paripūrṇatamaḥ sākṣāc chrī-kṛṣṇo bhagavān svayam viveśa vasudevasya manaḥ pūrvaṁ parāt paraḥ

Translation

Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is greater than the greatest, personally entered Vasudeva's heart.

suryendu-vahni-saṅkāśo vasudevo mahā-manāḥ babhūvātyanta-mahasā sākṣād yajṣa ivāparaḥ

Synonyms

Translation

The great soul Vasudeva shone with a glory like the sun, moon, and fire. He was like a double of the Supreme Lord, the master of all sacrifices.

devakyām āgate kṛṣṇe sarveṣām abhayaṅkare rarāja tena sā gehe ghane saudaminī yathā

Synonyms

Translation

When Lord Kṛṣṇa, who gives fearlessness to everyone, entered Devakī, she shone as if a great lightning flash had entered her home.

tejovatīṁ ca tāṁ vīkṣya kaṁsaḥ prāha bhayāturaḥ prāpto 'yaṁ prāṇa-hantā me pūrvam eṣā na cedṛśī

Translation

Seeing her so effulgent, Kaṁsa became frightened. He said, "Now the destroyer of my life has come. She was not like this before.

jāta-mātraṁ haniṣyāmīty uktvāste bhaya-vihvalaḥ paśyan sarvatra ca hariṁ pūrva-śatruṁ vicintayan

Translation

"As soon as He is born I will kill Him." Saying this, looking in all directions, and thinking of his former enemy Lord Hari, he became filled with fear.

aho vairānubandhena sākṣāt kṛṣṇo 'pi dṛśyate tasmād vairaṁ prakurvanti kṛṣṇa-prāpty-ārtham āsurāḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Even by hating Him one is able to see Kṛṣṇa. For this reason, in order to attain the association of Lord Kṛṣṇa, the demons hate Him.

atha brahmādayo devā munīndrair asmad-ādibhiḥ śauri-gehopari prāptāḥ stavaṁ cakruḥ praṇamya tam

Synonyms

Translation

Then the demigods headed by Brahmā and the great sages headed by me went to Vasudeva's home, bowed down before Lord Kṛṣṇa, and offered many prayers.

śrī-devā ūcuḥ yaj-jāgarādiṣu bhaveṣu paraṁ hy ahetur hetuḥ svid asya vicaranti guṇāśrayena naitad viśanti mahad-indriya-deva-saṅghās tasmai namo 'gnim iva vistṛta-visphuliṅgāḥ

Synonyms

Translation

The demigods said: Taking shelter of the modes of nature, the philosophers wonder, "Is the Supreme the origin of consciousness and other states of being, or is not their origin?" As sparks come from a fire (but do not enter it), so the mahat-tattva, senses, and demigods (come from Him but) do not enter Him. Obeisances to Him, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

naiveṣituṁ prabhur ayaṁ balināṁ balīyān māyā na śabda uta no viṣayī-karoti tad brahma pūrṇam amṛtaṁ paramaṁ praśāntaṁ śuddhaṁ parāt parataraṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ smaḥ

Translation

The strongest of the strong cannot conquer Him. The potency of illusion cannot conquer Him. The Vedas cannot bring Him within their realm of perception. Of Him, the perfect, complete, eternal, peaceful, and pure Supreme Personality of Godhead, we take shelter.

aṁśāṁśakāṁśaka-kalādy-avatāra-vṛndāir āveśa-pūrṇa-sahitaiś ca parasya yasya sargādayaḥ kila bhavanti tam eva kṛṣṇaṁ pūrṇat paraṁ tu paripūrṇatamaṁ natāḥ smaḥ

Translation

With His aṁśa-avatāra, aṁśāṁśa-avatāra, kalā-avatāra, āveśa-avatāra, pūrṇa-avatāra, and many other avatāras, He creates (maintains, and destroys the material universes). To Him, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is greater than the pūrṇa-avatāra, we offer our respectful obeisances.

manvantareṣu ca yugeṣu gatāgateṣu kalpeṣu cāṁśa-kalayā sva-vapur bibharṣi adyaiva dhāma paripūrṇatamaṁ tanoṣi dharmaṁ vidhāya bhuvi maṅgalam ātanoṣi

Synonyms

Translation

In manvantaras, yugas, and kalpas past and future You manifest Your own form in partial incarnations, but now You manifest Your original and most perfect form. Establishing the real religion, You bring auspiciousness to the earth.

yad durlabhaṁ viśada-yogibhir apy agamyaṁ gamyaṁ dravadbhir amalāśaya-bhakti-yogaiḥ ānanda-kānda caratas tava manda-yānaṁ pādāravinda-makaranda-rajo dadhāmaḥ

Synonyms

Translation

O blissful Lord, we place (in our hearts) the nectar-pollen gently blowing from Your lotus feet as You walk, rare pollen not attained by even the purest yogīs but only by they whose pure hearts melt with love for You.

pūrvaṁ tathātra kamanīya-vapuṣmayaṁ tvāṁ kandarpa-koṭi-śata-mohanam adbhutaṁ ca goloka-dhāma-dhiṣaṇa-dyutim ādadhānaṁ rādhā-patiṁ dharaṇi-dhurya-dhanaṁ dadhāmaḥ

Translation

(In our hearts) we place wonderful You, whose handsome form is more charming than a hundred million Kāmadevas, who are the glory of the realm of Goloka, who are the master of Rādhā and the wealth of the earth.

śrī-nārada uvāca natvā hariṁ tadā devā brahmādyā munibhiḥ saha gāyantas taṁ praśaṁsantaḥ sva-dhāmāni yayur mudā śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; natvā—offering obeisances; harim—to Lord Hari; tadā—then; devāḥ—the demigods; brahma-ādyāḥ—headed by Brahmā; munibhiḥ—the sages; saha—with; gāyantaḥ—singing; tam—Him; praśaṁsantaḥ—praising; sva-dhāmāni—to their own abodes; yayuḥ—went; mudā—happily. Śrī Nārada said: Bowing down to Lord Hari and singing His praises, the demigods headed by Brahmā went with the sages to their own abodes.

atha maithila-rājendra janma-kāle hareḥ sati ambaraṁ nirmalaṁ bhūtaṁ nirmalāś ca diśo daśa

Synonyms

Translation

O great king of Mithilā, at the time of Lord Hari's birth the sky and the ten directions became very pure.

ujjvalās tārakā jātāḥ prasannaṁ bhūmi-maṇḍalam nadā nadyaḥ samudrāś ca prasannāpaḥ sarovarāḥ

Synonyms

Translation

The stars were bright, the earth happy, and the rivers, streams, oceans, and lakes filled with pure waters.

sahasra-dala-padmāni śata-patrāṇi sarvataḥ vicakāni marut-sparśaiḥ patad-gandhi-rajāṁsi ca

Synonyms

Translation

The breezes' touch spreading their fragrant pollen, thousand-petal hundred-leaf lotuses bloomed everywhere.

teṣu nedur madhukarā nadantaś citra-pakṣiṇaḥ śītalā manda-yānāś ca gandhāktā vayavo vavuḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Bees hummed, colorful birds sang, and fragrant cooling breezes gently blew.

ṛddhā janapadā grāmā nāgarā maṅgalāyanāḥ devā viprā nagā gāvo babhūvuḥ sukha-samvṛtāḥ

Synonyms

ṛddhāḥ wealthy ; janapadāḥ countries ; grāmāḥ villages ; nāgarāḥ towns ; maṅgalāyanāḥ auspicious ; devāḥ demigods ; viprāḥ brāhmaṇas ; nagāḥ trees ; gāvaḥ cows ; babhūvuḥ became ; sukha-samvṛtāḥ filled with happiness.

Translation

The countries became wealthy, the towns and villages auspicious, and the demigods, brāhmaṇas, trees, and cows happy.

deva-dundubhayo nedur jaya-dhvani-samākulāḥ yatra tatra mahā-rāja sarveṣāṁ maṅgalaṁ param

Synonyms

Translation

The drums of the demigods were filled with sounds of victory. Everywhere was great auspiciousness.

vidyādharāś ca gandharvāḥ siddha-kinnara-cāraṇāḥ jaguḥ sunāyakā devās tuṣṭuvuḥ stutibhiḥ param

Translation

Then, in the month of Bhādra (August-September), during the eighth tithi of the dark fortnight, when Mercury, Taurus, and the Rohiṇī star were on the horizon, and the planets were in harṣaṇa-yoga, in the middle of the night, when everything was covered with darkness and the moon was rising, in Vasudeva's palace Lord Hari appeared from Devakī as in a yajṣa fire appears from the araṇi wood.

sphurad-akṣa-vicitra-hāriṇaṁ vilasat-kaustubha-ratna-dhāriṇam paridhi-dyuti-nūpurāṅgadaṁ dhṛta-bālārka-kirīṭa-kuṇḍalam

O master of the worlds, please protect me from sinful Kaṁsa. Note: The "children" here are the Vaiṣṇavas.

Śrī Devakī said: O Kṛṣṇa, O master of countless universes, O Supreme Lord, O flag of Goloka-dhāma, O original Lord, O master of the perfect, O perfect one, O most perfect original Supreme Personality of Godhead, O Supreme Controller, please protect, please protect me from Kaṁsa's atrocities!

śrī-nārada uvāca tac chrutvā bhagavān kṛṣṇaḥ paripūrṇatamaḥ svayam sa-smito devakīṁ śauriṁ prāha sa vṛjinārdanaḥ śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; tat—that; śrutvā—hearing; bhagavān—Lord; kṛṣṇaḥ—Kṛṣṇa; paripūrṇatamaḥ svayam—the original Supreme Personality of Godhead; sa-smitaḥ—with a smile; devakīm—to Devakī; śaurim—and Vasudeva; prāha—said; saḥ—He; vṛjina-ardanaḥ—the destroyer of sins. Śrī Nārada said: Hearing this, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, the destroyer of sins, smiled and spoke to Vasudeva and Devakī.

śrī-bhagavān uvāca iyaṁ ca pṛśniḥ pati-devatā ca tvaṁ pūrva-sarge sutapā prajārthī brahmājṣayā divya-tapo yuvābhyāṁ kṛtaṁ paraṁ nirjala-bhojanābhyām śrī-bhagavān uvāca—the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; iyam—she; ca—also; pṛśniḥ—Pṛśni; pati-devatā—the chaste wife; ca—also; tvam—you; pūrva-sarge—in the previous creation; sutapāḥ—Sutapā; prajā-arthī—desiring children; brahma—of Brahmā; ajṣayā—by the order; divya—splendid; tapaḥ—austerity; yuvābhyām—by you both; kṛtam—was done; param—great; nirjala—without water; bhojanābhyām—or food. The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: In the previous creation she was chaste Pṛśni, who worshiped her husband as if he were a god, and you were Sutapā, who desired to create children. By Brahmā's order you both performed great and splendid austerities, fasting from food and drink.

kāleṣu manvantarake vyatīte tapaḥ paraṁ tat tapasaḥ prajārthi tadā prasanno yuvayor abhūvaṁ varaṁ paraṁ brūta mayā tadoktam

Translation

When in time the manvantara had passed, your austerity to attain children continued. Then I became pleased with you and I said, "Ask a benediction."

śrutvā yuvābhyāṁ kathitaṁ tadaiva bhūyas sutas tvat-sādṛśaḥ kilāvayoḥ tathāstu coktvātha gate mayi prajā- patī hy abhūta sva-kṛtena dam-patī

Hearing this, you both said, "May we have a son like You." I said, "So be it," and left. Then you became a prajāpati couple.

na mat-samaḥ ko 'pi suto jagaty alaṁ vicārya tad vām abhavaṁ pareśvaraḥ śrī-pṛśnigarbho bhuvi viśrutaḥ punar dvitīya-kāle 'ham upendra-vāmanaḥ

Translation

Thinking, "No one is like Me," I, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, became your son, famous in the world as Śrī Pṛśnigarbha. Then a second time I again became your son as Indra's younger brother Vāmana.

tathābhavaṁ hy adyatane parāt paro nītvātha māṁ prāpaya nanda-mandiram ato na bhūyād bhayam augrasenataḥ sutaṁ samādāya sukhī bhaviṣyathaḥ

Now I, the Supreme Lord, greater than the greatest, have again become your son. Take Me to Nanda's palace. Don't fear Kaṁsa. Take (Nanda's) daughter and you will become happy.

śrī-nārada uvāca tuṣṇīṁ bhūtvā haris tatra tad bhūyaḥ paśyatos tayoḥ dṛśyaṁ hy aprakaṭaṁ kṛtvā bālo 'bhūt kau yathā nataḥ śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; tuṣṇīm—silent; bhūtvā—becoming; hariḥ—Lord Hari; tatra—there; tat—that; bhūyaḥ—will be; paśyatoḥ—looking; tayoḥ—of them both; dṛśyam—visible; hi—indeed; aprakaṭam—unmanifest; kṛtvā—become; bālaḥ—a child; abhūt—became; kau—on the earth; yathā—as; naṭaḥ—an actor; Śrī Nārada said: Now silent, Lord Hari became invisible and, as an actor does, reappeared as an infant on the ground.

tayā śayāne viśvasmin rakṣakeṣu svapatsu ca dvārā udghaṭitāḥ sarvāḥ prasphuṭac-chrṅkhalārgalāḥ

Translation

Goddess Yogamyā put all the guards to sleep, unfastened the shackles and locks, and opened all the doors.

nirgate vasudeve ca mūrdhni śrī-kṛṣṇa-śobhite sūryodaye yathā sadyas tamo-nāśo 'bhavat svataḥ

Translation

When, his head decorated with Śrī Kṛṣṇa, Vasudeva left, the darkness became at once destroyed, as if the sun had suddenly risen.

ghaneṣu vyomni varṣatsu sahasra-vadanaḥ svarāṭ nivārayan dīrgha-phāṇair āsāraṁ śaurim anvagāt

Translation

As the clouds in the sky rained, thousant—headed Ananta Śeṣa, His great hoods giving protection from the torrents of rain, followed Vasudeva.

ūrmy-āvartākulāvegaiḥ siṁha-sarpādi-vāhinī sadyo mārgaṁ dadau tasmai kālindī saritāṁ varā

Translation

Filled with great waves and whirlpools and (its shores) filled with lions, snakes, and other wild creatures, the Yamunā, the best of rivers, gave a path to Vasudeva.

nanda-vrajaṁ sametyāsau prasuptaṁ sarvataḥ param śiśuṁ yāsodā-śayane nidhāyāśu dadarśa tām

Entering Nanda's Vraja, he placed the sleeping infant on Yaśodā's bed and glanced at Yogamāyā.

sutaṁ sutāṁ vā jātaṁ cā- jṣātvā gopī yaśomatī pariśrāntā sva-śayane suṣvāpānanda-nidrayā

atha bāla-dhvaniṁ śrutvā rakṣakāḥ samupasthitāḥ ūcuḥ kaṁsāya vīrāya gatvā tad-rāja-mandiram

Hearing the sounds of an infant, the guards went to the royal palace and told the warrior Kaṁsa.

Overcome with fear, Kaṁsa rushed to the maternity room. Weeping like the most wretched person, the chaste sister (Devakī) spoke to her brother (Kaṁsa).

śrī-devaky uvāca sutām ekaṁ dehi me tvaṁ putreṣu pramṛteṣu ca striyaṁ hantuṁ na yogyo 'si bhrātas tvaṁ dīna-vatsalaḥ śrī-devakī uvāca—Śrī Devakī said; sutām—daughter; ekām—one; dehi—give; me—to me; tvam—you; putreṣu—sons; pramṛteṣu—died; ca—and; striyam—a woman; hantum—to kill; na—not; yogyaḥ—is right; asi—you are; bhrātaḥ—O brother; tvam—you; dīna—to they who suffer; vatsalaḥ—kind. Śrī Devakī said: Now that my sons are dead, please give me this one daughter. O brother, it is not right for you to kill a girl. You are kind to they who are miserable.

te 'nujāhaṁ hata-sutā kārāgāre nipātitā dātum arhasi kalyāṇa kalyāṇīṁ tanujāṁ ca me

I am your younger sister. You killed my sons and threw me in a prison cell. O noble one, please give this beautiful daughter to me.

śrī-nārada uvāca aśru-mukhyā mohitayā samācchādyātmajaṁ bahu prārthito 'ṅkād vinirbhartsya tāṁ sa acicchide khalaḥ śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; aśru—tears; mukhyā—face; mohitayā—bewildered; samācchādya—covering; ātmajām—daughter; bahu—many times; prārthitaḥ—begged; aṅkāt—from the lap; vinirbhartsya—rebuking; tām—her; saḥ—he; ācicchide—attacked; khalaḥ—the demon. Śrī Nārada said: Bewildered, and her face covered with tears, Devakī pleased and tried to hold the child in her lap. The demon Kaṁsa rebuked her and grabbed the child.

kusaṅga-nitaraḥ pāpaḥ khalo yadu-kulādhamaḥ svasuḥ sutāṁ śilā-pṛṣṭhe gṛhītvāṅghryor nyapātayat

ku-saṅga-nitaraḥ whose friends were demons ; pāpaḥ sinful ; khalaḥ demon ; yadu-kulādhamaḥ the lowest of the Yādavas ; svasuḥ of his sister ; sutām the daughter ; śilā-pṛṣṭhe on a stole slab ; gṛhītva brabbing ; aṅghryoḥ by the feet ; nyapātayat threw.

Translation

Then the sinful demon Kaṁsa, the lowest of the Yādavas, his friends all demons, holding his sister's daughter by her feet, threw her against a stone slab.

kaṁsa-hastāt samutpatya tvaraṁ sā cāmbare gatā śata-patre rathe divye sahasra-haya-sevite

cāmarāndolite śubhre sthitādṛśyata divya-dṛk sāyudhāṣṭa-bhujā māyā pārṣadaiḥ parisevitā śata-sūrya-pratīkāśā kaṁsam āha ghana-svanā

He saw her standing on a splendid chariot with moving cāmaras. Then Goddess Yogamāyā, served by many attendants, her glorious form splendid as a hundred suns, her eight arms holding weapons, and her voice like thunder, spoke to Kaṁsa.

śrī-yogamāyovāca paripūrṇatamaḥ sākṣāc chrī-kṛṣṇo bhagavān svayam jātaḥ kva vā tu te hantā vṛthā dīnāṁ dunoṣi vai

śrī-yogamāyā uvāca Śrī Yogamāyā said ; paripūrṇatamaḥ sākṣāt the original Supreme Personality of Godhead ; śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ Śrī Kṛṣṇa bhagavān—Lord ; svayam personally ; jātaḥ born ; kva where? ; or ; tu indeed ; te of you ; hantā the killer ; vṛthā uselessly ; dīnām this poor girl ; dunoṣi you trouble ; vai certainly.

Translation

Śrī Yogamāyā said: Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, is already born. Where is He born? He will kill you. You torture this poor girl in vain.

śrī-nārada uvāca ity uktvā taṁ tato devī gatā vindhyācale girau yogamāyā bhagavatī bahu-nāmā babhūva ha śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; iti—thus; uktvā—speaking; tam—to him; tataḥ—then; devī—the goddess; gatā—went; vindhyācale—to the Vindhya Hills; girau—on a hill; yogamāyā—Yogamāyā; bhagavatī—goddess; bahu—many; nāmā—names; babhūva—became; ha—indeed. Śrī Nārada said: After saying this, the goddess went to the Vindhya hills. There goddess Yogamāyā assumed many names.

atha kaṁso vismito 'bhūc chrutvā mātā-vacaḥ param devakīṁ vasudevaṁ ca mocayām āsa bandhanāt

At this Kaṁsa became astonished. Listening to his mother's words, he released Vasudeva and Devakī from their bonds.

kaṁsa uvāca pāpo 'haṁ pāpa-karmāhaṁ khalo yadu-kulādhamaḥ yuṣmat-putra-prahantāraṁ kṣamadhvaṁ me kṛtaṁ bhuvi kaṁsaḥ uvāca—Kaṁsa said; pāpaḥ—sinful; aham—I am; pāpa—sinful; karmā—deeds; aham—I am; khalaḥ—a demon; yadu-kula—of the Yadu family; adhamaḥ—the lowest; yuṣmat—of you; putra—the sons; prahantāram—the killer; kṣamadhvam—please forgive; me—by me; kṛtam—done; bhuvi—in the world. Kaṁsa said: I am a sinner. I have done many sins. I am a demon. I am the lowest of the Yādavas. Please forgive what I have done in this world. (Please forgive) the killer of your sons.

he svasaḥ śṛnu me śaure manye kāla-kṛtaṁ tv idam yena niścalyamāno vā vāyuneva ghanāvaliḥ

Translation

O sister, hear me. O Vasudeva, I think this was all done by time, which, as the wind moves the clouds, moves what cannot be moved.

viśvasto 'haṁ deva-vākye devās te 'pi mṛṣā-giraḥ na jānāmi kva me śatrur jātaḥ kau kathito 'nayā

śrī-nārada uvāca itthaṁ kaṁsas tad-aṅghryoś ca patito 'śru-mukho rudan cakāra sevāṁ paramāṁ sauhṛdaṁ darśayaṁs tayoḥ śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; ittham—in this way; kaṁsaḥ—Kaṁsa; tad-aṅghryoḥ—at his feet; ca—also; patitaḥ—fallen; aśru—tears; mukhaḥ—face; rudan—weeping; cakāra—did; sevām—service; paramām—great; sauhṛdam—friendship; darśayaṁḥ—showing; tayoḥ—to them. Śrī Nārada said: Weeping, and his face covered with tears, Kaṁsa fell at their feet. He rendered great service to them and he showed friendship to them.

aho śrī-kṛṣṇacandrasya paripūrṇatama-prabhoḥ dāna-dakṣaiḥ kaṭākṣaiś ca kiṁ na syād bhūmi-maṇḍale

prātaḥ-kāle tadā kaṁsaḥ pralambādīn mahāsurān samāhūya khalas tebhyo 'vadad uktaṁ ca māyayā

Kaṁsa said: Yogamāyā said the person that will bring my end is already born on the earth. Therefore all of you please kill all infants, whether they are younger or older than ten days.

daityāḥ the demons ; ūcuḥ said ; sajjasya preparing ; dhanuṣaḥ bows ; yuddhe in the battle ; bhavatā by you ; dvandva-yodhinā in a duel ; tāṅkārena with the sound of the bow udgatāḥ—come ; devāḥ the demigods ; manyase you think ; taiḥ by them ; katham how? ; bhayam fear.

Translation

The demons said: When you ready your bow for a fight, the twang of its string makes the demigods flee. Why do you fear them?

go-vipra-sādhu-śrutayo devā dharmādayaḥ pare viṣṇoś ca tanavo hy eṣāṁ nāśe daitya-balaṁ smṛtam

Translation

The cows, brāhmaṇas, devotees, Vedas, demigods, and others headed by the principles of religion, are the limbs of Lord Viṣṇu. When they are destroyed, the power of the demons will be remembered.

jāto yadi mahā-viṣṇus te śatrur yo mahī-tale ayaṁ caitad vadhopāyo gavādīnāṁ vihiṁsanam

Translation

If your enemy Lord Mahā-Viṣṇu is indeed born on the earth then the way to kill Him is to attack the cows and these others.

śrī-nārada uvāca itthaṁ mahodbhaṭā duṣṭā daiteyāḥ kaṁsa-noditāḥ dudruvuḥ khaṁ gavādibhyo jaghnur jātāṁs ca bālakān śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca—Śrī Nārada said; ittham—thus; mahā—great; udbhaṭāḥ—powerful; duṣṭāḥ—wicked; daiteyāḥ—demons; kaṁsa—by Kaṁsa; noditāḥ—sent; dudruvuḥ—ran; kham—to the sky; gava—by the cows; ādibhyaḥ—headed; jaghnuḥ—killed; jātān—born; ca—also; bālakān—infants. Śrī Nārada said: Sent by Kaṁsa, these powerful and sinful demons flew in the sky. They killed many newborn infants and many cows and other pious beings.

ā-samudrād bhūmi-tale viśantaś ca gṛhe gṛhe kāma-rūpa-dhara-daityāś ceruḥ sarpa ivābhavan

Translation

From sea to sea traveling over the earth and entering house after house, these demons, who could assume any form they wished, moved about like so many snakes.

utpathā udbhaṭā daityās tatrāpi kaṁsa-noditāḥ kapiḥ surāpo 'li-hato bhūta-grasta ivābhavan

Translation

The great demons sent by Kaṁsa were far from the path (of religion). They were like a monkey, or a drunkard destroyed by drink, or a man possessed by a ghost.

vaideha maithila narendra upendra-bhakta dharmiṣṭha-mukhya sutapo janaka pratāpin etat satāṁ ca bhuvi helanam aṅga rājan sarvaṁ chinatti bahulāśva catuṣpadārthān

Translation

O king of Videha, O king of Mithilā, O lord of men, O devotee of Lord Upendra, O first of the pious, O austere one, O father, O powerful one, in this way (the demons) harassed the devotees on the earth. O pious king Bahulāśva, (the demons) broke apart the four goals of pious life.
