Verse text

atha bāla-dhvaniṁ śrutvā rakṣakāḥ samupasthitāḥ ūcuḥ kaṁsāya vīrāya gatvā tad-rāja-mandiram

Synonyms

atha then ; bāla of an infant ; dhvanim the sound ; śrutvā hearing ; rakṣakāḥ the guards ; samupasthitāḥ standing by ; ūcuḥ said ; kaṁsāya to Kaṁsa ; vīrāya the warrior ; gatvā having gone ; tad-rāja-mandiram *to his royal palace.

Translation

Hearing the sounds of an infant, the guards went to the royal palace and told the warrior Kaṁsa.

sūti-gṛhaṁ tvaraṁ prāgāt kaṁso vai bhayakāturaḥ svasātha bhrātaraṁ prāha rudatī dīnavat satī

Synonyms

sūti-gṛham to the maternity room ; tvaram quickly ; prāgāt went ; kaṁsaḥ Kaṁsa ; vai indeed ; bhayaka with fear ; āturaḥ overcome ; svasā the sister ; atha then ; bhrātaram to the brother ; prāha said ; rudatī weeping ; dīnavat like a wretched person ; satī *the chaste woman.

Translation

Overcome with fear, Kaṁsa rushed to the maternity room. Weeping like the most wretched person, the chaste sister (Devakī) spoke to her brother (Kaṁsa).

śrī-devaky uvāca sutām ekaṁ dehi me tvaṁ putreṣu pramṛteṣu ca striyaṁ hantuṁ na yogyo 'si bhrātas tvaṁ dīna-vatsalaḥ

Synonyms

śrī-devakī uvāca Śrī Devakī said ; sutām daughter ; ekām one ; dehi give ; me to me ; tvam you ; putreṣu sons ; pramṛteṣu died ; ca and ; striyam a woman ; hantum to kill ; na not ; yogyaḥ is right ; asi you are ; bhrātaḥ O brother ; tvam you ; dīna to they who suffer ; vatsalaḥ *kind.

Translation

Śrī Devakī said: Now that my sons are dead, please give me this one daughter. O brother, it is not right for you to kill a girl. You are kind to they who are miserable.

te 'nujāhaṁ hata-sutā kārāgāre nipātitā dātum arhasi kalyāṇa kalyāṇīṁ tanujāṁ ca me

Synonyms

te of you ; anujā the younger sister ; aham I am ; hata killed ; sutā sons ; kārāgāre in a prison cell ; nipātitā thrown ; dātum to give ; arhasi you deserve ; kalyāṇa O noble one ; kalyāṇīm beautiful ; tanujām daughter ; ca also ; me *to me.

Translation

I am your younger sister. You killed my sons and threw me in a prison cell. O noble one, please give this beautiful daughter to me.

śrī-nārada uvāca aśru-mukhyā mohitayā samācchādyātmajaṁ bahu prārthito 'ṅkād vinirbhartsya tāṁ sa acicchide khalaḥ

Synonyms

śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; aśru tears ; mukhyā face ; mohitayā bewildered ; samācchādya covering ; ātmajām daughter ; bahu many times ; prārthitaḥ begged ; aṅkāt from the lap ; vinirbhartsya rebuking ; tām her ; saḥ he ; ācicchide attacked ; khalaḥ *the demon.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Bewildered, and her face covered with tears, Devakī pleased and tried to hold the child in her lap. The demon Kaṁsa rebuked her and grabbed the child.

kusaṅga-nitaraḥ pāpaḥ khalo yadu-kulādhamaḥ svasuḥ sutāṁ śilā-pṛṣṭhe gṛhītvāṅghryor nyapātayat

Synonyms

ku-saṅga-nitaraḥ whose friends were demons ; pāpaḥ sinful ; khalaḥ demon ; yadu-kulādhamaḥ the lowest of the Yādavas ; svasuḥ of his sister ; sutām the daughter ; śilā-pṛṣṭhe on a stole slab ; gṛhītva brabbing ; aṅghryoḥ by the feet ; nyapātayat *threw.

Translation

Then the sinful demon Kaṁsa, the lowest of the Yādavas, his friends all demons, holding his sister's daughter by her feet, threw her against a stone slab.

kaṁsa-hastāt samutpatya tvaraṁ sā cāmbare gatā śata-patre rathe divye sahasra-haya-sevite

Synonyms

kaṁsa of Kaṁsa ; hastāt from the hand ; samutpatya rising ; tvaram quickly ; she ; ca also ; ambare to the sky ; gatā went ; śata-patre a hundred-petal lotus ; rathe on a chariot ; divye splendid ; sahasra thousand ; haya horses ; sevite *served.

Translation

Form Kaṁsa's hand the girl flew into the sky and entered a splendid hundred-petal-lotus chariot pulled by a thousand horses.

cāmarāndolite śubhre sthitādṛśyata divya-dṛk sāyudhāṣṭa-bhujā māyā pārṣadaiḥ parisevitā śata-sūrya-pratīkāśā kaṁsam āha ghana-svanā

Synonyms

cāmara with cāmaras ; āndolite moved ; śubhre splendid ; sthita situated ; adṛśyata was seen ; divya divine ; dṛk appearance ; sa with ; āyudha weapons ; aṣṭa eight ; bhujā arms ; māyā the goddess Yogamāyā ; pārṣadaiḥ by associates ; parisevitā served ; śata a hundred ; sūrya suns ; pratīkāśā splendor ; kaṁsam to Kaṁsa ; āha said ; ghana-svanā *with a voice like thunder.

Translation

He saw her standing on a splendid chariot with moving cāmaras. Then Goddess Yogamāyā, served by many attendants, her glorious form splendid as a hundred suns, her eight arms holding weapons, and her voice like thunder, spoke to Kaṁsa.

śrī-yogamāyovāca paripūrṇatamaḥ sākṣāc chrī-kṛṣṇo bhagavān svayam jātaḥ kva vā tu te hantā vṛthā dīnāṁ dunoṣi vai

Synonyms

śrī-yogamāyā uvāca Śrī Yogamāyā said ; paripūrṇatamaḥ sākṣāt the original Supreme Personality of Godhead ; śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ Śrī Kṛṣṇa bhagavān—Lord ; svayam personally ; jātaḥ born ; kva where? ; or ; tu indeed ; te of you ; hantā the killer ; vṛthā uselessly ; dīnām this poor girl ; dunoṣi you trouble ; vai *certainly.

Translation

Śrī Yogamāyā said: Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, is already born. Where is He born? He will kill you. You torture this poor girl in vain.

śrī-nārada uvāca ity uktvā taṁ tato devī gatā vindhyācale girau yogamāyā bhagavatī bahu-nāmā babhūva ha

Synonyms

śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; iti thus ; uktvā speaking ; tam to him ; tataḥ then ; devī the goddess ; gatā went ; vindhyācale to the Vindhya Hills ; girau on a hill ; yogamāyā Yogamāyā ; bhagavatī goddess ; bahu many ; nāmā names ; babhūva became ; ha *indeed.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: After saying this, the goddess went to the Vindhya hills. There goddess Yogamāyā assumed many names.

atha kaṁso vismito 'bhūc chrutvā mātā-vacaḥ param devakīṁ vasudevaṁ ca mocayām āsa bandhanāt

Synonyms

atha then ; kaṁsaḥ Kaṁsa ; vismitaḥ astonished ; abhūt became ; śrutvā hearing ; mātā of his mother ; vacaḥ the words ; param then ; devakīm Devakī ; vasudevam Vasudeva ; ca and ; mocayām āsa released ; bandhanāt *from bondage.

Translation

At this Kaṁsa became astonished. Listening to his mother's words, he released Vasudeva and Devakī from their bonds.

kaṁsa uvāca pāpo 'haṁ pāpa-karmāhaṁ khalo yadu-kulādhamaḥ yuṣmat-putra-prahantāraṁ kṣamadhvaṁ me kṛtaṁ bhuvi

Synonyms

kaṁsaḥ uvāca Kaṁsa said ; pāpaḥ sinful ; aham I am ; pāpa sinful ; karmā deeds ; aham I am ; khalaḥ a demon ; yadu-kula of the Yadu family ; adhamaḥ the lowest ; yuṣmat of you ; putra the sons ; prahantāram the killer ; kṣamadhvam please forgive ; me by me ; kṛtam done ; bhuvi *in the world.

Translation

Kaṁsa said: I am a sinner. I have done many sins. I am a demon. I am the lowest of the Yādavas. Please forgive what I have done in this world. (Please forgive) the killer of your sons.

he svasaḥ śṛnu me śaure manye kāla-kṛtaṁ tv idam yena niścalyamāno vā vāyuneva ghanāvaliḥ

Synonyms

he svasaḥ O sister ; śṛnu listen ; me to me ; śaure O Vasudeva ; manye I think ; kāla by time ; kṛtam done ; tu certainly ; idam this ; yena by which ; niścalyamānaḥ immovable ; or ; vāyunā by the wind ; iva like ; ghana of clouds ; āvaliḥ *a host.

Translation

O sister, hear me. O Vasudeva, I think this was all done by time, which, as the wind moves the clouds, moves what cannot be moved.

viśvasto 'haṁ deva-vākye devās te 'pi mṛṣā-giraḥ na jānāmi kva me śatrur jātaḥ kau kathito 'nayā

viśvastaḥ believed ; aham I ; deva of the demigods ; vākye in the words ; devāḥ the demigods ; te they ; api also ; mṛṣā false ; giraḥ words ; na not ; jānāmi I know ; kva where ; me of me ; śatruḥ the enemy ; jātaḥ born ; kau on the earth ; kathitaḥ said ; anayā *by her.

Translation

I believed the words of the demigods. The demigods also lie. She said my enemy is already born on the earth. Where? I don't know.

śrī-nārada uvāca itthaṁ kaṁsas tad-aṅghryoś ca patito 'śru-mukho rudan cakāra sevāṁ paramāṁ sauhṛdaṁ darśayaṁs tayoḥ

Synonyms

śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; ittham in this way ; kaṁsaḥ Kaṁsa ; tad-aṅghryoḥ at his feet ; ca also ; patitaḥ fallen ; aśru tears ; mukhaḥ face ; rudan weeping ; cakāra did ; sevām service ; paramām great ; sauhṛdam friendship ; darśayaṁḥ showing ; tayoḥ *to them.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Weeping, and his face covered with tears, Kaṁsa fell at their feet. He rendered great service to them and he showed friendship to them.

aho śrī-kṛṣṇacandrasya paripūrṇatama-prabhoḥ dāna-dakṣaiḥ kaṭākṣaiś ca kiṁ na syād bhūmi-maṇḍale

Synonyms

ahaḥ oh ; śrī-kṛṣṇacandrasya of Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra ; paripūrṇatama-prabhoḥ the Supreme Personality of Godhead ; dāna charity ; dakṣaiḥ expert ; kaṭākṣaiḥ with sidelong glances ; ca also ; kim whether ; na not ; syāt may be ; bhūmi-maṇḍale *on the circle of the earth.

Translation

Ah, will the charitable glances of Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, not come to the circle of the earth?

prātaḥ-kāle tadā kaṁsaḥ pralambādīn mahāsurān samāhūya khalas tebhyo 'vadad uktaṁ ca māyayā

Synonyms

prātaḥ morning ; kāle at the time ; tadā then ; kaṁsaḥ Kaṁsa ; pralamba-ādīn headed by Pralamba ; mahā great ; asurān demons ; samāhūya calling ; khalaḥ the demon ; tebhyaḥ to them ; avadat spoke ; uktam said ; ca and ; māyayā *by Yogamāyā.

Translation

Early in the morning the demon Kaṁsa called together the great demons headed by Pralambāsura and told them what Yogamāyā said.

kaṁsa uvāca jāto me hy anta-kṛd bhūmau kathito yogamāyayā anirdaśān nidarśāṁs ca śiśūn yūyaṁ haniṣyatha

kaṁsaḥ uvāca Kaṁsa said ; jātaḥ born ; me of me ; hi indeed ; anta the end ; kṛt doing ; bhūmau on the earth ; kathitaḥ spoken ; yogamāyayā by Yogamāyā ; anirdaśān younger than ten days ; nidarśān older than ten days ; ca and ; śiśūn infants ; yūyam you ; haniṣyatha *should kill.

Translation

Kaṁsa said: Yogamāyā said the person that will bring my end is already born on the earth. Therefore all of you please kill all infants, whether they are younger or older than ten days.

daityā ūcuḥ sajjasya dhanuṣo yuddhe bhavatā dvandva-yodhinā tāṅkārenodgatā devā manyase taiḥ kathaṁ bhayam

Synonyms

daityāḥ the demons ; ūcuḥ said ; sajjasya preparing ; dhanuṣaḥ bows ; yuddhe in the battle ; bhavatā by you ; dvandva-yodhinā in a duel ; tāṅkārena with the sound of the bow udgatāḥ—come ; devāḥ the demigods ; manyase you think ; taiḥ by them ; katham how? ; bhayam *fear.

Translation

The demons said: When you ready your bow for a fight, the twang of its string makes the demigods flee. Why do you fear them?

go-vipra-sādhu-śrutayo devā dharmādayaḥ pare viṣṇoś ca tanavo hy eṣāṁ nāśe daitya-balaṁ smṛtam

Synonyms

gaḥ the cows ; vipra brāhmaṇas ; sādhu devotees ; śrutayaḥ and Vedas ; devāḥ the demigods ; dharma the principles of religion ; ādayaḥ beginning with ; pare others ; viṣṇoś of Lord Viṣṇu ; ca also ; tanavaḥ bodies ; hi indeed ; eṣām of them ; nāśe in the destruction ; daitya of the demons ; balam the power ; smṛtam *remembered.

Translation

The cows, brāhmaṇas, devotees, Vedas, demigods, and others headed by the principles of religion, are the limbs of Lord Viṣṇu. When they are destroyed, the power of the demons will be remembered.

jāto yadi mahā-viṣṇus te śatrur yo mahī-tale ayaṁ caitad vadhopāyo gavādīnāṁ vihiṁsanam

Synonyms

jātaḥ born ; yadi if ; mahā-viṣṇuḥ Lord Mahā-Viṣṇu ; te your ; śatruḥ enemy ; yaḥ who ; mahī of the earth ; tale on the surface ; ayam He ; ca also ; etat this ; vadha killing ; upāyaḥ means ; gava cows ; ādīnām beginning with ; vihiṁsanam *violence.

Translation

If your enemy Lord Mahā-Viṣṇu is indeed born on the earth then the way to kill Him is to attack the cows and these others.

śrī-nārada uvāca itthaṁ mahodbhaṭā duṣṭā daiteyāḥ kaṁsa-noditāḥ dudruvuḥ khaṁ gavādibhyo jaghnur jātāṁs ca bālakān

Synonyms

śrī-nāradaḥ uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; ittham thus ; mahā great ; udbhaṭāḥ powerful ; duṣṭāḥ wicked ; daiteyāḥ demons ; kaṁsa by Kaṁsa ; noditāḥ sent ; dudruvuḥ ran ; kham to the sky ; gava by the cows ; ādibhyaḥ headed ; jaghnuḥ killed ; jātān born ; ca also ; bālakān *infants.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Sent by Kaṁsa, these powerful and sinful demons flew in the sky. They killed many newborn infants and many cows and other pious beings.

ā-samudrād bhūmi-tale viśantaś ca gṛhe gṛhe kāma-rūpa-dhara-daityāś ceruḥ sarpa ivābhavan

ā-samudrāt from the ocean ; bhūmi-tale to the land ; viśantaḥ going ; ca also ; gṛhe gṛhe from house to house ; kāma according to their own desire ; rūpa forms ; dhara accepting ; daityāḥ demons ; ceruḥ went ; sarpāḥ serpents ; iva like ; abhavan *became.

Translation

From sea to sea traveling over the earth and entering house after house, these demons, who could assume any form they wished, moved about like so many snakes.

utpathā udbhaṭā daityās tatrāpi kaṁsa-noditāḥ kapiḥ surāpo 'li-hato bhūta-grasta ivābhavan

Synonyms

utpathāḥ left the path ; udbhaṭāḥ great ; daityāḥ demons ; tatra there ; api also ; kaṁsa-noditāḥ sent by Kaṁsa ; kapiḥ a monkey ; surāpaḥ a drunkard ; ali by drink ; hataḥ destroyed ; bhūta by a ghost ; grastaḥ haunted ; iva like ; abhavan *became.

Translation

The great demons sent by Kaṁsa were far from the path (of religion). They were like a monkey, or a drunkard destroyed by drink, or a man possessed by a ghost.

vaideha maithila narendra upendra-bhakta dharmiṣṭha-mukhya sutapo janaka pratāpin etat satāṁ ca bhuvi helanam aṅga rājan sarvaṁ chinatti bahulāśva catuṣpadārthān

Synonyms

vaideha O king of Videha ; maithila O king of Mithilā ; nara of men ; indra O lord ; upendra of Lord Upendra ; bhakta O devotee ; dharmiṣṭha of they who follow the principles of religion ; mukhya O first ; sutapaḥ O austere one ; janaka O father ; pratāpin O powerful one ; etat this ; satām of the devotees ; ca also ; bhuvi on earth ; helanam harassment ; aṅga O pious one ; rājan O king ; sarvam everything ; chinatti broke ; bahulāśva O Bahulāśva ; catuṣpada-arthān *thefour goals of life.

Translation

O king of Videha, O king of Mithilā, O lord of men, O devotee of Lord Upendra, O first of the pious, O austere one, O father, O powerful one, in this way (the demons) harassed the devotees on the earth. O pious king Bahulāśva, (the demons) broke apart the four goals of pious life.
