Chapter Thirteen Pūtanā-mokṣa The Liberation of Pūtanā

śrī-nārada uvāca śaury-anāmaya-pṛcchārthaṁ karaṁ dātuṁ nṛpasya ca putrotsavaṁ kathayituṁ nande śrī-mathuraṁ gate

Translation

kaṁsena preṣitā duṣṭā pūtanā ghāta-kāriṇī pureṣu grāma-ghoṣeṣu carantī gharghara-svanā śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; śauri—of Vasudeva; anāmaya—the welfare; pṛcchā—question; artham—for the purpose; karam—tax; dātum—to give; nṛpasya—to the king; ca—also; putra—of his son; utsavam—the festival; kathayitum—to describe; nande—when Nanda; śrī-mathuram—to Śrī Mathurā; gate—went; kaṁsena—by Kaṁsa; preṣitā—sent; duṣṭā—demon; pūtanā—Pūtanā; ghāta-kāriṇī—murderess; pureṣu in cities; grāma—towns; ghoṣeṣu—and cowherd villages; carantī—going; gharghara-svanā—making a rumbling sound. While, to ask about Vasudeva's welfare, to pay his tax to the king, and to describe his son's birth-festival, Nanda was in Śrī Mathurā, the murderess Pūtanā, sent by Kaṁsa, was traveling among cities, towns, and cowherd villages, making a menacing rumbling sound.

Translation

atha gokulam āsādya gopa-gopī-gaṇākulam rūpaṁ dadhāra sā divyaṁ vapuḥ ṣoḍaśa-varṣikam

Synonyms

Translation

Coming to Gokula, which was filled with many gopas and gopīs, the demoness assumed the form of a splendid sixteen-year old girl.

na ke 'pi rurudhur gopāḥ sundarīṁ tāṁ ca gopikāḥ śacīṁ vāṇīṁ ramāṁ rambhāṁ ratiṁ ca kṣipatīm iva

Synonyms

Translation

No gopa or gopī stopped this beautiful girl, who seemed to eclipse the goddesses Śacī, Sarasvatī, Lakṣmī, Rambhā, and Rati.

rohiṇyāṁ ca yaśodāyāṁ dharṣitāyāṁ sphurat-kucā aṅkam ādāya taṁ bālaṁ lālayantī punaḥ punaḥ

Synonyms

rohiṇyām when Rohiṇī ; ca also ; yaśodāyām Yaśodā ; dharṣitāyām were arrogantly ignored ; sphurat manifest ; kucā breasts ; aṅkam on her lap ; ādāya taking ; tam Him ; bālam the infant ; lālayantī fondling ; punaḥ punaḥ again and again.

Translation

Ignoring Rohiṇī and Yaśodā, she took the infant on her lap, fondled Him again and again, and then exposed her breasts.

dadau śiśor mahā-ghorā kālākūtāvṛtaṁ stanam prāṇaiḥ sārdhaṁ papau dugdhaṁ kaṭuṁ roṣāvṛto hariḥ

Synonyms

dadau placed ; śiśoḥ of the infant ; mahā very ; ghorā terrible ; kālākūta with poison ; āvṛtam covered ; stanam breast ; prāṇaiḥ life breath ; sārdham with ; papau drank ; dugdham milk ; kaṭum bitter ; roṣa with anger ; āvṛtaḥ filled ; hariḥ Lord Hari.

Translation

When the very horrible demoness gave her poison-covered breast to Him, infant Lord Hari became angry and drank her life-breath along with the bitter milk.

muṣca muṣca vadantītthaṁ dhavantī piḍita-stanā nītvā bahir gatā taṁ vai gata-māyā babhūva ha

Synonyms

Translation

Screaming "Leave me! Leave me!", and her breast filled with pain, she ran outside, bringing the infant with her and her magical illusion now gone.

patan-netrā śveta-gātrā rudantī patitā bhuvi nanāda tena brahmāṇḍaṁ sapta lokair bilaiḥ saha

Translation

Screaming, her eyes bulging and limbs perspiring, she fell to the ground, making a sound that filled the universe with its seven planetary systems and empty regions of outer space.

cacāla vasudhā dvīpais tad adbhutam ivābhavat ṣaṭ-krośaṁ sā dṛḍhān dīrghān vṛkṣān pṛṣṭha-tale gatān

Translation

cūrṇī-cakāra vapuṣā vajrāagena nṛpeśvara vadantas te gopa-gaṇā vīkṣya ghoraṁ vapur mahat cacāla—moved; vasudhā—the earth; dvīpaiḥ—with its continents; tat—that; adbhutam—a wonder; iva—like; abhavat—was; ṣaṭ-krośam—twelve miles; sā—she; dṛḍhān—hard; dīrghān—tall; vṛkṣān—trees; pṛṣṭha-tale—to the ground; gatān—went; cūrṇī-cakāra—broke into pieces; vapuṣā—with the body; vajrāagena—lightning bolt; nṛpeśvara—O king of kings; vadantaḥ—saying; te—they; gopa-gaṇāḥ—the gopas; vīkṣya—seeing; ghoram—horrible; vapuḥ—form; mahat—great. Then, seeing the smiling infant yawn after drinking the demoness' milk, and then play on her breast, the astonished women, along with Yaśodā and Rohiṇia, grabbed Him, and pulled Him down from the breast.

sarvato bālakaṁ nītvā rakṣāṁ cakrur vidhānataḥ kālindī-puṇya-mṛt-toyair go-puccha-bhramaṇādibhiḥ

Synonyms

sarvataḥ completely ; bālakam the infant ; nītvā taking ; rakṣām protection ; cakruḥ did ; vidhānataḥ properly ; kālindī of the Yamunā ; puṇya sacred ; mṛt with mud ; toyaiḥ and water ; gaḥ of the cows ; puccha tails ; bhramaṇa with the movements ; ādibhiḥ beginning.

Translation

Then they took the child and acted to give Him protection by anointing Him with the Yamunā's sacred water and clay, by having a cow wave its tail before Him, and by doing other things also.

go-mūtra-go-rajobhiś ca snāpayitvā tv idaṁ jaguḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Bathing Him with cow dust and cow urine, they chanted:

śrī-gopya ūcuḥ śrī-kṛṣṇas te śiraḥ pātu vaikuṇṭhaḥ kaṇṭham eva hi śvetadvīpa-patiḥ karṇau nāsikaṁ yajṣa-rūpa-dhṛk

Translation

The gopīs said: May Śrī Kṛṣṇa protect Your head. May Lord Vaikuṇṭha protect Your neck. May the Lord of Śvetadvīpa protect Your ears. May Lord Yajṣa protect Your nose.

nṛsiṁho netra-yugmaṁ ca jihvāṁ daśarathātmajaḥ adharāv avatāṁ te tu nara-nārāyanāv ṛṣī

kapolau pāntu te sākṣāt sanakādyāḥ kalā hareḥ bhalaṁ te sveta-vārāho nārado bhrū-late 'vatu

Translation

May the four Kumāras. who are Lord Hari's kalā expansions, protect Your cheeks. May Lord Śveta Varāha protect Your forehead. May Lord Nārada protect the two vines of Your eyebrows.

cibukaṁ kapilaḥ pātu dattātreya uro 'vatu skandhau dvāv ṛṣabhaḥ pātu karau matsyaḥ prapātu te

dor-daṇḍaṁ satataṁ rakṣet pṛthuḥ pṛthula-vikramaḥ udaraṁ kamaṭhaḥ pātu nābhiṁ dhanvantariś ca te

mohinī guhya-deśaṁ ca kaṭiṁ te vāmano 'vatu pṛṣṭhaṁ paraśurāmaś ca tavorū bādarāyaṇaḥ

Synonyms

Translation

May Śrīmatī Mohinī protect Your private parts. My Lord Vāmana protect Your hips. May Lord Paraśurāma protect Your back. May Lord Vyāsa protect Your thighs.

balo jānu-dvayaṁ pātu jaṅghe buddhaḥ prapātu te padau pātu sa-gulphau ca kalkir dharma-patiḥ prabhuḥ

Synonyms

Translation

May Lord Balarāma protect Your knees. May Lord Buddha protect Your shins. May Lord Kalki, the master of religion, protect Your ankles and feet.

sarva-rakṣā-karaṁ divyaṁ śrī-kṛṣṇa-kavacaṁ param idaṁ bhagavatā dattaṁ brahmaṇe nābhi-paṅkaje

Synonyms

sarva-rakṣā-karam all protection ; divyam glorious ; śrī-kṛṣṇa of Śrī Kṛṣṇa ; kavacam the armor ; param great ; idam this ; bhagavatā by the Lord ; dattam given ; brahmaṇe to Brahmā ; nābhi navel ; paṅkaje on the lotus.

Translation

The Supreme Personality of Godhead gave this glorious and transcendental Śrī Kṛṣṇa-kavaca (armor of Lord Kṛṣṇa), which gives all protection, to the demigod Brahmā on the lotus flower of His navel.

brahmaṇā śambhave dattaṁ śambhur durvāsase dadau durvāsāḥ śrī-yaśomatyai prādāc chrī-nanda-mandire

Synonyms

brahmaṇā by Brahmā ; śambhave to Lord Śiva ; dattam givem ; śambhuḥ Lord Śiva ; durvāsase to Durvāsā ; dadau gave ; durvāsāḥ Durvāsā ; śrī-yaśomatyai to Śrī Yaśodā ; prādāt gave ; śrī-nanda of Śrī Nanda ; mandire in the palace.

Translation

Then Brahmā gave it to Lord Śiva. Lord Śiva gave it to Durvāsā Muni. Durvāsā Muni gave it to Śrī Yaśodā in Śrī Nanda's palace.

anena rakṣāṁ kṛtvāsya gopībhiḥ śrī-yaśomatī pāyayitvā stanaṁ dānaṁ viprebhyaḥ pradadau mahat

Synonyms

Translation

In this way Śrī Yaśodā and the gopīs gave protection to (infant Kṛṣṇa). Then Śrī Yaśodā gave Him her breast milk to drink, and then she gave great charity to the brāhmaṇas.

tadā nandādayo gopā āgatā mathurā-purāt dṛṣṭvā ghoraṁ pūtanākhyaṁ babhūvur bhaya-vihvalāḥ

Synonyms

tadā then ; nanda-ādayaḥ headed by Nanda ; gopāḥ the gopas ; āgatāḥ arrived ; mathurā-purāt from the city of Mathurā ; dṛṣṭvā seeing ; ghoram horror ; pūtanā-ākhyam named Pūtanā ; babhūvuḥ became ; bhaya with fear ; vihvalāḥ overwhelmed.

Translation

When, just returned from Mathurā City, the gopas headed by Nanda saw horrible Pūtanā, they were overcome with fear.

chitvā kuṭhārais tad-dehaṁ gopāḥ śrī-yamunā-taṭe anekāś ca citāḥ kṛtvā dahayām āsur eva tam

Translation

Cutting it up with axes, and making many pyres by Śrī Yamunā's shore, the gopas burned her body.

elā-lavaṅga-śrīkhaṇḍa- tagarāguru-gandhi-bhṛt dhūmo dagdhasya dehasya pavitrasya samutthitaḥ

Synonyms

elā-lavaṅga-śrīkhaṇḍa of elā, lavaṅga, and śrīkhaṇḍa ; tagara of tagara ; āguru and of aguru ; gandhi the scent ; bhṛt manifesting ; dhūmaḥ smoke ; dagdhasya of the burned ; dehasya body ; pavitrasya purified ; samutthitaḥ risen.

Translation

The smoke that rose from her now purified burning body was fragrant as elā, lavaṅga, śrīkhaṇḍa, tagra, and aguru.

aho kṛṣṇam ṛte kaṁ vā vrajāma śaraṇaṁ tv iha pūtanāyai mokṣa-gatiṁ dadau patita-pāvanaḥ

Synonyms

ahaḥ oh ; kṛṣṇam for Kṛṣṇa ; ṛte except ; kam to whom? ; or ; vrajāma we go ; śaraṇam shelter ; tu certainly ; iha here ; pūtanāyai to Pūtanā ; mokṣa-gatim the destination of liberation ; dadau gave ; patita of the fallen ; pāvanaḥ the purifier.

Translation

Of whom else but Kṛṣṇa will we take shelter? The purifier of the fallen, He gave liberation to Pūtanā.

śrī-bahulāśva uvāca keyaṁ vā rakṣasī pūrvaṁ pūtanā bāla-ghātinī viṣa-stanā duṣṭa-bhāvā paraṁ mokṣaṁ kathaṁ gatā

Synonyms

śrī-bahulāśvaḥ uvāca Śrī Bahulāśva said ; who? ; iyam she ; or ; rakṣasī the demoness ; pūrvam before ; pūtanā Pūtanā ; bāla of children ; ghātinī the murderess ; viṣa poison ; stanā breast ; duṣṭa-bhāvā wicked ; param ultimate ; mokṣam libreation ; katham how? ; gatā attained.

Translation

Śrī Bahulāśva said: Who was this demoness in her previous birth? Why did evil Pūtanā, who murdered children by giving them her poisoned breast, attain ultimate liberation?

śrī-nārada uvāca bali-yajṣe vāmanasya dṛṣṭvā rūpam ataḥ param bali-kanyā ratnamālā putra-snehaṁ cakāra ha

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; bali of Bali Mahārāja ; yajṣe in the sacrifice ; vāmanasya of Lord Vāmana ; dṛṣṭvā seeing ; rūpam the form ; ataḥ param then ; bali of Bali ; kanyā the daughter ; ratnamālā Ratnamālā ; putra to a son ; sneham affection ; cakāra ha did.

Translation

Seeing the form of Lord Vāmana in Bali Mahāraja's yajṣa, Bali's daughter Ratnamālā felt for the Lord (a mother's) love for her son.

etādṛśo yadi bhaved bālas taṁ hi śuci-smitam pāyayāmi stanaṁ tena prasannaṁ me manas tadā

(She thought:) If I had a son like Him, then I would give that gloriously smiling son the milk from my breast to drink. In that way my heart would become happy.

baleḥ parama-bhaktasya sutāyai vāmano hariḥ manorathas tu te bhuyān manasy api varaṁ dadau

Translation

"may your desire be fulfilled." In this way the Personality of Godhead, Lord Vāmana, gave a blessing in his heart to the daughter of His great devotee Bali Mahārāja.

sābhavad dvāparānte vai pūtanā nāma viśrutā śrī-kṛṣṇa-sparśa-sambhūtā paraṁ prāpta-manorathā

Synonyms

she ; abhavat became ; dvāpara-ante at the end of Dvāpara-yuga ; vai indeed ; pūtanā Pūtanā ; nāma named ; viśrutā famous ; śrī-kṛṣṇa of Śrī Kṛṣṇa ; sparśa by the touch ; sambhūtā manifested ; param then ; prāpta attained ; manorathā desire.

Translation

At the end of Dvāpara-yuga she became known as Pūtanā. Then, by Lord Kṛṣṇa's touch, she attained her desire.

yaḥ pūtanā-mokṣam imaṁ śṛṇoti kṛṣṇasya devasya parāt parasya bhaktir bhavet prema-yutāpi tasya tri-varga-śuddhiḥ kim u maithilendra

Translation

O king of Mithilā, a person who hears of Pūtanā's liberation will become purified of the three material desires and will attain pure love and devotion for Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is greater than the greatest.
