Chapter Nineteen Rāsa-krīḍā The Rāsa-dance Pastime

Text 1

Verse text

śrī-bahulāśva uvāca rādhāyai darśanaṁ dattvā kṛtvā prema-parīkṣaṇam agre cakāra kaṁ līlāṁ bhagavān ātma-līlayā

Synonyms

Translation

Śrī Bahulāśva said: After He tested Rādhā's love and then revealed Himself to Her, what pastime did the Lord enjoy?

śrī-nārada uvāca mādhavo mādhave māsi mādhavībhiḥ samākule vṛndāvane samārebhe rāsaṁ rāseśvaraḥ svayam

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; mādhavaḥ Kṛṣṇa ; mādhave in teh springtime ; māsi month ; mādhavībhiḥ with madhavi vines ; samākule filled ; vṛndāvane in Vṛndāvana ; samārebhe began ; rāsam the rasa dance ; rāseśvaraḥ the king of the rasa dance ; svayam *Himself.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: In the month of Mādhava (April-May), when Vṛndāvana forest was filled with blossoming mādhavī vines, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the king of the rāsa dance, began the rāsa-dance pastime.

vaiśākha-māsi paṣcamyāṁ jāte candrodaye śubhe yamunopavane reme rāseśvaryā manoharaḥ

Synonyms

vaiśākha-māsi in the month of Madhava ; pa 24camyām on the fifth day ; jāte manifested ; candrodaye the moonrise ; śubhe beautiful ; yamuna by the Yamunā ; upavane in a gardenb ; reme enjoyed ; rāseśvaryā with thequeen of the rasa dance ; manoharaḥ *handsome Kṛṣṇa.

Translation

On the fifth day of the month of Mādhava, as the moon beautifully rose, in a garden by the Yamunā's shore handsome Kṛṣṇa enjoyed with Śrī Rādhā, the queen of the rāsa dance.

purā maithila golokād bhūmir ya kau samāgatā sarvā babhūva sauvarṇa- padmarāgamayī tvaram

Synonyms

purā previously ; maithila O king of Mithilā ; golokāt from Goloka ; bhūmiḥ the land ; ya who ; kau to the earth ; samāgatā come ; sarvā all ; babhūva became ; sauvarṇa gold ; padmarāgamayī made of rubies ; tvaram *at once.

Translation

O king of Mithilā, in an instant the gold and ruby ground of Goloka came to the the earth.

vṛndāvanaṁ divya-vapur dadhāt kāma-dughair drumaiḥ mādhavībhir latābhiś ca prakṣipan nanda-nandanam

Translation

Then Vṛndāvana forest manifested its transcendental form. Filled with mādhavī vines and kalpa-vṛkṣa trees, it eclipsed the Nandana gardens of Indra.

ratna-sopāna-sampannā sphurat-sauvarṇa-tolikā rarāja yamunā rājan haṁsa-padmādi-saṅkulā

Translation

O king, with jewel stairways, glittering golden arches, and many swans and lotuses, the Yamunā shone with great splendor.

ratna-dhātu-mayaḥ śrīmad- ratna-śṛṅga-sphurad-dyutiḥ sa-pakṣi-gaṇa-samyukto latā-puṣpa-manoharaḥ nirjhāraiḥ sundarībhiś ca dārībhir bhramarī-vṛtaḥ reje govardhano nāma giri-rājaḥ karīndra-vat

Translation

It's rocks jewels, its beautiful glittering peaks made of jewels, beautiful with many birds, flowering vines, swiftly-moving streams, beautiful caves, and many bumblebees, the king of mountains, which was named Govardhana, was splendidly manifest as if it were the king of elephants.

sarve nikuṣjāḥ parito rejur divya-vapur-dharāḥ sabhā-maṇḍapa-vīthībhiḥ prāṅgana-stambha-paṅktibhiḥ patat-patākair divyābhair sauvarṇaiḥ kalaśair nṛpa śvetāruṇaiḥ puṣpa-dalaiḥ puṣpa-mandira-vartibhiḥ

Translation

Manifesting their spiritual forms, all the forest groves were splendidly manifest with many assembly-houses, pavilions, pathways, courtyards, rows of pillars, fluttering flags, and flower palaces with splendid golden domes and red and white flower petals.

vasanta-mādhurya-dharāḥ kūjat-kokila-sārasāḥ pārāvatair mayūraiś ca yatra tatra nikūjitāḥ rādhā-kṛṣṇa-kathāṁ puṇyaṁ gāyamānair madhuvrataiḥ patadbhir madhu-mattaiś ca kuṣjāḥ sarve virājitāḥ

Translation

Filled with the sweetness of spring, with cooing cuckoos, cranes, pārāvatas, peacocks, and with honey-intoxicated bees singing the sacred stories of Śrī Śrī Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa, all the forest groves shone with great glory.

puline śītalo vāyur manda-gāmī vahaty alam sahasra-dala-padmānāṁ rajo vīkṣepayan muhuḥ

Synonyms

puline on the riverbank ; śītalaḥ cool ; vāyuḥ breeze ; manda-gāmī gentle ; vahaty blows ; alam greatly ; sahasra-dala-padmānām of the thousand-petal lotuses ; rajaḥ pollen ; vīkṣepayan tossing ; muhuḥ *again and again.

Translation

Carrying the pollen of thousand-petal lotuses, a gentle and cool breeze blew along the riverbank.

kāścid goloka-vāsinyaḥ kāścic chāyyopakārikāḥ śṛṅgāra-prakarāḥ kāścit kāścid vai dvāra-pālikāḥ

Translation

Some of the gopīs were residents of Goloka, some arranged the couches, some made decorations, some guarded the entrances, . . .

pārṣadākhyāḥ sakhī-janās chatra-cāmara-pāṇayaḥ puṣpābharaṇa-kāriṇyaḥ śrī-vṛndāvana-pālikāḥ

Translation

. . . some were Rādhā's associates and friends, some carried parasols, cāmaras, and flower decorations in their hands, some were protectors of Vṛndāvana forest, . . .

govardhana-nivāsinyaḥ kāścit kuṣja-vidhāyikāḥ tan-nikuṣja-nivāsinyo nartakyo vādya-tat-parāḥ

Synonyms

govardhana-nivāsinyaḥ living on Govardhana Hill ; kāścit some ; kuṣja the groves ; vidhāyikāḥ arranging ; tan-nikuṣja-nivāsinyaḥ residing in the forest groves ; nartakyaḥ dancers ; vādya-tat-parāḥ *instrumentalists.

Translation

. . . some lived on Govardhana Hill, some decorated the forest groves, some stayed in the forest groves, some were dancers, and some played musical instruments.

Verse text

sarvā vai candra-vadanāḥ kiśora-vayaso nṛpa āsāṁ dvādaśa-yūthāś cā- jagmuḥ śrī-kṛṣṇa-sannidhim

Synonyms

sarvāḥ all ; vai indeed ; candra-vadanāḥ faces like the moon ; kiśora-vayasaḥ youthful ; nṛpa O king ; āsām of them ; dvādaśa twelve ; yūthāḥ groups ; ca and ; ājagmuḥ came ; śrī-kṛṣṇa-sannidhim *near Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

Translation

O king, they were all young and they all had faces glorious as the moon. In twelve groups they approached Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

tathaiva yamunā sākṣād yūthī-bhūtvā samāyayau nīlāmbarā ratna-bhūṣā śyāmā kamala-locanā

Synonyms

tathā so ; eva indeed ; yamunā the Yamunā ; sākṣāt directly ; yūthī-bhūtvā becoming a gopī ; samāyayau came ; nīlāmbarā in blue garments ; ratna-bhūṣā decorated with jewels ; śyāmā dark ; kamala lotus ; locanā *eyes.

Translation

Then the Yamunā became a dark-complexioned, lotus-eyed, dressed in blue and decorated with jewels leader of a group of gopīs, and came there.

tathaiva jahnavī gaṅgā yūthī-bhūtvā samāyayau śvetāmbarā śveta-varṇā muktābharaṇa-bhūṣitā

Translation

Then the Gaṅgā became a fair-complexioned, dressed in white and decorated with pearls leader of a group of gopīs, and she also came there.

tathāyayau ramā sākṣād yūthī-bhūtvāruṇāmbarā candra-varṇā manda-hāsā padmarāga-vibhūṣitā

tathā so ; āyayau came ; ramā the goddess of fortune ; sākṣāt directly ; yūthī-bhūtvā become a gopī ; aruṇāmbarā wearing red garments ; candra of the moon ; varṇā the color ; manda-hāsā with a gentle smile ; padmarāga-vibhūṣitā *decorated with rubies.

Translation

Then goddess Ramā became a gently smiling, moon-complexioned, dressed in red and decorated with rubies leader of a group of gopīs, and she also came there.

tathāyayau kṛṣṇa-patnī nāmnā yā madhu-mādhavī padma-varṇā puṣpa-bhūṣā yūthī-bhūtā śubhāmbarā

Translation

Then Lord Kṛṣṇa's wife named Madhumādhavī become a lotus-complexioned, dressed in beautiful garments and decorated with flowers leader of a group of gopīs, and she also came there.

tathaiva virajā sākṣād yūthī-bhūtvā samāyayau harid-vastrā gaura-varṇā ratnālaṅkāra-bhūṣitā

Synonyms

tathā so ; eva indeed ; virajā the Virajā ; sākṣāt directly ; yūthī-bhūtvā becoming a gopī ; samāyayau came ; harid-vastrā in green garments ; gaura-varṇā golden complexion ; ratnālaṅkāra-bhūṣitā *decorated with jewels.

Translation

Then the Virajā river became a golden-complexioned, dressed in green and decorated with jewels leader of a group of gopīs, and she also came there.

lalitayā viśākhāyā māyā-yūthāḥ samāyayau evaṁ tv aṣṭa-sakhīnāṁ ca sakhīnāṁ kila ṣoḍaśa

Translation

Then the groups led by Lalitā, Viśākhā, and goddess Lakṣmī came. In this way the eight principal friends of Śrī Rādhā came and sixteen more friends also came.

dvā-triṁśac ca sakhīnāṁ ca yūthā sarve samāyayuḥ rarāja bhagavān rājan strī-gaṇai rāsa-maṇḍale

Translation

Then thirty-two more groups of gopīs came. O king, accompanied by these many women, the Lord was splendidly manifest in the rāsa-dance circle.

vṛndāvane yathākāśe candras tārā-gaṇair yathā pīta-vāsaḥ-parikāro naṭa-veṣo manoharaḥ

Synonyms

vṛndāvane in Vṛndāvana ; yathā as ; ākāśe in the sky ; candraḥ the moon ; tārā-gaṇaiḥ with the stars ; yathā as ; pīta yellow ; vāsaḥ garments ; parikāraḥ wearing ; naṭa-veṣaḥ as a dancer ; manoharaḥ *handsome.

Translation

Then in Vṛndāvana forest Lord Kṛṣṇa became like a handsome dancer dressed in yellow garments. He became like a moon accompanied by many stars in the sky.

vetra-bhṛd vādayan vaṁśīṁ gopīnāṁ prītim āvahan mayūra-pakṣa-bhṛn-maulī sragvī kuṇḍala-maṇḍitaḥ rādhayā śuśubhe rāse yathā ratyā ratīśvaraḥ evaṁ gāyan hariḥ sākṣāt sundarī-gaṇa-samvṛtaḥ

Translation

Holding a stick, wearing a garland, earrings, and a peacock-feather crown, playing the flute, singing, surrounded by the beautiful gopīs, and full of love for them, Lord Kṛṣṇa shone with Rādhā in the rāsa dance, as Kāmadeva shines with Rati.

Verse text

yamunā-pulinaṁ puṇyaṁ āyayau rādhayā yutaḥ gṛhītvā hasta-padmena padmābhaṁ sva-priyā-karam

Synonyms

yamunā-pulinam the Yamunā's shore ; puṇyam sacred ; āyayau came ; rādhayā with Rādhā ; yutaḥ with ; gṛhītvā taking ; hasta hand ; padmena lotus ; padmābham glorious as a lotus ; sva-priyā-karam *His beloved's hand.

Translation

Taking His beloved Rādhā's lotus hand in His lotus hand, Lord Kṛṣṇa went to the Yamunā's sacred shore.

Verse text

niṣasāda hariḥ kṛṣṇa- tīre nīra-manohare punar jalpan su-madhuraṁ paśyan vṛndāvanaṁ priyam

Synonyms

Translation

Looking at His beloved Vṛndāvana forest, and sweetly conversing, Lord Kṛṣṇa sat down by the Yamuna's beautiful waters.

calan hasan rādhikayā kuṣjaṁ kuṣjaṁ cacāra ha kuṣje nilīyamānaṁ taṁ tvaraṁ tyaktvā priyā-karam

Synonyms

calan walking ; hasan laughing ; rādhikayā with Rādhā ; kuṣjam grove ; kuṣjam after grove ; cacāra walked ; ha indeed ; ku 24je in a grove ; nilīyamānam disappearing ; tam Him ; tvaram quickly ; tyaktvā leaving ; priyā-karam *the hand of His beloved.

Translation

Smiling and laughing, He walked with Rādhā from forest grove to forest grove. Suddenly slipping from His beloved's hand, He hid among the trees.

Verse text

vilokya śākhāntaritaṁ rādhā jagrāha mādhavam rādhā dudrāva tad-dhastāj jhaṅkāraṁ kurvatī pade

Synonyms

Translation

Seeing Him hiding among the trees, Rādhā captured Kṛṣṇa. Then Rādhā slipped from His hand and ran away, Her anklets tinkling.

Verse text

nilīyamānā kuṣjeṣu paśyato mādhavasya ca dhāvan harir gato yāvat tāvad rādhā tato gatā

Synonyms

nilīyamānā hiding ; kuṣjeṣu among the trees ; paśyataḥ looking ; mādhavasya Kṛṣṇa ; ca and ; dhāvan running ; hariḥ Kṛṣṇa ; gataḥ went ; yāvat as ; tāvat so ; rādhā transcendental ; tataḥ then ; gatā *went.

Translation

Kṛṣṇa looked as She hid among the trees. Wherever Rādhā ran, Kṛṣṇa ran after Her.

vṛkṣa-pārśve hasta-mātrād itaś cetaś ca dhāvatī tamālo hema-vally eva ghanaś caṣcalayā yathā

Synonyms

Translation

Only a hand away, She ran among the trees. They were like a tamāla tree and a golden vine or a monsoon cloud and a lightning flash.

hema-khanyeva nīlādrī reje rādhikayā hariḥ rādhayā viśva-mohinyā babhau madana-mohanaḥ

Synonyms

hema-khanyā a gold mine ; iva like ; nīla a dark ; adrī mountain ; reje shone ; rādhikayā with Rādhā ; hariḥ Kṛṣṇa ; rādhayā with Rādhā ; viśva the universe ; mohinyā charming ; babhau shone ; madana than Kāmadeva ; mohanaḥ *more charming.

Translation

Like a dark mountain and a gold mine, Lord Kṛṣṇa, who is more enchanting then Kāmadeva, shone with Rādhā, the most enchanting girl in the world.

vṛndāvane rāsa-raṅge ratyeva madano yathā dhṛtvā rūpāni tāvanti yāvanti vraja-yoṣitaḥ

Translation

It was as if Kāmadeva and Rati had taken the forms of Lord Kṛṣṇa and the girls of Vraja in the rāsa-dance arena.

nanarta rāsa-raṅge 'sau raṅga-bhūmyāṁ naṭo yathā gāyantyaś cāpi nṛtyantyaḥ sarvā gopyo manoharāḥ

Translation

Lord Kṛṣṇa danced in the rāsa-dance arena and all the beautiful gopīs also sang and danced.

virejuḥ kṛṣṇacandraiś ca yathā śakraiḥ surāṅganāḥ varaṁ vihāraṁ kṛṣṇāyāṁ cakāra madhusūdanaḥ

Translation

The gopīs shone with many Lord Kṛṣṇacandras as the demigoddesses shine with many Indras. Then Lord Kṛṣṇa enjoyed pastimes in the Yamunā.

Lord Kṛṣṇa enjoyed pastimes with the gopīs as the Yakṣa king enjoys with many yakṣīs. Splendid with many wonderfully colorful and beautiful flowers fallen from the gopīs' braids, Lord Kṛṣṇa seemed to be marked with many verses written in the meter uṣṇik.

Translation

Sundarī gave a crest-jewel, Praharṣiṇī gave a braid-jewel, and Goddess Vṛndā, the queen of Vṛndāvana, gave candra and sūrya ornaments glittering like ten million lightning flashes. Accompanied by brilliantly decorated Rādhā on the king of mountains, Lord Kṛṣṇa shone with great glory. The place on Govardhana Hill where Rādhā was decorated is known as śṛṅgāra-maṇḍala. Then, accompanied by His beloved gopīs, Lord Kṛṣṇa went to the lake Candra-sarovara.

Translation

In the water there the Lord enjoyed pastimes with the gopīs as the king of elephants enjoys with many female elephants. Then Candra came and offered two sahasra-dala (thousand-petal) lotuses and two beautiful candrakānta jewels to Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. After gazing at the beauty of Vṛndāvana forest, Kṛṣṇa went to Bāhulavana forest, which was filled with a network of flowering vines. Noticing that all the gopīs were perspiring, He played the megha-mallāra rāga (cloud melody) on His flute, and at once many clouds rained fine drops of water. Then a fragrant cool breeze blew, and all the gopīs became happy, O king of Videha.

Translation

In this way Lord Kṛṣṇa' belt was decorated with campaka flowers, and His armlets with svarṇa-yūthī flowers. He wore a garland of mohinī, mālinī, kunda, and ketakī flowers. His ears were made splendid with the whorls of thousand-petal lotuses.

Translation

O king, then He was decorated with a garland of tulasī-maṣjarīs and forest flowers. In this way Lord Kṛṣṇa was decorated. Accompanied by His beloved, He was happy and splendid as if He were the Deity of springtime personified. Then, with mṛdaṅgas, vīṇās, flutes, murus, yaṣṭis, and karatālas, the gopīs played melodies in three scales of seven notes in the rāgas bhairava, megha-mallāra, dīpaka, mālakośaka, śrī-rāga, and hindola.

With many different dances, with amorous gestures, and with sidelong glances the gopīs pleased Kṛṣṇa. Then, accompanied by the gopīs as He sang Śrī Rādhā's glories, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the king of the rāsa dance, went to Madhuvana forest, where He enjoyed a rāsa dance with Śrī Rādhā, the queen of the rāsa dance.

Translation

O king, walking in the gopīs' company in beautiful Kundavana forest, past many beautiful groves of mālatī, mango, orange, lime, pomegranate, grape, badāmāna, kadamba, śrīphala, kuṭaja, banyan, panasa, pippala, tulasī, kovidāra, ketakī, kadalī, karilla, bakula, and mandāra, Lord Kṛṣṇa came to Kāmavana forest.

Translation

That hill in Kāmavana became decorated with Lord Kṛṣṇa's footprints. Simply by seeing that hill one attains the goal of life.

Not seeing Kṛṣṇa anywhere, they became filled with sorrow. They became like female elephants that cannot find their mate or kurarī birds that cannot find their husband. Separated from Kṛṣṇa, all the girls of Vraja wept.

Translation

The girls called out, "O Śrī Kṛṣṇa! O Kṛṣṇa!" their hearts paasionately attached to Śrī Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet. Then they pretended to have become Kṛṣṇa. This is not surprising. They were like bumblebees attracted to Śrī Kṛṣṇa's glory.

śrī-pādukādhaḥ-sthala-gopī-gopyaḥ śrī-pādukābjaṁ śaraṇaṁ prāpannāḥ

Turning Her back to Kṛṣṇa, Rādhā stood silent. Then Kṛṣṇa, who is dear to the saintly devotees, spoke to His proud beloved Rādhā.

We worship Lord Kṛṣṇa, whose arms are two kings of serpents, who enjoys many pastimes, who came to the earth to show His glories to all the worlds, and who with the dust of His feet decorated Vṛndāvana forest, Govardhana Hill, and all the gopīs.

candraṁ pratapta-kiraṇa-jvalanaṁ prasannaṁ sarvaṁ vanāntam asi-patra-vana-praveśam bāṇaṁ prabhaṣjanam atīva su-manda-yānaṁ manyāmahe kila bhavantam ṛte vyathārtāḥ

saudāsa-rāja-mahiṣī-virahād atīva jātaṁ sahasra-guṇitaṁ nala-paṭṭa-rājṣāḥ tasmāt tu koṭi-guṇitaṁ janakātma-jāyās tasmād anantam ati-duḥkham alaṁ hare naḥ

O Kṛṣṇa, our sorrow is a thousand times greater than King Saudāsa's queen felt away from her husband, ten million times greater than Nala's queen felt, and more without limit than King Janaka's daughter felt.

Śrī Uddhava is the crest jewel of all the devotees. He is qualified to approach Your lotus feet. It is because of Him that we take shelter of Your feet. O glorious one, please be kind to us! Please give us shelter!

Playing the flute in their midst, Lord Kṛṣṇa danced with Rādhā as Kāmadeva dances with Rati.

Saintly devotees who have generous hearts, who see everyone equally, who control their senses, and who are aloof from material things, find in their renunciation a great happiness that I give to them. They find it just as the senses find happiness in the sensations that being with taste.

vīṇā-tāla-mṛdaṅgādi- muru-yaṣṭi-yutāni ca vaditrāṇy ambare neduḥ surair gopī-gaṇaiḥ saha

Some sang in the rāga megha-mallāra, and others in dīpaka, mālakośa, bhairava, śrī-rāga, and many melodies of seven notes. O king, some had the sweet charm of submissive youth, and some had the charm of being a little more independent.

Translation

Some were agressive and independent, some were passionately in love, their hearts attached to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, and some worshiped Kṛṣṇa as their paramour.

Translation

Hidden by the flowering vines, Kṛṣṇa decorated some gopīs, gently touching their hair, nose-pearl, and breasts. He gave very fragrant half-chewed betelnuts to some gopīs and they chewed them. This happened because they had performed many pious activities in the past. Among the kadamba trees some gopīs smiled and with two fingers stroked Kṛṣṇa's dark cheeks.

O king of Mithilā, some gopīs dressed as Lord Kṛṣṇa, with crown and earrings, and danced before Lord Kṛṣṇa, and some, glorious as a hundred moons, dressed as Rādhā, and by singing songs gave pleasure to Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa.

Translation

There was a very austere saint named Asuri Muni, who was a king of sages and a great devotee of Śrī Kṛṣṇa. He performed austerities on Nārada Mountain and in his meditation he always saw handsome Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa standing in a circle of light on the lotus of his heart. Then, one night, Kṛṣṇa was suddenly no longer present in his meditation.

vāraṁ vāraṁ kṛtaṁ dhyānaṁ khinno jāto mahā-muniḥ dhyānād utthāya sa muniḥ kṛṣṇa-darśana-lālasaḥ

nārāyaṇāśramaṁ prāgād badarī-khaṇḍa-maṇḍitam na dadarśa hariṁ devaṁ nara-nārāyaṇaṁ muniḥ

. . . and I went even to Vaikuṇṭha and Goloka looking for Him, but I could not find the Supreme Lord anywhere. Where is the Lord now? O best of all-knowing philosophers, please tell.

Translation

The Supreme Personality of Godhead, whom the materialistic philosophers cannot enjoy as the working senses cannot enjoy the objects of the knowledge-acquiring senses, and who, being beyond the modes of material nature, cannot be seen by the people in genaral, went to save Haṁsa Muni from great troubles in the great ocean. Now Lord Kṛṣṇa has become the king of the rāsa dance. Now He is enjoying a rāsa dance with many gopīs in Vṛndāvana forest.

Many very powerful, stick-wielding women of Goloka guarded the entrance. Blocking the path, they and forbade them to enter.

. . . bowing down to the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa, who in that forest grove was splendid as as ten million moons, who was decorated by lotuslike, swan-graceful Śrī Rādhā's company, who, surrounded by jewellike women, eternally stayed the middle of the rāsa-dance circle, who was handsome as ten million Kāmadevas, whose form was dark and handsome, who was dressed in yellow garments, who held a flute and stick in His hand, who bore the mark of Śrīvatsa, who was decorated with the Kaustubha gem, who was splendid with a forest garland, who was decorated with tinkling anklets, belt, and armlets, and with necklaces, bracelets, and earrings splendid as two rising suns, who wore a crown splendid as ten million suns, who with generous sidelong glances stole the gopīs' hearts, and whom the gopīs gazed at from afar, Lord Śiva and Asuri Muni, now overcome with happiness, spoke.

śrī-bhagavān uvāca the Supreme Personality of Godhead said ; śaṣṭi-varṣa-sahasrāṇi sixty-thousand years ; yuvayoḥ of you both ; tapatoḥ austerities ; tapaḥ austerities ; mad-darśanam to see Me ; tena by that ; jātam produced ; sarvataḥ everywhere ; nairapekṣayoḥ *renounced.

Translation

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Renouncing everything, the two of you performed austerities for sixty-thousand years in order to see Me.

Verse text

niṣkiṣcano yo śāntaś cā- jāta-śatruḥ sa mat-sakhā tasmād yuvābhyāṁ manasā vriyatām īpsito varaḥ

Synonyms

niṣkiṣcanaḥ with no material wealth ; yaḥ one who ; śāntaḥ peaceful ; ca and ; ajāta not born ; śatruḥ enemies ; sa he ; mat-sakhā My friend ; tasmāt from that ; yuvābhyām of you both ; manasā with the heart ; vriyatām may be chosen ; īpsitaḥ desired ; varaḥ *benediction.

Translation

You do not crave material wealth, you are peaceful, you do not think anyone your enemy, and you are my friends. Therefore, please choose a benediction. Choose whatever your hearts desire.

śivāsurī ūcatuḥ namo 'stu bhūman yuvayoḥ padābje sadaiva vṛndāvana-madhya-vāsa na rocate no 'nyam atas tvad-aṅghrer namo yuvābhyāṁ hari-rādhikābhyām

śivāsurī ūcatuḥ Lord Sivaand Asuri Muni said ; namaḥ obeisances ; astu are ; bhūman O Lord ; yuvayoḥ of You ; padābje at the lotus feet ; sadā eternally ; eva indeed ; vṛndāvana-madhya-vāsa- O Lord who resides in Vṛndāvana ; na not ; rocate pleases ; naḥ not ; anyam another ; ataḥ therefore ; tvad-aṅghreḥ of Your feet ; namaḥ obeisances ; yuvābhyām to You both ; hari-rādhikābhyām *Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa.

Translation

Lord Śiva and Asuri Muni said: O Lord who resides in Vṛndāvana, we eternally offer our obeisances to Your lotus feet. Nothing other than Your lotus feet gives us any happiness. O Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, we offer our respectful obeisances to You!

śrī-nārada uvāca tathāstu coktvā bhagavān vṛndāraṇye manohare kālindī-nikaṭe rājan rāsa-maṇḍala-maṇḍite nikuṣja-pārśve puline vaṁśīvaṭa-samīpataḥ śivo 'pi cāsuri-munir nityaṁ vāsaṁ cakāra ha

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said ; tathāstu so be it ; ca and ; uktvā saying ; bhagavān the Lord ; vṛndāraṇye in Vṛndāvana ; manohare beautiful ; kālindī-nikaṭe near the Yamunā ; rājan O king ; rāsa-maṇḍala-maṇḍite decorated by the circle of the rasa dance ; nikuṣja-pārśve in the side of the forest ; puline on the shore ; vaṁśīvaṭa-samīpataḥ near Vamsivata ; śivaḥ Lord Śiva ; api and ; ca and ; āsuri-muniḥ Asuri Muni ; nityam eternally ; vāsam residence ; cakāra did ; ha *indeed.

Translation

The Lord then said, "So be it." From that moment Lord Śiva and Asuri Muni made their residence there, at Vaṁśīvaṭa, where the forest grove by the Yamunā's shore is decorated with the circle of the rāsa dance.

atha kṛṣṇo rāsa-līlāṁ cakre padmākare vane patat-sugandhi-rajasi gopībhir bhramarākule

atha then ; kṛṣṇaḥ Lord Kṛṣṇa ; rāsa-līlām rasa dance pastime ; cakre did ; padmākare in Padmākara ; vane forest ; patat-sugandhi-rajasi filled with fragrant pollen ; gopībhiḥ with the gopīs ; bhramara-ākule *filled with bees.

Translation

Then Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa enjoyed a rāsa dance with the gopīs in Padmākara forest, which was filled with buzzing bees and fragrant flower pollen.

Verse text

evaṁ ṣaṇ-māsikī ratriḥ kṛtā kṛṣṇena maithila gopīnāṁ rāsa-līlāyāṁ vyatītā kṣaṇavat sukhaiḥ

Synonyms

evam thus ; ṣaṇ-māsikī six months ; ratriḥ night ; kṛtā done ; kṛṣṇena with Kṛṣṇa ; maithila O kin gof Mithilā ; gopīnām of the gopīs ; rāsa-līlāyām in the rasa pastime ; vyatītā passed ; kṣaṇavat like a moment ; sukhaiḥ *happily.

Translation

O king of Mithilā, although in truth it lasted for six months, the night Lord Kṛṣṇa enjoyed the rāsa dance with the gopīs seemed to Them only a single moment of great happiness when it was over.

aruṇodaya-velāyāṁ sva-gṛhān vraja-yoṣitaḥ yūthī-bhūtvā yayū rājan sarvāḥ pūrṇa-manorathāḥ

aruṇodaya-velāyām at sunrise ; sva-gṛhān to their own homes ; vraja-yoṣitaḥ the girls of Vraja ; yūthī-bhūtvā becoming groups ; yayuḥ went ; rājan O king ; sarvāḥ all ; pūrṇa fulfilled ; manorathāḥ *desires.

Translation

At sunrise all the gopīs, their desires fulfilled, returned to their homes.

śrī-nanda-mandiraṁ sākṣāt prāyayau nanda-nandanaḥ vṛṣabhānu-puraṁ prāgād vṛṣabhānu-sutā tvaram

Translation

Lord Kṛṣṇa went to Nanda's palace and Śrī Rādhā hurried to King Vṛṣabhānu's palace.

evaṁ śrī-kṛṣṇacandrasya rāsākhyānaṁ manoharam sarva-pāpa-haraṁ puṇyaṁ kāma-daṁ maṅgalāyanam trivargya-daṁ janānāṁ tu mumukṣūṇāṁ su-mukti-dam mayā tavāgre kathitaṁ kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi

Translation

Thus I have described to You Śrī Kṛṣṇacandra's beautiful and sacred rāsa dance, which removes all sins, fulfills all desires, brings auspiciousness, gives to the people the three goals of life, and gives to they who yearn for liberation the highest kind of liberation. What more do you wish to hear?
