Verse text

śrī-nārada uvāca adṛṣṭvā vatsakān etya vatsapān puline hariḥ ubhau vicinvān vipine mene karma vidheḥ kṛtam

Synonyms

śrī-nārada uvāca Śrī Nārada said: ; adṛṣṭvā not seeing ; vatsakān the calves ; etya going ; vatsapān to the gopas ; puline on the shore ; hariḥ Kṛṣṇa ; ubhau both ; vicinvān searching ; vipine in the forest ; mene thought ; karma the work ; vidheḥ of Brahmā ; kṛtam done.

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: Not seeing the calves, returning to the riverbank and not seeing the gopas, and then searching in the forest for them both, Kṛṣṇa thought, "This must be Brahmā's work."

tato gavāṁ gopīkānāṁ mudaṁ kartuṁ sa līlayā sarvaṁ tu viśva-kṛc cakre hy ātmānam ubhayāyitam

Synonyms

Translation

Then, to please the cows and gopīs, Lord Kṛṣṇa, who is the creator of the universes, made Himself into (the calves and boys).

yāvat vatsapa-vatsānāṁ vapuḥ pāṇi-padādikān yāvad yaṣṭi-visanādīn yāvac chīla-guṇādikān

Translation

yāvad bhūṣana-vastrādīn tāvac chrī-hariṇā svataḥ sarvaṁ viṣṇumayaṁ viśvaṁ iti vākyaṁ pradarśitam yāvat—as; vatsapa—gopas; vatsānām—and calves; vapuḥ—forms; pāṇi-padādikān—beginning weith feet and hands; yāvat—as; yaṣṭi—sticks; visana—horns; ādīn—beginning with; yāvac—as; śīla—character; guṇa—and qualities; ādikān—beginning with; yāvat—as; bhūṣana-vastrādīn—beginning with graments and ornaments; tāvac—so; chrī-hariṇā—by Lord Kṛṣṇa; svataḥ—pwrsonally; sarvam—all; viṣṇumayam—consisting of Lord Viṣṇu; viśvam—the universe; iti—thus; vākyam—the statement; pradarśitam—demonstrated. Whatever were the gopas' and calves' forms, with their hands, feet, and other parts, whatever were their sticks, horns, and other possessions, whatever were their characters, qualities, and other features, and whatever were their clothes, ornaments, and other things, Lord Kṛṣṇa perfectly copied. In this way He proved the Vedic statement: "sarvaṁ viṣṇumayaṁ viśvam" (The entire universe is Lord Viṣṇu).

ātma-vatsān ātma-gopaiś cārayan krīḍayā hariḥ praviśan nanda-nagaraṁ aṣṭam-giri-gate ravau

Synonyms

Translation

As the sun was setting on the western horizon, Kṛṣṇa, herding calves that were in truth Himself, and accompanied by gopas that were also Himself, playfully entered Nanda's village.

tat-tad-goṣṭhe pṛthaṅ nītvā tat-tad-vatsān praveśya ca kṛṣṇo 'bhavat tat-tad-ātmā tat-tad-gehaṁ praviṣṭavān

Synonyms

Translation

The many gopas, who were all Kṛṣṇa, led the various calves, who were also Kṛṣṇa, to their respective barns. Then the gopas entered their own homes.

śrutvā vaṁśī-ravaṁ gopyaḥ sambhramac chīghram utthitaḥ payāṁsi pāyayām āsur lālayitvā sutān pṛthak

Synonyms

śrutvā hearing ; vaṁśī of the flute ; ravam the sound ; gopyaḥ the gopīs ; sambhramat fainted ; śīghram at once3 ; utthitaḥ stood up ; payāṁsi milk ; pāyayām āsuḥ made flow ; lālayitvā embracing ; sutān sons ; pṛthak individually.

Translation

Hearing the sound of the flute, the gopīs fainted and then suddenly stood up. As milk flowed from them, each embraced her son.

svān svān vātṁsāṁs tathā gāvo rambhamānān nirīkṣya ca lihantyo jihvayāṅgāni payāṁsi ca hy apāyayan

Synonyms

Translation

Seeing their calves, the cows mooed. They licked the calves with their tongues, and made the calves drink their milk.

abhavan mātaraḥ sarvā gopyo gāvo harer aho ati-snehaṁ ca vavṛdhe pūrvato hi catur-guṇam

Synonyms

Translation

In this way all the gopīs and cows became Kṛṣṇa's mothers. Their love for their children became four times what it had been.

sva-putrān lālayitvā tu majjanonmardanādibhiḥ paścād gopyaś ca kṛṣṇasya darśanaṁ kartum āyayuḥ

Synonyms

Translation

As they embraced, bathed, massaged, and in other ways served their sons, the gopīs now gazed on Lord Kṛṣṇa.

anekānāṁ tu bālānāṁ udvāhāḥ kṛṣṇa-rūpiṇam babhūvus tāḥ vraje vadhvo ratāḥ kṛṣṇe tu koṭiśaḥ

Translation

Then the millions of gopī girls, who were all deeply in love with Kṛṣṇa, were married to the many gopa boys, who at that time were all forms of Kṛṣṇa.

vatsa-pāla-miṣenāpi svātmānaṁ hy ātmanā hareḥ pālito vatsaraś caiko babhūva vraja-maṇḍale

Synonyms

Translation

In the circle of Vraja one year passed with Kṛṣṇa disguising Himself as both the calves and gopas. He was the calves and He was the gopas protecting the calves.

sa-rāmaś caikadhā vatsāṁś cāraṇyaṁ cārayan yayau hāyanāpūraṇīṣv atra paṣcaṣāsu ca ratriṣu

Synonyms

Translation

On the day when there were only five nights remaining to complete the year, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma went to the forest as They herded the calves.

tatrāpi dūrāc carataś ca gāvo vatsān upavrajya gireś ca śṛṅgāt lihanti cāṅgāni vilokayantyo hy apāyayaṁs ta āmṛtāni sadyaḥ

Synonyms

Translation

From far away on the summit of Govardhana Hill the cows ran to their calves, licked their bodies, gazed on them, and made them drink the nectar of their milk.

govardhanād adho vatsān pīta-dugdhān vilokya ca snehāvṛtaḥ sthitā gāś ca gopāla dādṛśur nṛpa

Translation

O king, the cowherd men saw the calves, who had already drunk their (mothers') milk, staying below Govardhana Hill, and they saw the cows, overcome with love for their calves, also staying there.

tataḥ krodhena mahatā parvatād avatīrya ca tādanārthe sva-putrāṇāṁ ājagmuḥ kacchato drutam

Synonyms

tataḥ then ; krodhena with anger ; mahatā great ; parvatāt from the hill ; avatīrya descending ; ca and ; tādana-arthe to punish ; sva-putrāṇām own sons ; ājagmuḥ came ; kacchataḥ vicinity ; drutam quickly.

Translation

As the men came down from the hill to hit the cows, they suddenly came upon their own sons.

tadāgatā samipe tu putrāṇāṁ gopa-nāyakāḥ svān svān sutāṁs tadonnīyā hy aṅke kṛtvā milanti vai

Synonyms

Translation

Meeting them, the gopa men immediately placed their sons on their laps.

yathā yuvāno vṛddhāś cā snehād aśru-pariplutāḥ svān svān pautrān gṛhītvā tu hy upaviṣṭā milanti hi

Synonyms

Translation

Young and old were flooded with tears of love. The men embraced their sons and grandsons and sat down with them.

evaṁ prema-parān sarvān dṛṣṭvā saṅkarṣaṇo balaḥ bahu-prakāraṁ sandehaṁ kṛtvā manasi so 'bravīt

Synonyms

Translation

Seeing everyone so affectionate, powerful Balarāma had many doubts. In His mind he said:

aho kiṁ vatsarāt prāpto na jṣāto 'pi vraje mayā ati-snehas tu sarveṣāṁ vardhate ca dine dine

Synonyms

ahaḥ -Oh ; kim what? ; vatsarāt from a year ; prāptaḥ attained ; na not ; jṣātaḥ understood ; api even ; vraje in Vraja ; mayā by Me ; ati-snehaḥ very affectionate ; tu indeed ; sarveṣām of all ; vardhate increases ; ca also ; dine dine day after day.

Translation

I do not understand what has happened for the past year. Everyone is so affectionate, and their love increases day after day.

Verse text

keyaṁ māyā samāyātā deva-gandharva-rakṣasām nānyā me mohinī māyā vinā kṛṣṇasya sāmpratam

Synonyms

what? ; iyam this ; māyā illusion ; samāyātā come ; deva-gandharva-rakṣasām of the devas, gandharvas, and raksasas ; na not ; anyā another ; me Me ; mohinī bewildering ; mayā illusion ; vinā without ; kṛṣṇasya Kṛṣṇa ; sampratam now.

Translation

Is this an illusion made by the devas, gandharvas, or rākṣasas? No one but Kṛṣṇa can bewilder Me.

evaṁ vicārya rāmas tu locane sve nyamilayat bhūtaṁ bhāvyaṁ bhaviṣyaṁ ca divyākṣābhyāṁ dadarśa ha

Synonyms

Translation

Thinking this, Balarāma closed His eyes. Then with transcendental eyes He looked at the past, present, and future.

sarvān vatsāṁs tathā gopān vaṁśī-vetra-vibhūṣitān barhi-pakṣa-dharān śyāmān bhṛgv-aṅghri-kṛta-kautukān

Synonyms

Translation

He saw that all the calves and gopas had become dark boys, each decorated with a flute and stick, peacock feathers, Bhṛgu Muni's footprint, . . .

jālakānāṁ maṇīnāṁ ca guṣjānāṁ sragbhir eva ca padmānāṁ kumudānāṁ ca hy eṣāṁ srāgbhir vibhūṣitān

uṣṇīśair mukuṭair divyaiḥ kuṇḍalair alakair vṛtān ānanda-varṣān kurvanān śarat-padma-dṛśair api

Synonyms

Translation

. . . turbans, crowns, and splendid earrings, endowed with curly locks of hair, making showers of bliss with the glances of their autumn-lotus eyes, . . .

koṭi-kandarpa-lāvaṇyān nāsa-mautika-śobhitān sikha-bhūṣaṇa-samyuktān pāṇi-bhūṣana-bhūṣitān

Synonyms

koṭi millions ; kandarpa of Kāmadevas ; lāvaṇyān handsome ; nāsa nose ; mautika pearl ; śobhitān —decorated ; śikhā-bhūṣaṇa-samyuktān with ornaments on top of the head ; pāṇi-bhūṣana-bhūṣitān decorated with ornaments on Their hands.

Translation

. . . more handsome than millions of Kāmadevas, their noses decorated with pearls and their heads and hands decorated with many ornaments, . . .

Verse text

dvi-bhujān pīta-vastraiś ca kāṣcī-kaṭaka-nūpuraiḥ prabhātara-vikoṭīnāṁ śobhābhiḥ śobhitān śubhān

Synonyms

dvi-bhujān two arms ; pīta-vastraiḥ with yellow garments ; ca and ; kāṣcī with belts ; kaṭaka with bracelets ; nūpuraiḥ with anklets ; prabhātara-vikoṭīnām splendid as millions of rising suns ; śobhabhiḥ with splendor ; śobhitān glorious ; subhān glorious.

Translation

. . . having two arms, glorious with yellow garments, belts, bracelets, and anklets, and more glorious than millions of rising suns.

Verse text

uttare giri-rājasya yamunāyāś ca dakṣiṇe acaṣṭa vṛndakāraṇye sarvān kṛṣṇaṁ halāyudhaḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Balarāma saw that all these forms on top of Govardhana Hill, and in Vṛndāvana forest south of the Yamunā were all Kṛṣṇa.

jṣātvā kṛṣṇa-kṛtaṁ karma tathā vidhi-kṛtaṁ balaḥ punar vatsān vatsapāṁś ca paśyan kṛṣṇam uvāca ha

Translation

Understanding what Brahmā had done and what Kṛṣṇa had done, and looking again at the calves and gopas, Balarāma said to Kṛṣṇa:

brahmānanto dharma indraḥ śivaś ca sevante taṁ bhakti-yuktaḥ sadaite svātmarāmaḥ pūrṇa-kāmaḥ pareśaḥ sraṣṭuṁ śaktaḥ koṭiśo 'ṇḍāni yaḥ khe

Synonyms

Translation

The devotees Brahmā, Ananta, Yama, Indra, and Śiva always worship the Supreme Lord, who is the controller of everything, who is self-satisfied, whose desires are always fulfilled, and who has the power to create many millions of universes in the sky.

śrī-nārada uvāca evaṁ bruvati śrī-rame tavat tatrāgato vidhiḥ dadarśa kṛṣṇaṁ rāmaṁ ca vatsakair vatsapaiḥ samam

Translation

Śrī Nārada said: As Balarāma was speaking, Brahmā came there and saw Kṛṣṇa, Balarāma, the calves, and the gopas.

aho kṛṣṇena cānītā yatra sarve dhṛtā mayā iti bruvan yayau sthāne tatra sarvān dadarśa saḥ

Translation

Saying, "Kṛṣṇa brought back all the (calves and gopas) I took away," Brahmā left and saw them all still there (where he had hid them).

dṛṣṭvā prasuptān sarvāṁs tu sa āgatya vraje punaḥ vatsapālair hariṁ vīkṣya manasi prāha vismitaḥ

Seeing them all still asleep, he returned to Vraja and gazed again at Kṛṣṇa and the gopas. Astonished, in his mind he said:

aho vicitraṁ te sarve kutra sthānāt samāgataḥ krīḍanto pūrvavac cātra sākaṁ kṛṣṇena krīḍanaiḥ

Translation

This is a great wonder. From where did all these boys come that now they are playing with Kṛṣṇa just as before?

mat-truṭir vatsaraś caiko vyatito 'bhūn mahī-tale sarve prasannatāṁ prāptā na jṣātaḥ kenacit kvacit

Translation

What is for me only a moment is a year on earth. I don't understand how they are still manifested as before.

evaṁ sammohayan brahmā mohanaṁ viśva-mohanam sva-māyayāndha-kāreṇa sva-gātraṁ naiva dṛṣṭavān

Synonyms

Translation

In this way Brahmā, who bewilders the entire universe, was so blinded by Kṛṣṇa's illusion that he could not see even his own body.

vatsapālāpaharaṇāt kim abhūj jagataḥ pateḥ aho khadyota-vad vedhā śrī-kṛṣṇa-ravi-sammukhe

Translation

What happened to Brahmā, the master of the universe, after he stole the gopas? The creator Brahmā became like a firefly standing before the sun of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

evaṁ vimuhyati sati jaḍī-bhūte ca brahmaṇi sva-māyāṁ kṛpayākṛṣya kṛṣṇaḥ svaṁ darśanaṁ dadau

Translation

As Brahmā stood, stunned and bewildered, Kṛṣṇa mercifully removed His own illusory potency and revealed Himself.

evaṁ tatra sakṛd brahmā go-vatsān gopa-dārakān sarvān ācaṣṭa śrī-kṛṣṇaṁ bhaktyā vijṣāna-locanaiḥ

Translation

With eyes of knowledge Brahmā devotedly gazed at the calves and gopa boys and saw that they were all Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

dadarśātha vidhis tatra bahir antaḥ śarīrataḥ svātmanā sahitaṁ rājan sarvaṁ viṣṇumayaṁ jagat

Translation

O king, Brahmā then saw that the entire universe, including all that was inside and outside his body, and including his own self, was all the potency of Lord Viṣṇu.

evaṁ vilokya brahmā tu jado bhūtvā sthiro 'bhavat vṛndāvad vṛndakāraṇye prādṛśyeta yathā tathā

Translation

Gazing at this, Brahmā became stunned. He looked like an unmoving tulasī plant in Vṛndāvana forest.

svātmano mahimaṁ draṣṭuṁ hy anīse 'pi ca brahmaṇi cacchāda sapadi jṣātvā māyā-javanikāṁ hariḥ

Translation

Aware that Brahmā had no power to continue gazing at the Lord's glories, Kṛṣṇa at once pulled the curtain of His illusory potency.

tataḥ pralabdha-nayanaḥ sraṣṭa supta ivotthitaḥ unmīlya nayane kṛcchrad

Translation

dadarśedaṁ sahātmanā tataḥ—from that; pralabdha—bewildered; nayanaḥ—eyes; sraṣṭa—the creator; supta—asleep; iva—as if; utthitaḥ—rose; unmīlya—opening; nayane—his eyes; kṛcchrat—with difficulty; dadarśa—saw; idam—this; saha—with; ātmanā—himself. Then, his eyes covered, the creator Brahmā became as if asleep. Awakening, and with difficulty opening his eyes, he saw Vṛndāvana and he also saw himself.

samāhitas tatra bhūtvā sadyo 'paśyad diśo daśa śrīmad-vṛndāvanaṁ ramyaṁ vasantī-latikānvitam

śardūla-bālakair yatra krīḍanti mṛga-bālakaḥ śyenaiḥ kapotā nakulaiḥ sarpā vaira-vivarjitāḥ

Translation

. . . where without any enmity fawns play with tiger cubs, doves play with eagles, and snakes play with mongeese.

tataś ca vṛndakāraṇye sa-pāṇi-kavalaṁ vidhiḥ vatsān sakhīn vicinvantaṁ ekaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ dadarśa saḥ

Translation

Then Brahmā saw Kṛṣṇa, with a morsel of food in His hand, searching for His calves and friends in Vṛndāvana forest.

dṛṣṭvā gopāla-veṣeṇa guptaṁ goloka-vallabham jṣātvā sākṣād dhariṁ brahmā bhīto 'bhūt sva-kṛtena ca

Translation

Gazing at Him, and suddenly understanding that Kṛṣṇa was Lord Hari, the beloved of Goloka, the Supreme Personality of Godhead now disguised as an ordinary gopa, Brahmā became afraid for what he had done.

taṁ prasādayituṁ rājan jvalantaṁ sarvato diśam lajjayāvāṇ-mukho bhūtvā hy avatīrya sva-vāhanāt

Translation

O king, to beg for pardon from the Lord, whose glory filled all directions, Brahmā, speechless with embarrassment, descended from his swan-carrier.

śanair upasasāreśaṁ prasīdeti vadan naman sravad-varṣāśru-dattārghaḥ sa papātāthā daṇḍavat

Translation

Slowly he approached the Lord. Saying, "Please be kind", bowing down, and with a streams of tears offering arghya, he fell down like a stick.

utthāyāśvasya taṁ kṛṣṇaḥ priyaṁ priya iva spṛśan surān su-bhūvi dūra-sthān āluloka sudhārdra-dṛk

Translation

Pulling Brahmā up, comforting him, and gently touching him as a lover touches his beloved, Lord Kṛṣṇa, His eyes wet with nectar, glanced at the many demigods now standing far away.

tato jaya-jayety-uccaiḥ stuvatāṁ namatāṁ samam tad-dayādṛṣṭa-dṛṣṭānāṁ sānandaḥ sambhramo 'bhavat

Synonyms

Translation

When the demigods received Lord Kṛṣṇa's merciful glance they called out, "Glory! Glory!", bowed down, and offered prayers. Pleased with them, Kṛṣṇa offered them all respect.

dṛṣṭvā hariṁ tatra samasthitaṁ vidhir nanāma taṁ bhakti-manaḥ kṛtāṣjaliḥ stutiṁ cakārāśu sa daṇḍaval luṭhan prahṛṣṭa-roma bhuvi gadgadākṣaraḥ

Synonyms

Translation

Gaizing at Lord Kṛṣṇa standing there, and his heart filled with devotion, with folded hands Brahmā bowed down. Falling like a stick to the ground, the hairs of his body erect in ecstasy, and his voice choked with emotion, Brahmā offered prayers.
