Translation

The eight brothers quickly fell like tress struck by a great wind. O king of Videha, sparks of light left their corpses and merged in the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

brahmādyā munayaḥ siddhā vimānair draṣṭum āgatāḥ tuṣṭuvū rāma-kṛṣṇau tau vāgbhiḥ śruti-parāyaṇāḥ

Translation

The sages and perfect beings, headed by Brahmā and all learned in the Vedas, came to see. With eloquent words they offered prayers to Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma.

tāḍayantya uro hastair asti-prāpty-ādayaḥ striyaḥ vinirgatas ta rurudur

Synonyms

Translation

jāta-vaidhavya-duḥkhitāḥ Kaṁsa's wives, headed by Asti and Prāpti, beat their chests and wailed with grief.

striya ūcuḥ ha nātha he yuddha-pate kva gato 'si mahā-bala trailokya-vijayī sākṣād devānām api durjayaḥ

Thw wives said: O lord, O master of battle, O powerful one, where have you gone? You conquered the three worlds. Even the demigods could not defeat you.

jāta-mātraḥ svasuḥ putrā nirghṛṇena tvayā hatāḥ anirdaśā nirdaśaś cā- pare 'pi nihatā balāt

Synonyms

Translation

You mercilessly killed your sisters sons when they were ten days old. Some were not even ten days old. Some you killed the moment they were born.

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; evam thus ; aśru-mukhīḥ faces filled with tears ; dīnā pathetic ; āśvāsya comforting ; nṛpa-yoṣitaḥ the queens ; vidhāya placing ; yamunā-tīre on the Yamuna shore ; citāḥ a funeral pyre ; śrīkhaṇḍa-samyutāḥ made of sandal wood.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: After consoling the poor tear-faced queens, the Lord built a sandalwood funeral pyre on the Yamunā's shore.

hatānāṁ kārayitvāsau kriyāṁ vai para-laukikīm sarvān sambodhayām āsa bhagavāl loka-bhavanaḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Then Lord Kṛṣṇa, the master of the all the worlds, performed the funeral ceremony and recited the funeral mantras.
