Text 1

Verse text

śrī-nārada uvāca atha devau rāma-kṛṣṇau samīpaṁ jagmatuḥ sākṣād vṛṣīnbhiḥ parivāritau

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; atha then ; devau the two Lords ; rāma-kṛṣṇau Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma ; devakī-vasudevayoḥ of Devakī and Vasudeva ; samīpam near ; jagmatuḥ went ; sākṣāt directly ; vṛṣīnbhiḥ with the Vṛndāvanarsnis ; parivāritau accompanied.

Translation

devakī-vasudevayoḥ Śrī Nārada said: Then, accompanied by the Vṛṣṇis, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, the two Supreme Personalities of Godhead, approached Devakī and Vasudeva.

svatas tayor bandhanāni yayuḥ śithilitāṁ nṛpa tau vīkṣya garuḍaṁ prāptaṁ nāga-pāśa-guṇā yathā

Synonyms

svataḥ personally ; tayoḥ of Them ; bandhanāni the bonds ; yayuḥ went ; śithilitām to looseness ; nṛpa O king ; tau Them ; vīkṣya seeing ; garuḍam Garuḍa ; prāptam attained ; nāga-pāśa-guṇā the snake ropes ; yathā as.

Translation

O king, seeing their condition, Lord Kṛṣṇa at once untied their bonds, as Garuḍa unties a knotted rope of snakes.

sva-prabhāva-vidau vīkṣya pitarau sa-balo hariḥ sadyas tatāna svāṁ māyāṁ jagan-moha-kariṁ balāt

Synonyms

sva-prabhāva-vidau aware of His own power ; vīkṣya seeing ; pitarau the parents ; sa-balaḥ with Balarāma ; hariḥ Kṛṣṇa ; sadyaḥ at once ; tatāna expanded ; svām own ; māyām illusion ; jagan-moha-karim which bewilders the universes ; balāt by His power.

Translation

Seeing that Their parents had become aware of Their transcendental power, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma at once bewildered them with His illusory potency, which bewilders all the worlds.

Verse text

rāma-kṛṣṇau sutau jṣātvā śaurir moha-samākulaḥ devakyā sahasotthāya sasvaje cāśru-pūritaḥ

Synonyms

rāma-kṛṣṇau Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma ; sutau the two sons ; jṣātvā understanding ; śauriḥ Vasudeva ; moha-samākulaḥ bewildered ; devakyā with Devakī ; sahasā at once ; utthāya rising ; sasvaje embraced ; ca and ; aśru with tears ; pūritaḥ filled.

Translation

Now thinking Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma his own sons, bewildered Vasudeva suddenly stood up. His eyes filled with tears, he and Devakī embraced their two sons.

tāv āśvāsya hariḥ sadyo vṛṣṇibhiḥ parivāritaḥ mātāmahaṁ tūgrasenaṁ cakāra mathurādhipam

Synonyms

tau them ; āśvāsya consoling ; hariḥ Lord Kṛṣṇa ; sadyaḥ at once ; vṛṣṇibhiḥ the Vrsnis ; parivāritaḥ with ; mātāmaham His maternal grandfather ; tu indeed ; ugrasenam Ugrasena ; cakāra made ; mathurādhipam the king of Mathurā.

Translation

Accompanied by the Vṛṣṇis, Lord Kṛṣṇa consoled His parents. Then He crowned king of Mathurā His maternal grandfather, Ugrasena.

āhūya yādavān kaṁsa- bhayād deśāntaraṁ gatān premṇā nivāsayām āsa sa-kuṭumbān yadoḥ purī

Synonyms

āhūya calling ; yādavān the Yadavas ; kaṁsa of Kaṁsa ; bhayāt out of fear ; deśāntaram to other countries ; gatān gone ; premṇā with love ; nivāsayām āsa gave homes ; sa-kuṭumbān with their families ; yadoḥ of the Yadavas ; purī in the city.

Translation

Calling together the Yādavas that had fled to other countries out of fear of Kaṁsa, Lord Kṛṣṇa affectionaltely gave homes in Mathurā to them and their families.

Verse text

nanda-rājaṁ gopa-gaṇaiḥ sva-gṛhān gantum udyatam natvā taṁ sa-balaḥ prāha mohayann iva māyayā

Synonyms

nanda-rājam King Nanda ; gopa-gaṇaiḥ with the gopas ; sva-gṛhān own homes ; gantum to go ; udyatam prepared ; natvā bowing ; tam to him ; sa-balaḥ with Balarāma ; prāha said ; mohayann bewildering ; iva as if ; māyayā with His illusory potency.

Translation

Then, bewildering them with Their illusory potency, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma bowed down before King Nanda and ther gopas, who were now eager to return to theor homes. Kṛṣṇa said to them:

Verse text

atraiva vāsaṁ kuru tāta puryāṁ gantuṁ yadīcchā manasotthitā syāt paścād ahaṁ vai sa-balo yadūn vā vidhāya pārśvaṁ tava cāgamiṣye

Synonyms

atra here ; eva indeed ; vāsam residence ; kuru do ; tata O father ; puryām in the city ; gantum to go ; yadi if ; icchā the desire ; manasā by the mind ; utthitā risen ; syāt may be ; paścāt then ; aham I ; vai indeed ; sa-balaḥ with Balarāma ; yadūn to the Yadavas ; indeed ; vidhāya placing ; pārśvam at the side ; tava of you ; ca and ; āgamiṣye I will come.

Translation

Father, please stay here in Mathurā for a while. If the desire to leave has risen in your heart, then please return to Vraja. Balarāma and I, with the Yādavas at Our side, will return there after a little while.

śrī-nārada uvāca evaṁ śrī-rāma-kṛṣṇābhyāṁ nanda-rājaḥ prapūjitaḥ āliṅgya śauriṁ gopālair yayau premāturo vrajam

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; evam thus ; śrī-rāma-kṛṣṇābhyām with Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma ; nanda-rājaḥ King Nanda ; prapūjitaḥ worshiped ; āliṅgya embraced ; śaurim Vasudeva ; gopālaiḥ with the gopas ; yayau went ; premāturaḥ overcome with love ; vrajam to Vraja.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: After being worshiped by Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, affectionate King Nanda embraced Vasudeva and then returned with the gopas to Vraja.

dattaṁ śrī-kṛṣṇa-janmarkṣe dhenūnāṁ niyutaṁ purā brāhmaṇebhyo dadau śaurir

Synonyms

dattam given ; śrī-kṛṣṇa-janmarkṣe on Lord Kṛṣṇa's birthday ; dhenūnām ifcows ; niyutam a million ; purā previously ; brāhmaṇebhyaḥ to the Balarāmas ; dadau gave ; śauriḥ Vasudeva ; vastra-mālā-sv-alaṅkṛtam garments and ornaments.

Translation

vastra-mālā-sv-alaṅkṛtam Then Vasudeva gave a million cows, along with many valuable garments and ornaments, in charity to the brāhmaṇas. This was the charity that previously he gave in meditation on the day of Lord Kṛṣṇa's birth.

śaurir gargaṁ samāhūya yajṣopavītaṁ vidhi-vat kārayām āsa dharma-vit

Synonyms

śauriḥ Vasudwva ; gargam Garga Muni ; samāhūya calling ; śrī-kṛṣṇa-baladevayoḥ of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma ; yajṣopavītam giving the sacred thread ; vidhi-vat according to the rules ; kārayām āsa did ; dharma-vit knowing the truth of religion.

Translation

śrī-kṛṣṇa-baladevayoḥ Then pious Vasudeva called Garga Muni and had him perform the sacred-thread ceremony for Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma.

Verse text

rāma-kṛṣṇau sarva-vidyā- dhyayanaṁ kartum udyatau guroḥ sāndīpaneḥ pārśvaṁ jagmatur janavat parau

Synonyms

rāma-kṛṣṇau Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma ; sarva-vidyā of all knowledge ; adhyayanam the study ; kartum to do ; udyatau eager ; guroḥ of the guru ; sāndīpaneḥ Sāndīpani Muni ; pārśvam at the side ; jagmatuḥ went ; janavat as ordinary persons ; parau the two Supreme Personalities of Godhead.

Translation

Then, as if They were ordinary boys eager to learn all things, the two Supreme Personalities of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, went to the home of Their guru, Sāndīpani Muni.

kṛtvā paraṁ guroḥ sevaṁ laghu-kālena mādhavau sarva-vidyāṁ jagṛhatuḥ sarva-vidyā-vidāṁ varau

Synonyms

kṛtvā doing ; param great ; guroḥ of the guru ; sevam service ; laghu-kālena in a short time ; mādhavau Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma ; sarva-vidyām all knowledge ; jagṛhatuḥ grasped ; sarva-vidyā-vidām of the knowers of all knowledge ; varau the best.

Translation

After rendering excellent service to Their guru, in a very short time Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, who were already the best of all-knowing philosophers, became learned in everything.

gurave dakṣiṇāṁ dātuṁ udyatau tau kṛtāṣjalī mṛtaṁ putraṁ dakṣiṇāyāṁ tābhyāṁ vavre gurur dvijaḥ

Synonyms

gurave to Their guru ; dakṣiṇām daksina ; dātum to give ; udyatau eager ; tau They ; kṛtāṣjalī with folded hands ; mṛtam dead ; putram son ; dakṣiṇāyām in daksina ; tābhyām to Them ; vavre chose ; guruḥ of the guru ; dvijaḥ the brāhmaṇa.

Translation

When Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma approached with folded hands to offer daksiṇā, Their brāhmaṇa guru chose the return of his dead son as his dakṣiṇā.

Verse text

ratham āruhya tau dantau prabhāse cābdhi-nikaṭaṁ jagmatur bhīma-vikramau

Synonyms

ratham chariot ; āruhya climbing ; tau They ; dantau austere ; śātakumbha-paricchadam made of gold ; prabhāse at Prabhasa-ksetra ; ca and ; abdhi the ocean ; nikaṭam near ; jagmatuḥ went ; bhīma-vikramau very powerful.

Translation

śātakumbha-paricchadam Riding in a golden chariot, powerful Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma came to Prabhāsa-kṣetra by the shore of the ocean.

Verse text

sadyaḥ prakampitaḥ sindhū ratnopāyanam uttamam nītvā tac-caraṇopānte nipapāta kṛtāṣjaliḥ

Synonyms

sadyaḥ at once ; prakampitaḥ trembling ; sindhū the ocean ; ratna of jewels ; upāyanam gift ; uttamam great ; nītvā bringing ; tat-caraṇopānte at Their feet ; nipapāta fell ; kṛtāṣjaliḥ with folded hands.

Translation

At once the deity of the ocean appeared. Trembling, he offered a gift of jewels to Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma and with folded hands fell at Their feet.

Verse text

tam āha bhagavān śīghraṁ putraṁ dehi guror mama tvayā tad-grahaṇaṁ kṛtam

Synonyms

tam to him ; āha said ; bhagavān the Supreme Personality of Godhead ; śīghram at once ; putram the son ; dehi give ; guroḥ of the guru ; mama of Me ; pracaṇḍormi-ghaṭāṭopaiḥ with powerful waves ; tvayā by you ; tad-grahaṇam tha taking of him ; kṛtam done.

Translation

pracaṇḍormi-ghaṭāṭopais To him Lord Kṛṣṇa said, "Return at once My guru's son, whom you took with your powerful waves."

Verse text

śrī-samudra uvāca bhagavan deva-deveśa na mayā bālako hṛtaḥ hṛtaḥ paṣcajanenāsau śaṅkha-rūpāsureṇa vai

Synonyms

śrī-samudra uvāca the ocean said ; bhagavan O Lord ; deva-deveśa O master of the demigods ; na not ; mayā by me ; bālakaḥ the boy ; hṛtaḥ taken ; hṛtaḥ taken ; paṣcajanena by Pancajana ; asau he ; śaṅkha-rūpāsureṇa a demon in the form of a conch ; vai certainly.

Translation

The ocean deity said: O Lord, O master of the demigods, I did not take the boy. The conch-demon Paṣcajana took him.

Verse text

vasan sadā mad-udare baliṣṭho daitya-puṅgavaḥ jetuṁ yogyas tvayā deva devānāṁ bhaya-kārakaḥ

Synonyms

vasan residing ; sadā always ; mad-udare in my belly ; baliṣṭhaḥ powerful ; daitya-puṅgavaḥ great demon ; jetum to defeat ; yogyaḥ proper ; tvayā by You ; deva O Lord ; devānām of the demigods ; bhaya-kārakaḥ the bringer of fear.

Translation

O Lord, You are so powerful that You frighten even the demigods. Therefore it is proper that You defeat this very strong demon that always stays in my abdomen.

śrī-nārada uvāca tenokto bhagavān kṛṣṇo vāso baddhvā kaṭau dṛḍham nipapāta mahā-vegāt samudre bhīma-nādini

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; tena by him ; uktaḥ addressed ; bhagavān the Supreme Personality of Godhead ; kṛṣṇaḥ Kṛṣṇa ; vāsaḥ garment ; baddhvā tying ; kaṭau at His waist ; dṛḍham firm ; nipapāta dived ; mahā-vegāt quickly ; samudre in the ocean ; bhīma-nādini with terrible waves.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: When He heard these words, Lord Kṛṣṇa tightened the sash at His waist and dove into the ocean of terrible waves.

Verse text

śrī-kṛṣṇasya nipātena cakampe 'bdhir bhṛśaṁ vajrā- kuṭeneva videha-rāṭ

Synonyms

śrī-kṛṣṇasya of Śrī Kṛṣṇa ; nipātena by the dive ; tri-lokī-bhāra-dhāriṇaḥ holding the three worlds ; cakampe trembled ; abdhiḥ the ocean ; bhṛśam greatly ; vajrā-kuṭena with a thunderbolt ; iva like ; videha-rāṭ O king of Videha.

Translation

tri-lokī-bhāra-dhāriṇaḥ O king of Videha, when Lord Kṛṣṇa dove into it, the ocean, which holds up the three worlds, trembled as if it had been struck by a thunderbolt.

Verse text

tataḥ paṣcajano daityo yoddhuṁ śrī-kṛṣṇa-sammukhe āgataḥ sahasā vīraḥ śūlaṁ cikṣepa mādhave

Synonyms

tataḥ then ; paṣcajanaḥ Pancajana ; daityaḥ the demon ; yoddhum to fight ; śrī-kṛṣṇa-sammukhe facing Śrī Kṛṣṇa ; āgataḥ came ; sahasā at once ; vīraḥ ferocious ; śūlam a spear ; cikṣepa threw ; mādhave at Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Translation

Eager to fight, the ferocious demon Paṣcajana at once came before Lord Kṛṣṇa and threw a spear at Him.

haste gṛhītvā tac-chūlaṁ tenaivābhijaghāna tam tad-ghātena prapatito mūrchito vāri-maṇḍale

Synonyms

haste in one hand ; gṛhītvā taking ; tac-chūlam that spear ; tena with it ; eva indeed ; abhijaghāna struck ; tam him ; tad-ghātena by that blow ; prapatitaḥ fell ; mūrchitaḥ unconscious ; vāri-maṇḍale in the waters.

Translation

Catching the spear in one hand, Lord Kṛṣṇa threw it back at the demon. Wounded by the spear, the demon fell unconscious into the waters.

sahasotthāya deveśaṁ kiṣcid vyākula-mānasaḥ mūrdhnā tatāḍa pakṣīndraṁ sva-phaṇena phānī yathā

Synonyms

sahasā at once ; utthāya rising ; deveśam the Supreme Personality of Godhead ; kiṣcit a little ; vyākula-mānasaḥ agitated at heart ; mūrdhnā with his head ; tatāḍa struck ; pakṣīndram Garuḍa ; sva-phaṇena with his cvoils ; phānī a snake ; yathā as.

Translation

Suddenly getting up, and now a little agitated at heart, with his head the demon struck Lord Kṛṣṇa as with its hood a snake strikes Garuḍa.

paripūrṇatamaḥ sākṣāc chrī-kṛṣṇo bhagavān hariḥ kruddho murdhani vegena muṣṭinā taṁ tatāḍa ha

Synonyms

paripūrṇatamaḥ the Supreme Personality of Godhead ; sākṣāt directly ; śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ Śrī Kṛṣṇa ; bhagavān the Lord ; hariḥ Hari ; kruddhaḥ angry ; murdhani on the head ; vegena powerful ; muṣṭinā with a punch ; tam him ; tatāḍa struck ; ha indeed.

Translation

Now angry, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, ferociously punched the demon on his head.
Text 26

Verse text

sadyo vai nidhanaṁ gataḥ taj-jyotiḥ śrī-ghanaśyāme līnaṁ jātaṁ vidheha-rāṭ

Synonyms

kṛṣṇa of Śrī Kṛṣṇa ; muṣṭi-prahāreṇa by the punch ; sadyaḥ at once ; vai indeed ; nidhanam death ; gataḥ attained ; taj-jyotiḥ his light ; śrī-ghanaśyāme in the dark cloud of Lord Kṛṣṇa ; līnam merged ; jātam attained ; vidheha-rāṭ O king of Videha.

Translation

kṛṣṇa-muṣṭi-prahāreṇa O king of Videha, with that punch the demon died. The light from his body then merged into the dark monsoon cloud of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Verse text

evaṁ hatvā paṣcajanaṁ śaṅkhaṁ nītvā tad-aṅgajam mahārṇavān nirgato 'sau sahasā ratham āgamat

Synonyms

evam thus ; hatvā having killed ; paṣcajanam Pancajana ; śaṅkham the conch ; nītvā taking ; tad-aṅgajam born from his body ; mahārṇavāt from the ocean ; nirgataḥ came ; asau He ; sahasā at once ; ratham to the chariot ; āgamat came.

Translation

After killing the demon, Lord Kṛṣṇa took the demon's shell, left the great ocean, and returned to His chariot.
Text 28

Verse text

vāyu-vegena yānena rāma-kṛṣṇau manoharau jagmatuḥ śamanasyāpi dīrghaṁ samyamanīṁ purīm

Synonyms

vāyu-vegena as fast as the wond ; yānena with traveling ; rāma-kṛṣṇau Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma ; manoharau handsome ; jagmatuḥ went ; śamanasya of Yama ; api also ; dīrgham long ; samyamanīṁ purīm Samyamani Puri.

Translation

Traveling as fast as the wind for a long time, glorious Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma came to Samyamanī Purī, the city of Yamarāja.

Verse text

pāṣcajanya-dhvanir lokaṁ pracaṇḍo megha-ghoṣa-vat pūrayām āsa taṁ śrutvā cakampe sa-sabho yamaḥ

Synonyms

pāṣcajanya-dhvaniḥ with the sound of the Pancajana conchshell ; lokam the world ; pracaṇḍaḥ ferocious ; megha-ghoṣa-vat like thunder ; pūrayām āsa filled ; tam that ; śrutvā hearing ; cakampe trembled ; sa-sabhaḥ with his assembly ; yamaḥ Yamarāja.

Translation

Blowing the conchshell that had been Pa 241)cajana's outer body, powerful Lord Kṛṣṇa filled the world with a sound like thunder. When they heard it, Yamarāja and his assembly trembled.
Text 30

Verse text

narakeṣu nipātitāḥ yair yaiḥ śrutā dhvanis te te jagmur mokṣaṁ tu pāpinaḥ

Synonyms

catur-aśīti-lakṣeṣu eight million four hundred thousand ; narakeṣu into the hellish worlds ; nipātitāḥ fallen ; yaiḥ yaiḥ by whomever ; śrutā heard ; dhvaniḥ the sound ; te te they ; jagmuḥ attained ; mokṣam liberation ; tu indeed ; pāpinaḥ sinners.

Translation

catur-aśīti-lakṣeṣu Any of the sinners fallen in the eight million four hundred thousand hells there that heard that sound at once attained liberation.

Verse text

yamaḥ sadyo baliṁ nītvā papāta caraṇopānte dharṣitaḥ san kṛtāṣjaliḥ

Synonyms

yamaḥ Yama ; sadyaḥ at oince ; balim an offering ; nītvā bringing ; śrī-kṛṣṇa-baladevayoḥ to Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma ; papāta fell ; caraṇopānte at the feet ; dharṣitaḥ humbled ; san being ; kṛtāṣjaliḥ with folded hands.

Translation

śrī-kṛṣṇa-baladevayoḥ Bringing an offering in his folded hands, humble Yamarāja fell down at the feet of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma.
Text 32

Verse text

śrī-yama uvāca he hare he kṛpā-sindho rāma rāma mahā-bala paripūrṇatamau yuvām

Synonyms

śrī-yama uvāca Śrī yamarāja said ; he O ; hare Kṛṣṇa ; he O ; kṛpā-sindhaḥ ocean of mercy ; rāma O Balarāma ; rāma Balarāma ; mahā-bala very powerful ; asaṅkhya-brahmāṇḍa-patī the two master of numberless universes ; paripūrṇatamau the two Supreme Personalities of Godhead ; yuvām You.

Translation

asaṅkhya-brahmāṇḍa-patī Śrī Yamarāja said: O Kṛṣṇa, O ocean of mercy! O Balarāma! O powerful Balarāma! You are the two masters of numberless universes. You are the two Supreme Personalities of Godhead.

Verse text

devau purāṇau puruṣau mahāntau sarveśvarau sarva-jagaj-janeśau adyaiva sarvopari vartamānau girā nijājṣāṁ vadataṁ pareśau

Synonyms

devau Supreme Lords ; purāṇau ancient ; puruṣau Supreme Persons ; mahāntau great ; sarveśvarau the masters of all ; sarva-jagat of all universes ; jana of the peoples ; īśau the masters ; adya today ; eva indeed ; sarvopari above all ; vartamānau being ; girā with words ; nija own ; ājṣām command ; vadatam please speak ; pareśau two Lords.

Translation

You are the two ancient Supreme Persons, the masters of everything, the rulers of all beings in all the worlds, the two Supreme Lords who stand above all others. Please order me as You wish.

Verse text

śrī-bhagavān uvāca guru-putraṁ loka-pāla ānayasva mahā-mate rājyaṁ kuru yathānyāyāṁ mad-uktaṁ mānayan kvacit

Synonyms

śrī-bhagavān uvāca the Supreme Personality of Godhead said ; guru-putram the son of My guru ; loka-pāla O portector of the worlds ; ānayasva bring ; mahā-mate O noble-hearted one ; rājyam a kingdom ; kuru please do ; yathā as ; anyāyām —in another ; mat by Me ; uktam spoken ; mānayan honoring ; kvacit somewhere.

Translation

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O protector of the worlds, O noble-hearted one, bring to Me my guru's son. You should rule your kingdom by obeying My words.

Verse text

śrī-nārada uvāca tadaiva tenopānītaṁ guru-putraṁ hariḥ svayam gṛhītvāvantikam etya dadau śrī-gurave śiśum

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; tadā then ; eva indeed ; tena by him ; upānītam brought ; guru-putram the guru's son ; hariḥ Kṛṣṇa ; svayam personally ; gṛhītvā bringing ; avantikam near ; etya coming ; dadau gave ; śrī-gurave to His guru ; śiśum the boy.

Translation

To protect the cows, brāhmaṇas, devotees, demigods, Vedas, and the principles of religion, You have both taken birth in the Yādava dynasty.

pāṇḍavānāṁ hi kuśalaṁ draṣṭuṁ gaccha gajāhvayam śīghram āgaccha tān dṛṣṭvā sarvān dāna-pate bhavān

Śrī Akrūra said: Harassed by the Kauravas, the Pāṇḍavas have placed all their thoughts at Your lotus feet. Now that King Pāṇḍu is dead, no one but You can help them.

puspani the flowers ; manasat from Manasa-sarovara ; nitva taking ; cabditani with the sounds ; madhu-vrataih of bees ; aghraya smelling ; gandha for the fragrance ; lobhena with greed ; daduh gave ; te they ; janakaya to their father ; vai indeed.

Translation

From Manasa-sarovara, they took many flowers filled with the humming of bees. After greedily smelling them, they gave them to their father.

civa-puja tiras-krta asurim yonim apanna mudhas te janmabhis tribhih

Translation

ucchisti-krta-dosena The worship of Lord Siva became ruined by offering these already-smelled flowers. The foolish sons became demons for three births.

Sri Narada said: O king of Videha, Lord Krsna, the master of the three worlds, obtained His conch and other paraphernalia long ago by His own prowess.

rajahamsa-sama-dyutih Then one day he became proud and in his heart he said to himself: "I am the king of conchshells. I am effulgent as the king of swans. Lord Krsna personally holds me.

sri-krsno daksinavartam dadhmau mam vijaye sati yad durlabham cabdhi-putryah

Translation

sri-krsnasyadharamrtam dadhmau - blows; mam - me; vijaye - in victory; sati - being so; yat - what; durlabham - difficult to attain; ca - and; abdhi-putryah - for the goddess of fortune; sri-krsnasyadharamrtam - the nectar of Lord Krsna's lips. "When He is victorious, Sri Krsna points me to the south and makes a great sound through me. At that moment I drink the nectar of Lord Krsna's lips, which is diificult even for the goddess of fortune to obtain.

vaira-bhavena devecam punah prapto darecvarah jyotir linam tu devece vapur yasya kare babhau aho bhagyam viddhi tasya kim bhuyah crotum icchasi
