Śrī Kṛṣṇa's Entrance Into Mathurā

Text 1

Verse text

śrī-nārada uvāca harir akrūra-rāmābhyāṁ mathuropavanaṁ gataḥ yamunā-nikaṭaṁ sthitvā vari pītvā rathaṁ yayau

Synonyms

hariḥ Śrī Nārada said ; akrūra-rāmābhyām with Akrūra and Balarāma ; mathuropavanam to the graden of Mathurā ; gataḥ wnet ; yamunā-nikaṭam near the Yamunā ; sthitvā staying ; vari the water ; pītvā drinking ; ratham to the chariot ; yayau went

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Accompanied by Balarāma and Akrūra, Kṛṣṇa went to Mathurā's gardens by the Yamunā's shore, drank some water, and returned to the chariot.

akrūras tāv anujṣāpya snātuṁ śrī-yamunāṁ gataḥ nitya-naimittikaṁ kartuṁ viveśa vimale jale

Synonyms

akrūraḥ Akrūra ; tāv Them ; anujṣāpya obtaining permission ; snātum to bath ; śrī-yamunām to Śrī Yamunā ; gataḥ went ; nitya-naimittikam his regular bath ; kartum to do ; viveśa wntereed ; vimale the pure ; jale water.

Translation

Atter taking permission from Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, Akrūra went to the Yamunā and entered the water to take his regular bath.

jale cāgadha-gambhīre dadarśa rāma-kṛṣṇau tau vadantau gandinī-sutaḥ

Synonyms

jale in the water ; ca and ; agādha-gambhīre —very deep ; mahā-varta-samākule very turbulent ; dadarśa saw ; rāma Balarāma ; kṛṣṇau and Kṛṣṇa ; tau Them ; vadantau speaking ; gandinī-sutaḥ Akrūra.

Translation

mahā-varta-samākule In the deep and turbulent water Akrūra saw Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma conversing.

vismitas tau rathe 'paśyat punar vāri sthitau nṛpa dadarśa tatra sarpendraṁ kuṇḍalī-bhūtam āsthitam

Synonyms

vismitaḥ astonished ; tau Them ; rathe on the chariot ; apaśyat saw ; punaḥ again ; vāri in the water ; sthitau standing ; nṛpa O king ; dadarśa saw ; tatra there ; sarpendram the king of snakes ; kuṇḍalī-bhūtam coiled-up ; āsthitam situated.

Translation

O king, when he looked and saw Them both sitting on the chariot, Akrūra was very surprised. He looked again into the water and saw Ananta Śeṣa coiled again and again, . . .

tasyotsaṅge mahā-lokaṁ golokaṁ loka-vanditam govardhanādriṁ yamunāṁ vṛndāraṇyaṁ manoharam

Synonyms

tasya of Him ; utsaṅge on the lap ; mahā-lokam the great planet ; golokam Goloka ; loka-vanditam worshiped by the worlds ; govardhanādrim Govardhana Hill ; yamunām tye y ; vṛndāraṇyam Vṛndāvana ; manoharam beautiful.

Translation

On Śeṣa's lap he saw Vṛndāvana forest, the Yamunā, Govardhana Hill, and the transcendental realm of Goloka, which is worshiped by all the worlds.

jyotiṣaṁ maṇḍalaṁ prabhum paripūrṇatamaṁ sākṣāc chrī-kṛṣṇaṁ puruṣottamam

Translation

asaṅkhya-koṭi-mārtaṇḍa- On Śeṣa's lap Akrūra also saw Lord Kṛṣṇa, the perfect Supreme Personality of Godhead, glorious as countless millions of suns, . . .

rādhayā sahitaṁ devaṁ tatrākrūro dadarśa ha

Synonyms

koṭi millions ; manmatha of Kāmadevas ; lāvaṇyam handsomeness ; rāsa-maṇḍala-madhya-gam in the middle of theb rāsa-dance circle ; rādhayā with Rādhā ; sahitam with ; devam the Lord ; tatra there ; akrūraḥ Akrūra ; dadarśa saw ; ha indeed.

Translation

koṭi-manmatha-lāvaṇyaṁ rāsa-maṇḍala-madhya-gam . . . and more handsome than millions of Kāmadevas, standing with Rādhā in the rāsa-dance circle.

jṣātvā kṛṣṇaṁ paraṁ brahma natvā natvā punaḥ punaḥ kṛtāṣjali-puṭo 'krūraḥ stutiṁ cakre 'ti-harṣitaḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Aware that Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Akrūra bowed down again and again and again. Filled with joy, he folded his hands and spoke many prayers.

śrī-akrūra uvāca namaḥ śrī-kṛṣṇacandrāya paripūrṇatamāya ca goloka-pataye namaḥ

Translation

asaṅkhyāṇḍādhipataye Śrī Akrūra said: Obeisances to Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, the perfect Supreme Personality of Godhead! Obeisances to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the master of numberless universes, the master of Goloka!

śrī-rādhā-pataye tubhyaṁ vrajādhīśāya te namaḥ namaḥ śrī-nanda-putrāya yaśodā-nandanāya ca

Translation

devakī-suta govinda vāsudeva jāgat-pate yadūttama jagan-nātha pāhi māṁ puruṣottama

Synonyms

Translation

O son of Devakī and Vasudeva, O Govinda, O best of the Yādavas, O master of the universes, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, please protect me!

vāṇī sadā te guṇa-varṇane syāt karṇau kathāyāṁ mama doś ca karmaṇi manaḥ sadā tvac-caraṇāravindayor dṛśau sphurad-dhāma-viveśa-darśane

Synonyms

vāṇī words ; sadā always ; te of You ; guṇa-varṇane describing the virtues ; syāt is ; karṇau the ears ; kathāyām in the narrations ; mama my ; doś arms ; ca and ; karmaṇi in the works ; manaḥ mind ; sadā always ; tvac-caraṇāravindayoḥ in Your lotusa feet ; dṛśau eyes ; sphurad-dhāma-viveśa-darśane in seeing Your glory.

Translation

May my words always describe Your transcendental qualities, my ears always hear descriptions of You, my arms always work for You, my mind always think of Your lotus feet, and my eyes always see the splendid glory of Your transcendental form.

Verse text

śrī-nārada uvāca evaṁ saṁstuvatas tasya paśyato vismitasya ca tatraivāntardadhe kṛṣṇaḥ sa-loko bhagavān prabhuḥ

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; evam thus ; saṁstuvataḥ pryaing ; tasya of him ; paśyataḥ gazing ; vismitasya astonished ; ca and ; tatra there ; eva indeed ; antardadhe disappeared ; kṛṣṇaḥ Lord Kṛṣṇa ; sa-lokaḥ with His realm ; bhagavān prabhuḥ the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: As astonished Akrūra was speaking these prayers, the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa in His transcendental realm suddenly disappeared.

natvā taṁ ca tadākrūraḥ kṛtvā naimittikaṁ vidhim jṣātvā kṛṣṇaṁ paraṁ brahma vismito ratham āyayau

Synonyms

Translation

Bowing down, finishing his regular duties, and now acutely aware of Lord Kṛṣṇa's divinity, astonished Akrūra returned to the chariot.

dinātyaye rāma-kṛṣṇāv anayad gandinī-sutaḥ rathena vāyu-vegena

Synonyms

dina of the day ; atyaye at the end ; rāma-kṛṣṇāv Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma ; anayat led ; gandinī-sutaḥ Akrūra ; rathena by chariot ; vāyu wind ; vegena with the speed ; snigdha gambhīra-nādinā—with a sound like thunder.

Translation

snigdha-gambhīra-nādinā Driving a chariot that rumbled like thunder and went as fast as the wind, at the day's end Akrūra took Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma to the gardens outside Mathurā.

purasyopavane tatra vīkṣya nandaṁ yadūttamaḥ akrūraṁ prāha vihasan megha-gambhīrayā girā

Synonyms

purasya of ther city ; upavane in the gardens ; tatra there ; vīkṣya seeing ; nandam Nanda ; yadūttamaḥ the best of the Yādavas ; akrūram to Akrūra ; prāha said ; vihasan smiling ; megha-gambhīrayā like thunder ; girā with words.

Translation

When He saw Nanda there in Mathurā's gardens, Lord Kṛṣṇa smiled and spoke to Akrūra with words like thunder.

Verse text

śrī-bhagavān uvāca mathurāyāṁ hi gantavyaṁ bhavatā sva-rathena vai gopālaiḥ sahitaḥ paścād āgamiṣyāmi mānada

Synonyms

śrī-bhagavān uvāca the Supreme Personality of Godhead said ; mathurāyām in Mathurā ; hi indeed ; gantavyam should be gone ; bhavatā by you ; sva-rathena by your chariot ; vai indeed ; gopālaiḥ with the gopas ; sahitaḥ with ; paścāt after ; āgamiṣyāmi I will come ; mānada O respectful one.

Translation

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Humble Akrūra, please take your chariot inside Mathurā City. Accompanied by the gopas, I will enter the city later.

śrī-akrūra uvāca deva-deva jagan-nātha govinda puruṣottama sahāgrajaḥ sa-gopālo gaccha me mandiraṁ prabho

Synonyms

śrī-akrūra uvāca Śrī Akrūra said ; deva-deva O master of the dfemigods ; jagan-nātha O master of the universes ; govinda O Govinda ; puruṣottama O Supreme Person ; sahāgrajaḥ with Your elder brother ; sa-gopālaḥ with the gopas ; gaccha please ; me my ; mandiram home ; prabhaḥ O Lord.

Translation

Śrī Akrūra said: O master of the demigods, O master of the universes, O Govinda, O Supreme Person, taking with You Your elder brother and Your gopa friends, please agree to visit my home.

pavitrī-kuru mad-gṛham tvaṁ vinā na gamiṣyāmi mandiraṁ svaṁ jāgat-pate

Synonyms

pada feet ; aravinda lotus ; rajasā with the dust ; pavitrī-kuru please purify ; mad-gṛham my home ; tvam You ; vinā except for ; na not ; gamiṣyāmi I will go ; mandiram home ; svam own ; jāgat-pate O master of the worlds.

Translation

padāravinda-rajasā Please purify my home with the pollen of Your lotus feet. O master of the worlds, I will not return to my home unless I can take You with me.

śrī-bhagavān uvāca gṛhaṁ tavāgamiṣyāmi hatvā vai yādavāhitam sa-balo bandhavaiḥ sārdhaṁ kariṣyāmi tava priyam

Synonyms

śrī-bhagavān uvāca the Supreme Personality of Godhead said ; gṛham home ; tava your ; āgamiṣyāmi I will come ; hatvā having killed ; vai indeed ; yādavāhitam the person that harms the Yādavas ; sa-balaḥ with Balarāma ; bandhavaiḥ with My kinsmen ; sārdham with ; kariṣyāmi I will do ; tava of You ; priyam the favor.

Translation

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: After I have killed the king that harms the Yādavas, I will visit your home. Accompanied by Balarāma and My kindsmen, I will satisfy your desire.

śrī-nārada uvāca atha tatra sthite kṛṣṇe so 'krūro mathurāṁ gataḥ nivedya cedaṁ kaṁśāya tataḥ sva-bhavanaṁ yayau

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; atha then ; tatra there ; sthite situated ; kṛṣṇe Kṛṣṇa ; saḥ He ; akrūraḥ Akrūra ; mathurām to Mathurā ; gataḥ gone ; nivedya informing ; ca and ; idam this ; kaṁśāya to Kaṁsa ; tataḥ then ; sva-bhavanam to his home ; yayau went.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Leaving Lord Kṛṣṇa there, Akrūra entered Mathurā, informed King Kaṁsa of what had happened, and then returned to his home.

athāparāhne sa-balaṁ govindaṁ bālakaiḥ purīm draṣṭum abhyuditaṁ vīkṣya nando vākyam athābravīt

Synonyms

atha then ; aparāhne in the afternoon ; sa-balam with Balarāma ; govindam Kṛṣṇa ; bālakaiḥ with the boys ; purīm the city ; draṣṭum to see ; abhyuditam eager ; vīkṣya seeing ; nandaḥ Nanda ; vākyam words ; atha then ; abravīt spoke.

Translation

Noticing that afternoon that Kṛṣṇa, Balarāma, and the boys were eager to see Mathurā City, Nanda spoke the following words.

Verse text

ārjavena purīṁ vīkṣyā- gantavyaṁ bhavatā kila na gokulaṁ viddhi cainaṁ kaṁsa-rājye mahā-bhaye

Synonyms

ārjavena in a strauightforward way ; purīm the city ; vīkṣya seeing ; āgantavyam should be returned ; bhavatā by You ; kila indeed ; na not ; gokulam Gokula ; viddhi know ; ca and ; enam this ; kaṁsa-rājye the kingdom of Kaṁsa ; mahā-bhaye very fearful.

Translation

Look at the city and then quickly return. Know that this is not Gokula. This is the fearful kingdom of Kaṁsa.

tathāstu coktvā bhagavān vṛddhair nanda-praṇoditaiḥ gopālair bālakaiḥ sārdhaṁ sa-balo gatavān purīm

Synonyms

prāsādair gagana-sparśair śobhitāṁ durga-samyuktāṁ devadhānīm iva sthitām

Translation

hema-ratna-khacid-gṛhaiḥ . . . which was surrounded by high walls, and filled with mansions of gold and jewels and great palaces that touched the sky, which was like a great city in the celestial planets, . . .

kālindīṁ ratna-sopānaiś alakām iva śobhāḍhyāṁ divya-nārī-narair yutam

Synonyms

kālindīm the Yamunā ; ratna with jewel ; sopānaiś stairs ; calad-ūrmi-kutūhalaiḥ with turbulent waves ; alakām locks of hair ; iva like ; śobhāḍhyām beautiful ; divya-nārī-naraiḥ beauitful men and women ; yutam with.

Translation

calad-ūrmi-kutūhalaiḥ . . . which was filled with handsome men and beautiful women, and decorated with jewel staircases leading down to the Yamunā's turbulent waves splendid as black locks of hair.

prekṣan chrī-mathurāṁ kṛṣṇo dhanināṁ mandirāṇi ca paśyan gopālakaiḥ sārdhaṁ rāja-mārgaṁ viveśa ha

Synonyms

prekṣan looking ; śrī-mathurām at Śrī Mathurā ; kṛṣṇaḥ Kṛṣṇa ; dhaninām of the wealthy ; mandirāṇi the mansions ; ca and ; paśyan seeing ; gopālakaiḥ the gopas ; sārdham with ; rāja-mārgam the royal road ; viveśa entered ; ha indeed.

Translation

As they gazed at the palaces of the wealthy and the other opulences of Mathurā, Kṛṣṇa and the gopas started to walk on the king's road.

śrutvāgataṁ taṁ vasudeva-nandanaṁ bahuśrutā vai mathurā-purāṅganāḥ tyaktvātha karmāṇi visṛjya tāḥ śiśūn draṣṭuṁ vyadhāvann udadhiṁ yathāpagāḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Hearing that Vasudeva's son had come, the learned women of Mathurā at once left their children and all their household duties and ran to see Kṛṣṇa as rivers run into the ocean.

kāścit tu harmyāt kila jāla-deśāt kuḍyāt tu kaścit paṭato gavākṣāt vinirgatā dvāra-kapāṭa-deśāt tac cātvarāt taṁ dadṛśuḥ purandhryaḥ

Translation

Some from palaces, some from behind latticeworks, some from the tops of walls, some from behind curtains, some from windows, some from doorways, and some from courtyards, the women of Mathurā gazed at Lord Kṛṣṇa.

ekaṁ calat-kuntalam ānane sve kim agra-gānāṁ tu manāṁsi hartum paścāt kṛtaṁ mauli-tale dadhānaṁ kiṁ pṛṣṭha-gānāṁ haraṇaṁ dvitīyam pītāmbarārdhaṁ balinaṁ sphurat kaṭāv ardhaṁ tad-aṁse jalade yathā taḍit padmaṁ kare sve hṛdi vaijayantīṁ srajaṁ dadhānaṁ vasudeva-nandanam vilokya sarvā mumuhuḥ pura-striyo rājann asaṅkhyāṇḍa-patiṁ parāt param

Translation

vilola-pāṭhīna-navīna-kuṇḍalam bālārka-hemāṅgada-bāhu-maṇḍalaṁ O king, as they gazed at Lord Kṛṣṇa, the master of numberless universes, His face decorated in the front with moving locks of hair and in the back with a glittering crown, wearing a yellow cloth wrapped around His waist and over His shoulder, splendid as a dark cloud with a lightning flash, a vaijayantī galrand on His chest and a lotus in His hand, wearing swinging shark-shaped earrings and golden armlets splendid as the rising sun, and stealing their hearts as He walked before Him, all the women of Mathurā City fell hopelessly in love with Him.

śrī-purandhrya ūcuḥ aho vṛndāvanaṁ ramyaṁ yatra sannihito hy ayam dhanyā gopa-gaṇāḥ sarve paśyanty enaṁ manoharam

Translation

The women of Mathurā City said: Ah, all the gopas in beautiful Vṛndāvana are very fortunate again and again to see such a handsome person.

dhanyā gopa-ramaṇyas tās tābhiḥ kiṁ sukṛtaṁ kṛtam pibanti yā rāsa-raṅge muhuś cāsyādharāmṛtam

Synonyms

dhanyāḥ fortunate ; gopa-ramaṇyaḥ the gs ; tāḥ they ; tābhiḥ with them ; kim what? ; sukṛtam pious deeds ; kṛtam done ; pibanti drink ; yāḥ who ; rāsa-raṅge in the rāsa dance ; muhuś again and again ; ca and ; asya of Him ; adhara of the lips ; amṛtam the nectar.

Translation

The gopīs are very fortunate. What pious deeds must they have performed that in the rāsa-dance they could again and again drink the nectar of Kṛṣṇa's lips?

Translation

gopālānumatenaiva Śrī Nārada said: To please the gopas, Lord Kṛṣṇa spoke the following words to a washerman and cloth-dyer that was frantically going on the king's road.

dehi no mitra vāsāṁsi rucirāṇi mahā-mate dātus te hi paraṁ sreyo bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ

Inflamed by Lord Kṛṣṇa's words as fire is inflamed by ghee, the washerman, who was a great demon and servant of Kaṁsa, spoke to Lord Kṛṣṇa in the middle of the road.

rajaka uvāca idṛśāny eva vastrāṇi pitṛbhir vaḥ pitāmahaiḥ dhāritāni kim udvṛttās te tu kaupīna-dhārakāḥ

Translation

O king of Videha, then an effulgence left the washerman's dead body and entered the dark cloud of Lord Kṛṣṇa. At once the washerman's assistants dropped the great treasury of opulent gamrnets and fled in all directions as monsoon clouds flee with the coming of autumn. Calmly standing there, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma took what they liked from the pile of garments.

Śrī Bahulāśva said: Although my heart has already heard Lord Kṛṣṇa's sacred pastimes from your mouth, it thirsts to hear them again. Although it has already drunk this nectar, it thirsts to drink it again.

nāhaṁ bibharmi tvāṁ duṣṭāṁ uṣatīṁ para-veṣma-gām strī-lobhī bibhryāt sītāṁ rāmo nāhaṁ bhaje punaḥ

Translation

I will not maintain you, a sinner that returns at dawn from another's house. Rāmacandra, who is greedy to enjoy with His wife, may continue to maintain His Sītā, but I am not like Him.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: In his previous life he was a weaver in Mithilā City. A great devotee of the Lord and an expert weaver, on King Śiradhvaja's order he made very fine garments for Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa to wear on Lord Rāma's wedding day.

ahaṁ sva-hastair vastrāṇi tayor aṅgeṣu sarvataḥ paridhānaṁ kārayāmi cakre cetthaṁ manoratham

Synonyms

Translation

In his heart he desired, "I wish with my own hands I could make garments to place on Their limbs."

manasāpi varaṁ rāmo dadau tasmā aśeṣa-vit dvāparānte bhārate ca bhaviṣyati manorathaḥ

Translation

In His heart all-knowing Lord Rāma blessed him that his desire would be fulfilled in Bharata-varṣa at the end of Dvāpara-yuga.

śrī-rāmasya varāt so 'yaṁ mathurāyāṁ babhūva ha tayor veṣaṁ kārayitvā tat-sārūpyaṁ jagāma ha

Translation

By the blessings of Lord Rāma he took birth in Mathurā City. He personally made garments for Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, and he attained a transcendental form like Theirs.

śrī-bahulāśva uvāca sudāmnā malinā brahman kiṁ kṛtaṁ sukṛtaṁ vada yad-gṛhaṁ jagmatuḥ sākṣād rāma-kṛṣṇau manoharau

Synonyms

śrī-bahulāśva uvāca Śrī Bahulāśva said ; sudāmnā Sudama ; malinā the florist ; brahman O brāhmaṇa ; kim what? ; kṛtam done ; sukṛtam pious deed ; vada please tell ; yad-gṛham in whose home ; jagmatuḥ went ; sākṣāt directly ; rāma-kṛṣṇau Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma ; manoharau *hansome.

Translation

Śrī Bahulāśva said: O brāhmaṇa, what pious deeds did the florist Sudāmā perform that handsome Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma personally came to his home? Please describe that to me.

śrī-nārada uvāca rāja-rāja-vanaṁ ramyaṁ nāmnā caitrarathaṁ śubham tasya vai puṣpa-baṭuko hemamālīti-nāma-bhāk

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; rāja-rāja-vanam the forest of Kuvera ; ramyam beautriful ; nāmnā —by name ; caitraratham Caitraratha ; śubham glorious ; tasya of that ; vai indeed ; puṣpa-baṭukaḥ a puspa-batuka ; hemamālī Hemamali ; iti thus ; nāma-bhāk *named.

Translation

In Kuvera's beautiful Caitraratha gardens there was a florist named Hemamālī.

viṣṇu-bhakti-rataḥ śānto dānī sat-saṅga-kṛn mahān śrī-viṣṇudeva-prāpty-arthaṁ deva-pūjāṁ cakāra ha

Synonyms

viṣṇu-bhakti-rataḥ devoted to Lord Viṣṇu ; śāntaḥ peaceful ; dānī generous ; sat-saṅga-kṛn asscoiating with devotees ; mahān noble ; deva-pūjām the worship of the demigods ; cakāra did ; ha *indeed.

Translation

He was peaceful, generous, and devoted to Lord Viṣṇu. He associated with saintly persons. He worshiped Lord Śiva to attain the company of Lord Viṣṇu.

samāḥ paṣca-sahasrāṇi padmānāṁ ca śata-trayaṁ nityaṁ nītvā dhūrjaṭaye puro dhṛtvā nanāma ha

Synonyms

samāḥ years ; paṣca-sahasrāṇi five thousdand ; padmānām of lotus flowers ; ca and ; śata-trayam three hundred ; nityam always ; nītvā taking ; dhūrjaṭaye to Lord Śiva ; puraḥ before ; dhṛtvā taking ; nanāma bowed ; ha *certainly.

Translation

For five thousand years he daily took three hundred lotus flowers, placed them before Lord Śiva, and bowed down.

ekadāti-prasanno 'bhūt try-abjakaḥ karuṇā-nidhiḥ mālākāra mahā-buddhe varaṁ brūhīty uvāca ha

Synonyms

ekadā one day ; ati-prasannaḥ very pleased ; abhūt became ; try-abjakaḥ Lord śiva ; karuṇā-nidhiḥ an ocean of mercy ; mālākāra O garland-maker ; mahā-buddhe intelligent ; varam a blessing ; brūhi ask ; iti thus ; uvāca said ; ha *indeed.

Translation

Lord Śiva, who is an ocean of mercy, was very pleased. One day he said, "Intelligent florist, ask for a boon."

hemamālī tadā devaṁ namaskṛtya kṛtāṣjaliḥ pradakṣiṇī-kṛtya puraḥ sthitvā prāha natānanaḥ

hemamālī Hemamali ; tadā then ; devam to the Lord ; namaskṛtya bowing ; kṛtāṣjaliḥ with folded hands ; pradakṣiṇī-kṛtya circumambulating ; puraḥ before ; sthitvā standing ; prāha said ; natānanaḥ *his head bowed.

Translation

With folded hands bowing before Lord Śiva, circumambulating him, and standing before him with bowed head, Hemamālī spoke.

śrī-hemamāly uvāca paripūrṇatamaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ kvacin no gṛham āgatam paśyāmi dṛgbhyāṁ taṁ sākṣāt tvad-vareṇa bhaved idam

śrī-hemamāly uvāca Śrī Hemamali said ; paripūrṇatamam the Supreme Personality of Godhead ; kṛṣṇam Kṛṣṇa ; kvacin somewhere ; naḥ of us ; gṛham home ; āgatam come ; paśyāmi I see ; dṛgbhyām with both eyes ; tam Him ; sākṣāt directly ; tvad-vareṇa by Your blessing ; bhavet may be ; idam *this.

Translation

Śrī Hemamālī said: By your blessings may I be able to see with my own eyes the perfect Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa, enter my home.

śrī-mahādeva uvāca dvāparānte bhārate ca mathurāyāṁ mahā-mate manorathas te sa-phalo bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ

śrī-mahādeva uvāca Lord Śuva said ; dvāparānte at the end of Dvbapara-yuga ; bhārate in Bharata-varsa ; ca and ; mathurāyām in Mathurā ; mahā-mate O noble-hearted one ; manorathaḥ the desire ; te of you ; sa-phalaḥ fruitful ; bhaviṣyati will be ; na no ; saṁśayaḥ *doubt.

Translation

Lord Śiva said: O noble-hearted one, at the end of Dvāpara-yuga, in Bharata-varṣa, in Mathurā City, your desire will bear fruit. Of this there is no doubt.

śrī-nārada uvāca maheśvara-vareṇāsau hemamālī mahā-manāḥ mālākāro dvāparānte sudāmā sambabhūva ha

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; maheśvara of Lord śuva ; vareṇa by the blessings ; asau he ; hemamālī Hemamali ; mahā-manāḥ noble-hearted ; mālākāraḥ florist ; dvāparānte at the end of Dvapara-yuga ; sudāmā Sudama ; sambabhūva became ; ha *indeed.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: By Lord Śiva's blessings, at the end of Dvāpara-yuga noble-hearted Hemamālī was born as the florist Sudāmā.

tasmād asya gṛhaṁ sākṣāj jagmatū rāma-keśavau śiva-vākyam ṛtaṁ kartuṁ kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi

Synonyms

tasmāt because of that ; asya of him ; gṛham to the home ; sākṣāj directlky ; jagmatū came ; rāma-keśavau Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma ; śiva-vākyam the words of Lord Śiva ; ṛtam true ; kartum to do ; kim what? ; bhūyaḥ more ; śrotum to hear ; icchasi *you wish.

Translation

To keep Lord Śiva's promise, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma entered Sudāmā's home. What more do you wish to hear? .pa
