Translation

tatraiva parvate kṛṣṇo nanāda muralī-kalam murcchitā vihvalā jātās tan-nādena vrajāṅganāḥ

Synonyms

Translation

On a hill there Lord Kṛṣṇa sweetly played the flute. That music made the girls of Vraja faint.

Verse text

manoja-bāṇa-bhinnāṅgāḥ ślathan-nīvyaḥ suraiḥ saha kaśmalaṁ prāyayu rājan vimāneṣv amarāṅganāḥ

Synonyms

Translation

O king, wounded by Kāmadeva's arrows, and their tight belts now loosened, the demigoddesses also fainted because of that music as they flew in airplanes with the demigods.

catur-vidhā jīva-saṅghāḥ sthavarair moham āsthitāḥ nadyo nadāḥ sthirī-bhūtāḥ parvatā dravatāṁ gatāḥ

Synonyms

catuḥ four ; vidhāḥ kinds ; jīva-saṅghāḥ living entities ; sthavaraiḥ with immobile living entities ; moham fainting ; āsthitāḥ attained ; nadyaḥ the rivers ; nadāḥ streams ; sthirī-bhūtāḥ stunned ; parvatā the hills ; dravatām melting ; gatāḥ attained.

Translation

Because of that music the four kinds of moving and unmoving living entities fainted, the rivers and streams became stunned, and the hills and mountains melted.

tat-pāda-cihna-samyukto giriḥ kāmavane 'bhavat tasya darśana-mātreṇa naro yāti kṛtārthatām

Synonyms

tat-pāda-cihna-samyuktaḥ endowed with His footprints ; giriḥ the hill ; kāmavane in Kāmavana forest ; abhavat became ; tasya of Him ; darśana-mātreṇa simply by the sight ; naraḥ a person ; yāti goes ; kṛtārthatām to success.

Translation

That hill in Kāmavana became decorated with Lord Kṛṣṇa's footprints. Simply by seeing that hill one attains the goal of life.

atha gopī-gaṇaiḥ sākaṁ śrī-kṛṣṇo rādhikā-patiḥ nandīśvara-bṛhat-sānu- taṭe rāsaṁ cakāra ha

Translation

Then Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Lord of Rādhā, enjoyed a rāsa dance with the gopīs on the great peak of Nandīśvara Hill.

tatra gopyo 'ti-māninyo babhūvur maithileśvara tās tyaktvā rādhayā sārdhaṁ tatraivāntardadhe hariḥ

Synonyms

Translation

O king of Mithilā, at that time the gopīs became very proud, so Lord Kṛṣṇa left them. He disappeared with Rādhā.

gopyaś ca sarvā virahāturā bhṛśāṁ kṛṣṇaṁ vinā maithila nirjane vane tā babhramuś cāśru-kulākulākṣyo yathā hariṇyaś cakitā itas tataḥ

Translation

O king of Mithilā, separated from Kṛṣṇa, the gopīs were overcome with sorrow. Their eyes filled with tears, they wandered here and there in the forest wilderness as if they were frightened deer.

kṛṣṇaṁ hy apaśyantya iti vyathāṁ gatā yathā kariṇyaḥ kariṇaṁ vane vane yathā kuraryaḥ kuraraṁ vrajāṅganāḥ sarvā rudantyo virahāturā bhṛśām

Synonyms

Translation

Not seeing Kṛṣṇa anywhere, they became filled with sorrow. They became like female elephants that cannot find their mate or kurarī birds that cannot find their husband. Separated from Kṛṣṇa, all the girls of Vraja wept.

unmattavad vṛkṣa-latā-kadambakaṁ sarvā militvā ca pṛthag vane vane papracchur ārān nṛpa nanda-nandanaṁ kutra sthitaṁ taṁ vadatāśu bhūruhāḥ

Translation

O king, in forest after forest they approached the trees and vines and asked, as if they had become mad, "Where is the son of Nanda? O trees and plants, please tell us."

śrī-kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇeti girā vadantyaḥ śrī-kṛṣṇa-pādāmbuja-lagna-mānasāḥ śrī-kṛṣṇa-rūpās tu babhūvur aṅganās citraṁ na peśas-kṛtam etya kīṭa-vat

Synonyms

Translation

The girls called out, "O Śrī Kṛṣṇa! O Kṛṣṇa!" their hearts paasionately attached to Śrī Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet. Then they pretended to have become Kṛṣṇa. This is not surprising. They were like bumblebees attracted to Śrī Kṛṣṇa's glory.

śrī-pādukādhaḥ-sthala-gopī-gopyaḥ śrī-pādukābjaṁ śaraṇaṁ prāpannāḥ

Synonyms

śrī-pāduka the feet ; adhaḥ below ; sthala place ; gopi-gopyaḥ gopīs ; śrī-pādukābjam to the lotus feet ; śaraṇam surrender ; prāpannāḥ attained.

Translation

Approaching Kṛṣṇa's footprints on the ground, the gopīs surrendered to His lotus feet.

Verse text

tatas tu tat-prasādena tat-padārcana-darśanāt dadṛśur gāṁ tadā gopyo bhagavat-pāda-cihnitām

Synonyms

tataḥ then ; tu indeed ; tat-prasādena by His mercy ; tat His ; pada feet ; arcana worship ; darśanāt because of seeing ; dadṛśuḥ saw ; gām the earth ; tadā then ; gopyaḥ the gopīs ; bhagavat-pāda-cihnitām marked with the footprints of the Lord.

Translation

When He saw them worship His feet, the Lord became merciful. For this reason the gopīs were able to see a place marked with the Lord's footprints.

śrī-bahulāśva uvāca rādheśo rādhayā sārdhaṁ hitvā gopīr yayau kva bhoḥ tad-darśanaṁ kathaṁ jātaṁ gopīnāṁ vada me prabho

Synonyms

Translation

Śrī Bahulāśva said: When He left the gopīs, where did Kṛṣṇa take Rādhā? How did the gopīs again see Kṛṣṇa? O lord, please tell me.

śrī-nārada uvāca śrī-kṛṣṇo rādhayā sārdhaṁ saṅketa-vaṭam āviśat priyāyāḥ kabarī-puṣpa- racanaṁ sa cakāra ha

Synonyms

śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ Śrī Kṛṣṇa ; rādhayā Rādhā ; sārdham with ; saṅketa-vaṭam a banyan-forest rendezvous ; āviśat entered ; priyāyāḥ of His beloved ; kabarī-puṣpa kabari flowers ; racanam making ; sa He ; cakāra did ; ha indeed.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Kṛṣṇa and Rādhā entered a banyan forest. There Kṛṣṇa decorated His beloved with kabarī flowers.

śrī-kṛṣṇa-kuntale nīle vakratvaṁ rādhikākarot citra-patrāvalīḥ kṛṣṇa- pūrṇendu-mukha-maṇḍale

Translation

There Rādhā made curls on Kṛṣṇa's black hair and wonderful pictures and designs on the circle of His full-moon face.

evaṁ kṛṣṇo bhadravanaṁ khadirāṇāṁ vanaṁ mahat bilvānāṁ ca vanaṁ paśyan kokilākhyaṁ vanaṁ gataḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Then, gazing at the great forests Bhadravana, Khadiravana, and Bilvavana as He went, Kṛṣṇa entered the forest named Kokilavana.

gopyaḥ kṛṣṇaṁ vicinvantyo dadṛśus tat-padāni ca yava-cakra-dhvaja-cchatraiḥ svastikāṅkuśa-bindubhiḥ

tad-rajaḥ satataṁ nītvā dhṛtvā mūrdhni vrājāṅganāḥ padāny anyāni dadṛśur anya-cihnānvitāni ca

lavāṅga-latikābhiḥ clove ives ; ca and ; vicitrāṇi wonderful ; videha-rāṭ O king of Videha ; gadā club ; pāṭhīna fish ; śaṅkhaiḥ conch ; ca and ; giri-rājena the king of mountains ; śaktibhiḥ sakti weapon.

Translation

. . . many clove vines, a club, fish, conchshell, mountain-king, many śakti-weapons, . . .

siṁhāsana-rathābhyāṁ ca bindu-dvaya-yutāni ca vīkṣya prāhū rādhikayā gato 'sau nanda-nandanaḥ

Translation

. . . throne, chariot, and two bindus. O king, looking at these wonderful footprints, the gopīs said, "The son of Nanda has come here in Rādhā's company."

paśyantyas tat-pāda-padmaṁ kokilākhyaṁ vanaṁ gatāḥ gopī-kolāhalaṁ śrutvā rādhikāṁ prāha mādhavaḥ

Translation

The gopīs followed these lotus footprints into Kokilavana forest. When He heard the tumultous sounds of the gopīs as they came, Kṛṣṇa said to Rādhā:

koṭi-candra-pratīkāśe rādhe sarpa tvaraṁ priye āgatā gopikāḥ sarvās tvāṁ neṣyanti hi sarvataḥ

Synonyms

koṭi millions ; candra of moons ; pratīkāśe glory ; rādhe O Rādhā ; sarpa go ; tvaram quickly ; priye O beloved ; āgatā come ; gopikāḥ the gopīs ; sarvāḥ all ; tvām You ; neṣyanti will lead ; hi indeed ; sarvataḥ in all respects.

Translation

O Rādhā, O beloved, O girl splendid as ten million moons, go quickly, All these gopīs have come to take You from Me.

tadā mānavatī rādhā bhūtvā prāha ramā-patim rūpa-yauvana-kauśalya- śīla-garva-samanvitā

Translation

Then Rādhā, feeling proud of Her beauty, youthfulness, intelligence, and good character, spoke to Lord Kṛṣṇa, the husband of the goddess of fortune.

śrī-rādhovāca calituṁ na samarthāhaṁ mandirān na vinirgatā sukumārī sveda-yuktā kathaṁ māṁ nayasi priya

śrī-rādhā uvāca Śrī Rādhā said ; calitum to move ; na not ; samarthā able ; aham I am ; mandirān from the palace ; na not ; vinirgatā come ; sukumārī delicate ; sveda-yuktā perspiring ; katham how? ; mām Me ; nayasi You will lead ; priya O beloved.

Translation

I cannot move. I cannot leave this palace. I am only a delicate girl. I am perspiring. O beloved, how can You lead Me away from here?

śrī-nārada uvāca iti vākyaṁ tataḥ śrutvā śrī-kṛṣṇo rādhikeśvaraḥ pītāmbareṇa divyena vāyuṁ tasyai cakāra ha

Translation

Hearing these words, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the master of Rādhā, made for Her a breeze by fanning Her with His yellow garments.

hastaṁ gṛhītvā tām āha gaccha rādhe yathā-sukham kṛṣṇenāpi tadā proktā na yayau tena vai punaḥ

Translation

Then Kṛṣṇa took Her hand and said, "O Rādhā, walk as fast You like." Even though Kṛṣṇa said this, still Rādhā did not move.

pṛṣṭhaṁ dattvātha haraye tūṣṇīm-bhūtā sthitā punaḥ priyāṁ mānavatīṁ rādhāṁ prāha kṛṣṇaṁ satāṁ priyaḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Turning Her back to Kṛṣṇa, Rādhā stood silent. Then Kṛṣṇa, who is dear to the saintly devotees, spoke to His proud beloved Rādhā.

śrī-bhagavān uvāca vihāya gopīr iha kāmayānā bhajāmy ahaṁ mānini cetasā tvam yat te priyaṁ tat prakaromi rādhe me skandham āruhya sukhaṁ vrajāśu

Translation

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Let us leave behind these gopīs that wish to come with Us. O noble girl, I worship You with all My heart. O Rādhā, I will do whatever You wish. Climb on My shoulders and You will quickly and easily flee from them.

śrī-nārada uvāca evaṁ priyāṁ priyatamaḥ skandha-yānepsitāṁ nṛpa vihāyāntardadhe kṛṣṇo svacchanda-gatir īśvaraḥ

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: O king, as Rādhā was about to climb His shoulders, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the supremely independent Personality of Godhead suddenly disappeared.

gata-mānā kīrti-sutā bhagavad-virahāturā uccai ruroda rājendra kokilākhye vane pare

Synonyms

Translation

Distressed by Kṛṣṇa's departure, and Her pride now gone, Rādhā loudly wept in Kokilavana forest.

tadaiva yūthā samprāptā gopīnāṁ maithileśvarā tad-rodanaṁ duḥkhataraṁ śrutvā jagmus tapāturāḥ

O king of Mithilā, when the gopīs came and heard Rādhā's sorrowful weeping they also became filled with sorrow.

kāścit taṁ makarandaiś ca snāpayāṁ cakrur īśvarīm candanāguru-kastūrī- kuṅkuma-drava-sīkaraiḥ

Translation

Some gopīs showered Her with a spray of honey, sandal, aguru, musk, and saffron.

vāyuṁ cakrus tad-aṅgeṣu vyajanāndola-cāmaraiḥ āśvāsya vāgbhiḥ paramaṁ nānānunaya-kovidaiḥ

Translation

Some made a breeze on Her limbs by fanning Her with fans and cāmaras, and some, expert at comforting others, comforted Her with many words.

tan-mukhān mānino mānaṁ śrutvā kṛṣṇasya gopikāḥ mānavantyo maithilendra vismayaṁ paramaṁ yayuḥ
