Chapter Eight Sarva-mahiṣy-udvahaḥ The Marriages of All the Queens

Text 1

Verse text

anyāsāṁ kṛṣṇa-patnīnāṁ maṅgalaṁ śṛṇu maithila sarva-pāpa-haraṁ puṇyaṁ āyur-vardhanam uttamam

Synonyms

Translation

O king of Mithilā, please hear the auspicious story of Lord Kṛṣṇa's other queens, a sacred story that removes all sins and increases the span of one's life.

Verse text

satrājitāya sūryeṇa dattaḥ sākṣāt syamantakaḥ ugrasenāya sa maṇiḥ śrī-kṛṣṇenābhiyācitaḥ

Synonyms

satrājitāya to Satrajit ; sūryeṇa by the sun-god ; dattaḥ given ; sākṣāt directly ; syamantakaḥ the Syamantaka jewel ; ugrasenāya for Ugrasena ; sa that ; maṇiḥ jewel ; śrī-kṛṣṇena by Lord Kṛṣṇa ; abhiyācitaḥ *requested.

Translation

When the sun-god gave the Syamantaka jewel to Satrājit, Lord Kṛṣṇa asked that the jewel be given to King Ugrasena.

Verse text

satrājitas taṁ na dadau dravya-lobhena maithila dine dine svarṇa-bhārān aṣṭau yaḥ sṛjati svataḥ

Synonyms

satrājitaḥ Satrajit ; tam that ; na not ; dadau gave ; dravya-lobhena greedy to attain possessions ; maithila O king of Mithilā ; dine day ; dine after day ; svarṇa-bhārān bharas of gold ; aṣṭau eight ; yaḥ which ; sṛjati creates ; svataḥ *of its own accord.

Translation

O king of Mithilā, out of greed King Satrājit did not give away the jewel, which daily created eight bhāras of gold.

atha prasenas tad-bhrātā maṇiṁ kaṇṭhe nidhāya saḥ saindhavaṁ hayam āruhya mṛgayāṁ vyacarad vane

Synonyms

atha then ; prasenaḥ Prasena ; tad-bhrātā his brother ; maṇim the jewel ; kaṇṭhe on his neck ; nidhāya placing ; saḥ he ; saindhavam a sindhu ; hayam hore ; āruhya mounting ; mṛgayām hunting ; vyacarat did ; vane *in the forest.

Translation

Then, placing the jewel on his neck, Satrājit's brother Prasena mounted a sindhu horse and went hunting in the forest.

siṁhena māritaḥ so 'pi siṁho jāmbavatā hataḥ gṛhītvā taṁ maṇiṁ sadyo jāmbavān sva-guhāṁ gataḥ

Synonyms

Translation

A lion killed Prasena. Then Jāmbavān killed the lion and took the jewel to his cave.

kṛṣṇena nihato bhrātā maṇigrīvo vanaṁ gataḥ nāyātaḥ sva-sabhā-madhye iti satrājito 'bravīt

Synonyms

Translation

Satrājit said: When my brother, wearing the jewel around his neck, went to the forest, Kṛṣṇa killed him. That is why my brother has not returned to his people.

bhagavān duryaśo-lipto nāgarais tu vanaṁ gataḥ prasenam aśvaṁ siṁhaṁ ca hataṁ prekṣya mahā-mate

Synonyms

bhagavān the Supreme Personality of Godhead ; duryaśaḥ with infamy ; liptaḥ anointed ; nāgaraiḥ with people of the city ; tu indeed ; vanam to the forest ; gataḥ went ; prasenam Prasena ; aśvam the horse ; siṁham the lion ; ca and ; hatam killed ; prekṣya seeing ; mahā-mate *O noble-hearted one.

Translation

O noble-hearted one, Lord Kṛṣṇa, His good reputation tainted by the rumor, went with some people of the city to the forest. There He saw Prasena, the horse, and the lion, all of them dead.

Verse text

rkṣa-rāja-bilaṁ gatvā maṇiṁ hartuṁ svayaṁ hariḥ yuddhaṁ kṛtvāṣṭa-viṁśāhaṁ ajayad rkṣa-nāyakam

Synonyms

Translation

Entering Jāmbavān's cave to recover the jewel, for 28 days Lord Kṛṣṇa fought with Jāmbavān, the king of the ṛkṣas.

Verse text

tena dattā jāmbavatī haraye kanyakā śubhā maṇinā saha rājendra dvārakām āyayau hariḥ

Synonyms

tena by him ; dattā givebn ; jāmbavatī Jāmbavatī ; haraye to Lord Kṛṣṇa ; kanyakā daughter ; śubhā beautiful ; maṇinā the jewel ; saha with ; rājendra O king of kings ; dvārakām to Dvārakā ; āyayau went ; hariḥ *Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Translation

O king of kings, Jāmbavān gave the jewel and his beautiful daughter, Jāmbavatī, to Lord Kṛṣṇa. Then the Lord returned to Dvārakā.

satrājitāya pradadau maṇiṁ nirlāṣchanaḥ prabhuḥ vrīḍito 'vāṅ-mukho bhīto rājā satrājito maṇim gṛhītvāpi punas tasmai śrī-kṛṣṇāya mahātmane satyabhāmāṁ sutāṁ prādāc chānty-arthaṁ maithileśvara

Translation

His good reputation restored, Lord Kṛṣṇa gave the Jewel to Satrājit. Embarrassed, frightened, and speechless, Satrājit gave his daughter, Satyabhāmā, in marriage to Lord Kṛṣṇa to pacify Him.

pāṇḍavānāṁ sahāyārthaṁ indraprasthaṁ gato hariḥ tatraiva varṣikān māsān nyavātsīd bandhu-vatsalaḥ

Synonyms

pāṇḍavānām pf the Pandavas ; sahāyārtham forhelp ; indraprastham to hastinapura ; gataḥ went ; hariḥ Lord Kṛṣṇa ; tatra there ; eva indeed ; varṣikān of the monsoon ; māsān the months ; nyavātsīt resided ; bandhu-vatsalaḥ *who loves His relatives.

Translation

Then Lord Kṛṣṇa, who dearly loves His relatives, went to Hastināpura and stayed there for the months of the monsoon to help the Pāṇḍavas.

Verse text

ekadā ratham āruhya harir gāṇḍīvinā saha su-nire yamunā-tīre mṛgayārthī viniryayau

Synonyms

ekadā one day ; ratham a chariot ; āruhya mounting ; hariḥ Kṛṣṇa ; gāṇḍīvinā with Arjuna ; saha with ; su-nire beautiful waters ; yamunā-tīre on the Yamunā's shore ; mṛgayārthī wishing to hunt ; viniryayau *went.

Translation

One day Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna went hunting on the shore of the beautiful Yamunā.

Verse text

tapaś carantī kālindī śrī-kṛṣṇaṁ varam icchati darśitā pāṇḍavenāpi tāṁ gṛhītvā jagāma ha

Synonyms

tapaḥ austerities ; carantī performing ; kālindī Kālindī ; śrī-kṛṣṇam to Śrī Kṛṣṇa ; varam as her husband ; icchati desring ; darśitā showed ; pāṇḍavena by Arjuna ; api even ; tām her ; gṛhītvā taking ; jagāma went ; ha *indeed.

Translation

There Arjuna found Kālindī, who had been performing austerities to attain Lord Kṛṣṇa as her husband. Arjuna showed her to Lord Kṛṣṇa, and He accepted her and took her with Him.

Verse text

dvārakām etya kālindīṁ sūrya-kanyāṁ manoharām upayeme vidhānena vitanvan maṅgalaṁ param

Synonyms

dvārakām to Dvārakā ; etya going ; kālindīm Kālindī ; sūrya-kanyām the daughter of the sun-god ; manoharām beautiful ; upayeme married ; vidhānena according to the proper rituals ; vitanvan giving ; maṅgalam auspiciousness ; param *great.

Translation

Returning to Dvārakā, Lord Kṛṣṇa married beautiful Kālindī, the sun-god's daughter, in a proper and auspicious ritual.

Verse text

āvantya-rāja-tanujāṁ mitravindāṁ manoharām svayamvare tāṁ jahāra bhagavān rukmiṇīṁ yathā

Synonyms

āvantya-rāja-tanujām the daughter of the king of Avanti-pura ; mitravindām Mitravindā ; manoharām beautiful ; svayamvare in the svayamvara ; tām her ; jahāra took ; bhagavān the Lord ; rukmiṇīm Rukmiṇī ; yathā *as.

Translation

Then, as He had kidnapped Rukmiṇī, Lord Kṛṣṇa kidnapped beautiful Mitravindā, the princess of Avantya-deśa, at the time of her svayamvara.

nagnajit-kanyakāṁ satyāṁ damitvā sapta go-vṛṣān paśyatāṁ sarva-lokānāṁ upayeme hariḥ svayam

Synonyms

nagnajit-kanyakām the daughter of King Nagnajit ; satyām Stayā ; damitvā subduing ; sapta seven ; go-vṛṣān bulls ; paśyatām looking on ; sarva-lokānām as all the people ; upayeme married ; hariḥ Lord Kṛṣṇa ; svayam *personally.

Translation

Then, after subduing seven bulls as all the people watched, Lord Kṛṣṇa married Satyā, the daughter of KIng Nagnajit.

kaikeya-rāja-tanujāṁ bhadrāṁ tu bhagavān hariḥ kālindīm iva tāṁ śaśvad upayeme vidhānataḥ

Synonyms

kaikeya-rāja-tanujām the daughter of the kin g of Kaikeya ; bhadrām Bhadrā ; tu indeed ; bhagavān Lord ; hariḥ Kṛṣṇa ; kālindīm Kālindī ; iva like ; tām her ; śaśvat eternally ; upayeme married ; vidhānataḥ *according to the proper rituals.

Translation

Then, as He had married Kālindī, Lord Kṛṣṇa married Bhadrā, the princess of Kaikeya, in a proper ritual.

bṛhatsena-sutāṁ rājal lakṣmaṇāṁ lakṣaṇair yutām chittvā matsyam arīn jitvā jagrāha bhagavān hariḥ

Synonyms

Translation

O king, after piercing a fish and defeating many rivals, Lord Kṛṣṇa took virtuous Lakṣmaṇā, the daughter of King Bṛhatsena.

Verse text

tathā ṣoḍaśa-sāhasraṁ śataṁ ca nṛpa-kanyakāḥ bhaumaṁ hatvā tan-nirodhād āhṛtāś cāru-darśanāḥ

Synonyms

tathā then ; ṣoḍaśa-sāhasraṁ śatam 16,100 ; ca and ; nṛpa-kanyakāḥ princesses ; bhaumam Bhaumāsura ; hatvā killing ; tan-nirodhāt from his prison ; āhṛtāś taken ; cāru-darśanāḥ *very beautiful.

Translation

Then Lord Kṛṣṇa killed the demon Bhaumāsura and released from his prison 16,100 beautiful princesses.

tāsāṁ muhūrta ekasmin nānāgāreṣu yoṣitām sa-vidhiṁ jagṛhe pāṇīn nānā-rūpaḥ sva-māyayā

Synonyms

tāsām of them ; muhūrte in a moment ; ekasmin single ; nānāgāreṣu in many differed rooms ; yoṣitām of the women ; sa-vidhim according to the proper rituals ; jagṛhe accepted ; pāṇīn the hand ; nānā-rūpaḥ in many forms ; sva-māyayā *by His mystic potency.

Translation

By the arrangement of His yogamāyā potency expanding into many forms, Lord Kṛṣṇa accepted the hands of all these girls in many different rooms in a single moment.

ekaikaśas tāḥ kṛṣṇasya putrān daśa daśābalāḥ ajīnanann anavamān pituḥ sarvātma-sampadā

Synonyms

ekaikaśaḥ one by one ; tāḥ them ; kṛṣṇasya of Lord Kṛṣṇa ; putrān sons ; daśa ten ; daśa and ten ; abalāḥ women ; ajīnanan gave birth ; anavamān exalted ; pituḥ of their father ; sarvātma-sampadā *with all the virtues.

Translation

Each wife gave birth to ten exalted sons, each son having all his father's virtues.

rukmiṇyāṁ bhīṣma-kanyāyāṁ pradyumnaḥ prathamo 'bhavat kāmadevāvatāro 'yaṁ pitṛvat-sarva-lakṣaṇaḥ

Translation

From Rukmiṇī was born the first son, Pradyumna, who had all the transcendental qualities of His father, and who was an incarnation of Kāmadeva.

Verse text

śambaro nirdayas tokaṁ hṛtvābdhau taṁ samākṣipat matsyodare gato so 'pi na mamāra hareḥ sutaḥ

Synonyms

śambaraḥ Sambara ; nirdayaḥ merciless ; tokam the child ; hṛtvā kidnapping ; abdhau in the ocean ; tam him ; samākṣipat threw ; matsya of a fish ; udare in the belly ; gataḥ entered ; saḥ he ; api even ; na not ; mamāra died ; hareḥ of Lord Kṛṣṇa ; sutaḥ *the son.

Translation

Then merciless Śambara kidnapped the infant Pradyumna and threw him in the ocean. Lord Kṛṣṇa's son Pradyumna entered the belly of a great fish and did not die.

matsyodarān nirgato 'sau bhāryayā paripālitaḥ jṣātvā śatru-kṛtāṁ vārtāṁ sa kaṛṣṇī rūḍha-yauvanaḥ

Synonyms

matsya of the fish ; udarāt from the belly ; nirgataḥ gone ; asau he ; bhāryayā by his wife ; paripālitaḥ protected ; jṣātvā understanding ; śatru by his enemy ; kṛtām done ; vārtām information ; sa he ; kaṛṣṇī the son of Lord Kṛṣṇa ; rūḍha-yauvanaḥ *in full youth.

Translation

Taken from the fish's belly, and carefully protected by his wife, Pradyumna suddenly grew to become a young man. Then he understood what his enemy had done.

hatvā taṁ śambaraṁ śatruṁ bhāryayā varayā yutaḥ dvārakām āyayau rājaṁs citraṁ karma ca tasya tat

Synonyms

Translation

O king, after killing his enemy Śambara, Pradyumna went with his beautiful wife to Dvārakā. His deeds are certainly very wonderful.

Verse text

sa rukmiṇo duhitaraṁ hṛtvā bhojakaṭāt purāt svayamvara-sthalād rājann upayeme mahā-rathaḥ

Synonyms

sa he ; rukmiṇaḥ of Rukmī ; duhitaram the daughter ; hṛtvā kidnapping ; bhojakaṭāt from Bhojakata ; purāt city ; svayamvara-sthalāt from the place of the svayamvara ; rājann O king ; upayeme married ; mahā-rathaḥ *the great chariot-fighter.

Translation

The great chariot-fighter Pradyumna also kidnapped Rukmī's daughter from the place of her svayamvara in Bhojakaṭa City and married her.

Verse text

tasmāt suto 'niruddho 'bhūn nāgāyuta-balānvitaḥ sura-jyeṣṭhāvatāro 'yaṁ śāradendīvara-prabhaḥ

Synonyms

tasmāt from him ; sutaḥ the son ; aniruddhaḥ Aniruddha ; abhūt was ; nāgāyuta-balānvitaḥ as strong as ten thousand elephants ; sura of the demigods ; jyeṣṭha the best ; avatāraḥ the incarnation ; ayam he ; śāradendīvara-prabhaḥ *glorious as a blue lotus growing in the autumn.

Translation

From Pradyumna was born a son, Aniruddha, who was strong as ten thousand elephants and glorious as a blue autumn lotus. He was an incarnation of the first of the demigods.

Verse text

catur-vyūhāvatārasya paripūrṇatamasya hi evaṁ vicitraṁ caritaṁ vivāhānāṁ su-maṅgalam

Synonyms

catur-vyūhāvatārasya of the incarnation of the four expansions of the catur-vyūha ; paripūrṇatamasya perfect ; hi indeed ; evam thus ; vicitram wonder ; caritam stroy ; vivāhānām of the marriages ; su-maṅgalam *very auspicious.

Translation

This is the wonderful and auspicious story of the marriages of Lord Kṛṣṇa, the origin of the catur-vyūha expansions of the Lord.

sarva-pāpa-haraṁ puṇyaṁ āyur-vardhanam uttamam mayā te kathitaṁ rājan kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi

Synonyms

sarva-pāpa-haram removing all sins ; puṇyam sacred ; āyur-vardhanam increasing the span of life ; uttamam transcendental ; mayā by me ; te indeed ; kathitam spoken ; rājan O king ; kim what? ; bhūyaḥ more ; śrotum to hear ; icchasi *do you wish.

Translation

O king, now I have spoken to you this sacred story, which removes all sins and increases one's span of life. What more do you wish to hear?
