Chapter Nineteen Yamalārjuna-bhaṅga Breaking of the Two Arjuna Trees

Verse text

śrī-nārada uvāca ekadā gokule gopyo mamanthur dadhi sarvataḥ gṛhe gṛhe pragāyantyo gopāla-caritaṁ param

Synonyms

śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; ekadā one day ; gokule in Gokula ; gopyaḥ the gopīs ; mamanthuḥ churned ; dadhi yogurt ; sarvataḥ completely ; gṛhe gṛhe in home after home ; pragāyantyaḥ singing ; gopāla of Gopāla ; caritam the pastimes ; param *transcendental.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Churning yogurt in their Gokula homes, the gopīs sang of Lord Gopāla's transcendental pastimes,

yaśodāpi samutthāya prātaḥ śrī-nanda-mandire bhāṇḍe gavyaṁ vinikṣipya mamantha dadhi sundarī

Synonyms

Translation

Rising early in Nanda's palace, beautiful Yaśodā put yogurt in a jug and churned it.

maṣjīra-rāvaṁ saṅkurvan bālaḥ śrī-nanda-nandanaḥ nanarta navanītārthaṁ gavyādāna-kutūhalāt

Synonyms

maṣjīra of her anklets ; rāvam sound ; saṅkurvan making ; bālaḥ boy ; śrī-nanda-nandanaḥ Nanda's son ; nanarta danced ; navanīta butter ; artham for ; gavya milk products ; ādāna taking ; kutūhalāt *because of eagerness.

Translation

His anklets jingling, Nanda's son eagerly danced to get some butter.

Verse text

bāla-kelir babhau nṛtyan mātuḥ parśvam anubhraman sunādi-kiṅkinī-saṅgha- jhaṅkāraṁ kārayan muhuḥ

Synonyms

bāla child ; keliḥ pastimes ; babhau manifested ; nṛtyan dancing ; mātuḥ of His mother ; parśvam the side ; anubhraman following ; sunādi melodious ; kiṅkinī tinkling ornaments ; saṅgha multitude ; jhaṅkāram tinkling ; kārayan making ; muhuḥ *again and again.

Translation

Dancing, following His mother, and making His ornaments jingle sweetly, He played as a child.

haiyaṅgavīnaṁ satataṁ navīnaṁ yācan sa mātur madhuraṁ bruvan saḥ ādāya haste 'śmasutaṁ ruṣā su-dhīr bibheda kṛṣṇo dadhi-mantha-pātram

Synonyms

Translation

After again and again begging His mother for some fresh butter, intelligent Kṛṣṇa finally took an emerald in His hand and angrily broke the yogurt-churn.

palāyamānaṁ sva-sutaṁ yaśodā prabhāvatī prāpa na hasta-mātrāt yogīśvarāṇām api yo durāpaḥ kathaṁ sā mātur grahaṇe prayāti

Synonyms

Translation

Beautiful Yaśodā could not catch her fleeing son, for He was always a hand's length away. Even the kings of the yogīs cannot attain Him. Why should He fall in His mother's grip?

tathāpi bhakteṣu ca bhakta-vaśyatā pradarśitā śrī-hariṇā nṛpeśvara bālaṁ gṛhītvā sva-sutaṁ yaśomatī babandha rajjvātha ruṣā hy ulūkhale

Synonyms

Translation

O king of kings, then Lord Hari showed that He places Himself under the control of His devotees. Yaśodā caught her son and angrily tied Him with rope to the grinding mortar.

ādāya yad yad bahu dāma tat tat sv-alpaṁ prabhūtaṁ sva-sute yaśodā guṇair na baddhaḥ prakṛteḥ paro yaḥ kathaṁ sa baddho bhavatīha dāmnā

Translation

The ropes all became very small on her son. He who is beyond the material world cannot be bound with rope. How can He be bound with rope?

yadā yaśodā gata-bandhanecchā khinnā niṣaṇṇā nṛpa khinna-mānasā āsīt tadāyaṁ kṛpayā sva-bandhe svacchanda-yānaḥ sva-vaśo 'pi kṛṣṇaḥ

Translation

When, frustrated and depressed, Yaśodā stopped trying, then independent Kṛṣṇa kindly allowed her to bind Him.

eṣa prasādo na hi vīta-karmaṇāṁ na jṣānināṁ karma-dhiyāṁ kutaḥ punaḥ mātur yathābhūn nṛpa eṣa tasmān muktiṁ vyadhād bhaktim alaṁ na mādhavaḥ

Translation

O king, the mercy He gave His mother He never gave to the renunciants and philosophers, what to speak of the fruitive workers. Lord Kṛṣṇa gives them liberation, not devotional service.

tadaiva gopyas tu samāgatās tvaraṁ dṛṣṭvātha bhagnaṁ dadhi-mantha-bhājanam ulūkhale baddham atīva dāmabhir bhītaṁ śiśuṁ vīkṣya jagur ghṛṇāturāḥ

Translation

The gopīs quickly came. Seeing the broken yogurt-churn and the frightened child tightly bound with ropes to the grinding mortar, they became filled with compassion and spoke.

śrī-gopya ūcuḥ asmad-gṛheṣu pātrāṇi bhinatti satataṁ śiśuḥ tad apy enaṁ no vadāmaḥ kāruṇyān nanda-gehini

Translation

The gopīs said: In our homes the children break these clay jugs all the time. O wife of Nanda, we say that you are not kind.

gata-vyathe hy akaruṇe yaśode he vrajeśvari yaṣṭyā nirbhartsito bālas tvayā baddho ghaṭa-kṣayāt

Synonyms

Translation

O cold, merciless Yaśodā, O queen of Vraja, you beat this boy with a stick and tied Him up only because He broke a clay jug.

śrī-nārada uvāca ity uktāyāṁ yaśodāyāṁ vyagrāyāṁ gṛha-karmasu karṣann ulūkhalaṁ kṛṣṇo bālaiḥ śrī-yamunāṁ yayau

Synonyms

śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; iti thus ; uktāyām said ; yaśodāyām when Yaśodā ; gṛha-karmasu in housework ; karṣan pulling ; ulūkhalam the grinding mortar ; kṛṣṇaḥ Kṛṣṇa ; bālaiḥ with friends ; śrī-yamunām to the Yamunā ; yayau *went.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: After this was spoken and Yaśodā became absorbed in her housework, Kṛṣṇa, dragging the mortar along, went with the boys to the Yamunā.

tat-taṭe ca mahā-vṛkṣau purāṇau yamalārjunau tayor madhye gataḥ kṛṣṇo hasan dāmodaraḥ prabhuḥ

Synonyms

tat-taṭe on its shore ; ca also ; mahā-vṛkṣau two great trees ; purāṇau old ; yamala twin ; arjunau arjuna trees ; tayoḥ of them ; madhye in the middle ; gataḥ gone ; kṛṣṇaḥ Kṛṣṇa ; hasan smiling ; dāmodaraḥ His belly bound by a rope ; prabhuḥ *the Lord.

Translation

His belly bound with a rope, smiling Lord Kṛṣṇa wandered between two great old arjuna trees by the Yamunā's shore.

cakarṣa sahasā kṛṣṇas tiryag-gatam ulūkhalam karṣaṇena sa-mūlau dvau petatur bhūmi-maṇḍale

Synonyms

cakarṣa pulled ; sahasā at once ; kṛṣṇaḥ Kṛṣṇa ; tiryak-gatam sideways ; ulūkhalam grinding mortar ; karṣaṇena by pulling ; sa-mūlau with their roots ; dvau both ; petatuḥ fell ; bhūmi-maṇḍale *to the ground.

Translation

Kṛṣṇa tugged at the sideways grinding mortar. By His tug the two trees were uprooted and fell to the ground.

Verse text

pātatenāpi sabdo 'bhūt pracaṇḍo vajra-pātavat vinirgatau ca vṛkṣābhyāṁ devau dvāv edhaso 'gni-vat

Synonyms

pātatena by the falling ; api also ; śabdaḥ sound ; abhūt was ; pracaṇḍaḥ violent ; vajra-pātavat like a thunderbolt ; vinirgatau emerged ; ca also ; vṛkṣābhyām from the two trees ; devau demigods ; dvau two ; edhasaḥ agni-vat *effulgent as fires.

Translation

The violent sound of their falling was like thunder. From the two trees emerged two demigods splendid as fire.

Verse text

dāmodaraṁ parikramya pādau spṛṣṭau sva-maulinā kṛtaṣjalī hariṁ natvā tau tu tat-sammukhe sthitau

Synonyms

dāma rope ; udaram belly ; parikramya circumambulating ; pādau feet ; spṛṣṭau touching ; sva-maulinā with their helmets ; kṛtaṣjalī with folded hands ; harim to Lord Hari ; natvā offering obeisances ; tau they ; tu indeed ; tat-sammukhe in His presence ; sthitau *stood.

Translation

Circumambulating Lord Dāmodara, touching His feet with their helmets, and offering obeisances to Him, the two demigods stood before Him with folded hands.
Text 19

Verse text

śrī-devāv ūcatuḥ āvāṁ muktau brahma-daṇḍāt sadyas te 'cyuta darśanāt mābhūt te nija-bhaktānāṁ helanaṁ hy āvayor hare

Synonyms

śrī-devau ūcatuḥ the demigods said ; āvām we ; muktau liberated ; brahma-daṇḍāt from the punishment of a brāhmaṇa ; sadyaḥ at once ; te by You ; acyuta O infallible Lord ; darśanāt by the sight ; not ; abhūt was ; te of You ; nija-bhaktānām of the devotees ; helanam insult ; hi indeed ; avayoḥ of us ; hare *O Lord Hari.

Translation

The two demigods said: O infallible Lord, by seeing You we are now free from a brāhmaṇa's punishment. We should not have offended Your devotees.

karuṇā-nidhaye tubhyaṁ jagan-maṅgala-śīline dāmodarāya kṛṣṇāya govindāya namo namaḥ

Synonyms

karuṇā of mercy ; tubhyam to You ; jagat of the universes ; maṅgala auspiciousness ; śīline whose nature ; dāmodarāya whose belly is bound with a rope ; kṛṣṇāya to Lord Kṛṣṇa ; govindāya the pleasure of the cows, land, and senses ; namaḥ obeisances ; namaḥ *obeisances.

Translation

Obeisances, obeisances to You, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the pleasure of the cows, land, and senses, the auspiciousness of the worlds, an ocean of mercy, the Lord whose belly is bound with a rope!

Verse text

śrī-nārada uvāca iti natvā hariṁ tau dvau udīcīṁ ca diśaṁ gatau tadaiva hy āgatāḥ sarve nandādyā bhaya-kātarāḥ

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; iti thus ; natvā offering obeisances ; harim to Lord Hari ; tau dvau to them ; udīcīm north ; ca also ; diśam direction ; gatau gone ; tadā then ; eva indeed ; hi indeed ; āgatāḥ come ; sarve all ; nandādyāḥ headed by Nanda Mahārāja ; bhaya-kātarāḥ frightened.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Bowing down to Lord Hari, the two demigods left for the north. Then, headed by Nanda Mahārāja, the frightened cowherd people arrived.

kathaṁ vṛkṣau prāpatitau vinā vātaṁ vrajārbhakāḥ vadatāśu tadā bālā ūcuḥ sarve vrajaukasaḥ

Synonyms

katham how? ; vṛkṣau two trees ; prāpatitau thrown down ; vinā without ; vātam wind ; vraja of Vraja ; arbhakāḥ O children ; vadata please tell ; āśu at once ; tadā then ; bālāḥ the boys ; ūcuḥ said ; sarve all ; vraja in Vraja ; okasaḥ *who had homes.

Translation

When they were asked, "How did these two trees fall down without any wind? O children of Vraja, please tell us," the children of Vraja spoke.

śrī-bālā ūcuḥ anena patitau vṛkṣau tābhyāṁ dvau puruṣau sthitau enaṁ natvā gatāv adya tāv udīcyāṁ sphurat-prabhau

Synonyms

śrī-bālāḥ ūcuḥ the children said ; anena by Him ; patitau thrown down ; vṛkṣau the two trees ; tābhyām from them ; dvau two ; puruṣau men ; sthitau standing ; enam to Him ; natvā bowing down ; gatau gone ; adya now ; tau they ; udīcyām to the north ; sphurat-prabhau *effulgent.

Translation

The children said: Kṛṣṇa made the two trees fall. From the trees two effulgent men came. They bowed down to Kṛṣṇa and then went to the north.

Verse text

śrī-nārada uvāca iti śrutvā vacas teṣāṁ na te śraddadhire tataḥ mumoca nandaḥ svaṁ bālaṁ dāmnā baddham ulūkhale

Synonyms

śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; iti thus ; śrutvā hearing ; vacaḥ the words ; teṣām of them ; na not ; te they ; śraddadhire believed ; tataḥ then ; mumoca released ; nandaḥ Nanda ; svam own ; bālam boy ; dāmnā by ropes ; baddham bound ; ulūkhale *to the grinding mortar.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: The gopas did not believe what they heard from the boys. Then Nanda untied His boy bound to the grinding mortar with ropes.

samlālayan svāṅka-deśe samāghrāya śiśuṁ nṛpa nirbhartsya bhāminīṁ nando viprebhyo go-śataṁ dadau

Synonyms

samlālayan caressing ; svāṅka-deśe on his lap ; samāghrāya smelling ; śiśum his boy ; nṛpa O king ; nirbhartsya rebuking ; bhāminīm his wife ; nandaḥ Nanda ; viprebhyaḥ to the brāhmaṇas ; gaḥ of cows ; śatam a hundred ; dadau *gave.

Translation

Then Nanda placed his boy on his lap, embraced Him, smelled Him, rebuked his wife, and gave a hundred cows in charity to the brāhmaṇas.

śrī-bahulāśva uvāca kāv imau puruṣau divyau vada devarṣi-sattama kena doṣeṇa vṛkṣatvaṁ prāpitau yamalārjunau

Synonyms

śrī-bahulāśvaḥ uvāca Śrī Bahulāśva said ; kau who? ; imau they ; puruṣau persons ; divyau effulgent ; vada tell ; devarṣi-sattama O best of the demigod sages ; kena by what? ; doṣeṇa fault ; vṛkṣatvam the state of being trees ; prāpitau attained ; yamala-arjunau *two arjuna trees.

Translation

Śrī Bahulāśva said: Who were those two effulgent men? O best of the demigod sages, please tell me. Because of what sin did they become two arjuna trees?

śrī-nārada uvāca nalakūvara-maṇigrīvau rāja-rāja-sutau parau jagmatur nandana-vanaṁ mandākinyās taṭe sthitau

Synonyms

śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; nalakūvara-maṇigrīvau Nalakūvara and Maṇigrīvau ; rāja-rāja-sutau the sons of the great king of kings ; parau great ; jagmatuḥ went ; nandana-vanam to the Nandana forest ; mandākinyāḥ of the celestial Ganges ; taṭe on the shore ; sthitau *situated.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: They were the two demigods Nalakūvara and Maṇigrīva, the two demigod sons of the great king (Kuvera). (One day) they both went to the Nandana forest by the shore of the celestial Ganges.

apsarobhir gīyamānau ceratur gata-vāsasau varuṇī-madirā-mattau yuvanau dravya-darpitau

Synonyms

apsarobhiḥ by apsaras ; gīyamānau sung ; ceratuḥ went ; gata-vāsasau without clothing ; varuṇī-madirā by varuṇī wine ; mattau intoxicated ; yuvanau young ; dravya of their possessions ; darpitau *proud.

Translation

Drunk on varuṇī wine and proud of their possesions, they walked naked as many apsarās sang to them.

kadācid devalo nāma munīndro veda-pāragaḥ nagnau dṛṣṭvā ca tāv āha duṣṭa-śīlau gata-smṛtī

Synonyms

kadācit one time ; devalaḥ Devala ; nāma named ; muni-indraḥ the king of sages ; veda of the Vedas ; pāra to the farther shore ; gaḥ gone ; nagnau the two naked men ; dṛṣṭvā seeing ; ca and ; tau to them ; āha said ; duṣṭa-śīlau wicked ; gata-smṛtī *forgetful.

Translation

One day the great sage named Devala, who had gone to the farther shore of the Vedas, saw the two degenerate, naked, forgetful men and spoke to them.

śrī-devala uvāca yuvāṁ vṛkṣa-samau dṛṣṭau nirlajjau dravya-darpitau tasmād vṛkṣau tu bhūyas taṁ varṣāṇāṁ śatakaṁ bhuvi

Synonyms

śrī-devalaḥ uvāca Śrī Devala said ; yuvām you both ; vṛkṣa trees ; samau equal to ; dṛṣṭau seen ; nirlajjau without shame ; dravya-darpitau proud of possessions ; tasmāt then ; vṛkṣau trees ; tu indeed ; bhūyaḥ become ; tam that ; varṣāṇām of years ; śatakam a hundred ; bhuvi *on the earth.

Translation

Śrī Devala Muni said: I see You two shameless and proud men have become like trees. For this reason you will now be trees for a hundred years on the earth.

dvāparānte bhārate ca māthure vraja-maṇḍale kalinda-nandinī-tīre mahāvana-samīpataḥ paripūrṇatamaṁ sākṣāt kṛṣṇaṁ dāmodaraṁ harim goloka-nāthaṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā pūrva-rūpau bhaviṣyathaḥ

dvāpara-ante at the end of Dvāpara-yuga ; bhārate in Bhārata-varṣa ; ca also ; māthure in Mathurā ; vraja-maṇḍale in the circle of Vraja ; kalinda-nandinī-tīre on the Yamunā's shore ; mahāvana-samīpataḥ near Mahāvana forest ; paripūrṇatamam the Supreme Personality of Godhead ; sākṣāt directly ; kṛṣṇam Kṛṣṇa ; dāmodaram Dāmodara ; harim Hari ; goloka-nātham the master of Goloka ; tam Him ; dṛṣṭvā seeing ; pūrva previous ; rūpau form ; bhaviṣyathaḥ *you will attain.

Translation

At the end of Dvāpara-yuga, in Bhārata-varṣa, in Māthura district, in the circle of Vraja, on the Yamunā's shore near Mahāvana forest, you will see the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, who is the master of Goloka, and who is known as Dāmodara and Hari. When you see Him, you will regain your original forms.

itthaṁ devala-śāpena vṛkṣatvaṁ prāpitau nṛpa nalakūvara-maṇigrīvau śrī-kṛṣṇena vimocitau

Synonyms

ittham thus ; devala of Devala ; śāpena by the curse ; vṛkṣatvam the state of being trees ; prāpitau attained ; nṛpa O king ; nalakūvara Nalakūvara ; maṇigrīvau and Maṇigrīva ; śrī-kṛṣṇena by Lord Kṛṣṇa ; vimocitau *released.

Translation

In this way, by Devala Muni's curse, Nalakūvara and Maṇigrīva became trees and were liberated by Lord Kṛṣṇa.
